ABS-CBN’S IPOST DEPLOYS LARGE FACILIS TECHNOLOGY SSD HYBRID SHARED STORAGE SYSTEM
PHILIPPINES-BASED INTEGRATED POST PRODUCTION FACILITY PUTS 288TB SHARED STORAGE SYSTEM AT HEART OF NEW MEDIA ASSET
MANAGEMENT ARCHITECTURE SUPPORTING NATIONAL COMMERCIAL BROADCAST TELEVISION & RADIO NETWORK
iPost operates under the Technical Operations Division of the Philippines’ national commercial broadcast television and radio network,
ABS-CBN. It provides audio and video post production and visual effects services with an extensive range of content from drama
series to soaps, talk shows and game shows. ABS-CBN operates two national TV channels, two regional radio networks, 11 cable
channels and six international channels.
Prior to this install, iPost had four editing workgroups where each workgroup comprises 20-25 editing bays. To significantly increase
the broadcasters’ editing capacity, it has added two more workgroups where up to 30 Avid Media Composer systems will work in
a shared collaborative workflow. Facilis TerraBlock provides the shared storage facilities which bind this large-scale open workflow
together.
The TerraBlock shared storage system is integrated alongside iPost’s content ingest facility to capture video feeds from other
channels within the network and also from external sources. Eventually, the TerraBlock systems will be part of a larger central ingest
system aimed to manage materials from acquisition to post production and delivery to in-house clients.
Specified by Media Village’s expert team of workflow designers, the TerraBlock system utilizes a combination of SSD and spinning
hard drives to provide optimum levels of operational efficiency, resilience and cost efficiency. The system provides 10GigE and
16Gbps fiber channel client connectivity.
“We evaluated several other shared storage systems prior to making our decision and the Facilis TerraBlock out-performed all
of its rivals,” commented Jessie Yamzon, the Head of Post Production at iPost. “Price and performance combined with its ease of
maintenance were major factors that also led to the decision.”
For Facilis, this contract marks a turning point in the company’s 13 year history. “Our ability to extend our technology to meet such
high bandwidth and capacity requirements is a testament to the evolution of the company and product line,” commented James
McKenna, VP of Marketing and Pre Sales at Facilis Technology. “Working with Media Village, our ability to meet the needs of a
national broadcaster in the APAC region speaks volumes about our customer focus and product quality.”

HUDSON, MA – Facilis, a leading international supplier of cost-effective, high performance shared
storage solutions for collaborative media production networks today announced a large-scale
order for it's TerraBlock shared storage system. Philippines-based ABS-CBN Corporation iPost
(Integrated Post Production) has purchased four TerraBlock Hybrid24 systems, which have already
been delivered and installed at the customer’s Quezon City-based post production facility.
The order was secured by Facilis working in partnership with local authorized reseller, Singapore
and Philippines-based Media Village.
and the use of state-of-the-art technology, the center’s main performance space seats up to 700 people in close proximity to
the musicians with superb sightlines, offering the superb acoustics of a great concert hall and the relaxed intimacy of a jazz club.
Part of the mission of the center is also to digitally open its doors to jazz fans and students through the creation and production of
hundreds of hours of videos that range from concert videos to educational videos.
SFJAZZ Director of video production, Jacob Richmond, explains: “From its initial conception, the venue was built with audio and
video recording and broadcasting in mind to allow us to extend the walls of our unique center into the digital space, and promote
music education for all.”
Last year, Richmond and his team recorded 142 shows and educational videos and archived over 20 terabytes of footage. To help
them with their growing storage needs, they purchased a Facilis TerraBlock 24EX shared storage system from California-based
reseller, Cutting Edge Audio Video Group.
For Richmond and his team, a typical workflow involves capturing a performance with multiple robotic cameras and GoPros that
are live switched to create a single line-cut recording. That line-cut is captured on an Aja Ki Pro and brought into the TerraBlock
system, ready for editing.
“We shoot everything in 1080 HD and capture to ProRes 422 with our AJA Ki Pro which means that for an hour and a half
performance we get about 110 gigabytes per show. We store each show in its native resolution and for quick delivery we also do
an H.264 capture at the same time that is backed up in a separate folder.” said Richmond.
