Your complete satisfaction with yourHonda automobile is our main goal.All personnel at Honda automobiledealerships are thoroughly trained toprovide the best service for yourvehicle. If you are not satisfied withany maintenance or repair work doneby the dealership, follow these threesteps:

Step 1 - Talk over your concernswith the dealership’s management,such as the Service Manager orGeneral Manager. In most cases, asatisfactory solution is found at thisstep.

Step 2 - We recognize that, on someoccasions, a customer will not betotally satisfied with a dealer’sdecision or actions in Step 1. If thisis the case, you should call or writethe Honda Customer Relations ZoneOffice. The address and telephone

number are on the inside frontcover. Please provide the followinginformation:

• Year, model, and VehicleIdentification Number of yourvehicle, and its current mileage.

• The name of the dealer who soldyou the vehicle.

• The name of the dealer whoservices your vehicle.

• Date, mileage, and reason foreach visit to a Honda dealership.

• Any non-Honda dealership repairservice for the problem(s).

• Your daytime and eveningtelephone numbers.

The staff of the Customer RelationsZone Office is interested in working

with you and the dealership to find asatisfactory solution.Step 3 - If you disagree with thedecision reached by the staff of theHonda Customer Relations ZoneOffice, you may request to have yourcase reviewed in an independentforum run by the Council of BetterBusiness Bureaus (BBB). Thisprogram is called “BBB AUTOLINE.” You may file a claim at anytime by calling the Better BusinessBureau, toll-free, at 1-800-955-5100.Your call will be automaticallydirected to the BBB in your area.

manufacturers and their customers.BBB AUTO LINE’s decision makersare impartial third parties who willlisten to both the customer and themanufacturer and decide what canbe done to resolve the disagreement.

The BBB AUTO LINE’s decision isnot binding on you unless you agreeto accept it. If you accept thedecision, Honda will abide by it.Generally, disputes submitted toBBB AUTO LINE are resolvedwithin 40 days (47 days if you havenot first contacted Honda about yourcomplaint).

Honda offers you the opportunity tomediate and arbitrate a disagreementthrough BBB AUTO LINE becausewe want you to feel that you havebeen treated fairly.

Eligibility is limited by your vehicle’sage, mileage, and other factors. Inorder to file a claim, you need toprovide your name and address, theVehicle Identification Number of yourvehicle, and a brief statementoutlining the disagreement. Initially,BBB may try to resolve thedisagreement through mediation. Ifthis is not successful, your complaintwill be reviewed by an impartial,volunteer arbitrator. You may presentthe facts of your case to the arbitratorat an informal meeting.

We encourage you to use thisprogram before, or instead of, goingto court. It is informal, free ofcharge to you, and generallyresolves problems much faster thanthe court system. Lawyers areusually not involved in theresolution of claims through the

BBB, although you may obtain oneat your own expense if you choose.

If you want to go to court, we do notrequire you to first file a claim withBBB AUTO LINE. Please note thatlaws in some states may require thatyou file a claim with BBB AUTOLINE before you can proceed to astate-operated dispute resolutionprocess or the court system. If you donot accept the decision of BBB AUTOLINE, you can still go to court.

Lemon LawsMany states have enacted what arecommonly referred to as “LemonLaws.” Although the details of theselaws vary from state to state, theirmain purpose is to assure youcertain rights if you have problemswith your new vehicle. In generalterms, these laws usually say that ifyour vehicle has a problem thatcannot be repaired in severalattempts, or has a series of problemsthat keep it out of service for anextended period, you may qualifyfor relief under the lemon law inyour state.

Some states require you to notify themanufacturer about the problem(s),and some states give themanufacturer, or its representative, achance to correct the problem(s). Astate may require you to submit yourcomplaint to a dispute resolutionprogram, such as BBB AUTO LINE,before proceeding to other forums.

Lemon Laws have many provisions.If you feel your new Honda qualifiesfor consideration under the lemonlaw in your area, we suggest youcheck the laws in your state.

Honda may cover, under a specialadjustment program, some or all ofthe cost to repair a problem that isnot covered by your vehicle’slimited warranties.

If your vehicle develops a problemyou feel should be repaired byHonda at no cost, discuss it withyour dealer.

If you are not satisfied with yourHonda dealer’s decision, call orwrite the Honda Customer RelationsZone Office (the address andtelephone number are on the insidefront cover). Please provide thisinformation about your vehicle:year, model, Vehicle IdentificationNumber (VIN), mileage,maintenance history, a detailedexplanation of the problem, and whyyou think Honda should beresponsible for the repair. Yourrequest will be investigated, and youwill be informed of Honda’sdecision.

12 Your Warranties in Detail

The warranty coverages in thisbooklet are offered only to the owner of a 1999 Honda automobile.To be covered, the vehicle must bedistributed by American Hondathrough the Honda AutomobileDivision, and sold by a Hondaautomobile dealer in the UnitedStates, Puerto Rico, or the U.S.Virgin Islands.NOTE: American Honda does notdistribute the 1999 Passport SportUtility Vehicle in Puerto Rico or theU.S. Virgin Islands. Therefore, thesewarranty coverages do not apply toany 1999 Passport that is registeredor normally driven in those areas.Parts replaced under any of thewarranties