As a non-profit organization, SFJAZZ has a large donor base and a robust board of trustees that keep things running. As ticket
sales continue to rise, the organization continually re-invests in its education programs and co-sponsoring of special events.
“Since education is a large focus for SFJAZZ , we do a lot of events where parents and their kids are invited to shows where
musicians will talk about jazz as a music form, the components of the music itself, and the instruments. Making elements of these
events digitally available to people outside of the center will be a key element of our future strategy,” said Amy Heiden, Technical
Manager for SFJAZZ.
As they continue to grow their catalog of shows, the SFJAZZ team knows that organization and the ability to quickly search for
content in their video libraries will be key. Organizing media in the Facilis system is easy, and knowing that their Facilis TerraBlock
offers integrated asset tracking gives them added confidence as they evolve towards new offerings for digital distribution to their
members and educators in the future.

SFJAZZ GETS INTO THE GROOVE WITH FACILIS TERRABLOCK
SHARED STORAGE SYSTEM ENABLES VIDEO PRODUCTION TEAM TO OPEN ITS VIRTUAL DOORS TO THE PUBLIC
Billed as a “sanctuary for jazz,” the SFJAZZ Center is the first stand-alone
building in the country solely dedicated to jazz. Located only blocks from
San Francisco’s City Hall, SFJAZZ Center is the culmination of a vision
developed by the SFJAZZ organization, which for 30 years presented year-
round concerts, including the San Francisco Jazz Festival in rented venues.
Purpose-built from the ground up in 2013, the 36,000-square- foot two story
facility presents over 300 performances and events year-round, along with
educational programs that reach thousands of students each year.
SFJAZZ Co-founder & Artistic Director Randall Kline’s vision was to build a
venue where technology serves the music. Thanks to an amazing design
recognition, it made sense to use staff who live and breathe the company every day to make the commercials. It also allows us to
save money and pretty much create content on demand.
We have a big turntable that enables us to take 360 degree panoramic shots of all our furniture from sofas to dining chairs so our
customers look online at all their options as if they were in one of our showrooms.
While DSLRs capture some of the content, many of our videos are shot in 6K with a Red Dragon camera so we can share the
high resolution content directly with our in-house graphics and photography department that is responsible for creating all of our
company’s print ads, brochures, billboards, delivery vehicle graphics etc. Shooting in 6K gives us tremendous flexibility, but naturally
puts high demands on a storage system.
With hundreds of hours of high-resolution content and an ever growing photo library containing over three quarters of a million
images, we needed a robust high performance storage solution. Working with Systems Integrator Key Code Media Central in
Chicago, we decided to invest in two 48TB Facilis TerraBlock 24D shared storage systems that enable both our video production
and our graphics departments to organize all this data and also allow various team members to share and access it. Having dual
connectivity to both Fibre Channel as well as Ethernet is a major benefit of the system.
Right now we have at least 8 people who need to access all this content at any given time, using a Fibre Channel connection. We
have created separate volumes for our training videos, for our TV commercial campaigns, as well as for all our graphics work. Using
an Ethernet connection, we can also give access to other members of the marketing team who are located in a different building
when they need to access images for publicity purposes or other creative projects.
Using FastTracker, the Facilis system’s integrated tracking application, we are able to easily catalog, search and view any media
within the TerraBlock Shared Storage System.
This is just the right amount of media management for our workflow, because we didn’t want to take away time from creating
content to manage all of our data. We needed fast, intuitive search with the ability to instantly view what we’ve found, and
immediately access that on our editing systems. FastTracker has made us more productive. There’s no training required, it just does
what you expect. I was surprised how easy it was to find a clip, and simply drag and drop it into my project with no additional steps.
The learning curve with our TerraBlock’s has been pretty smooth and the support we have received from Facilis has been stellar.
The systems are solid as a rock. They allow all of us to concentrate on our own tasks rather than worrying about the technology so
we can get our jobs done right the first time.
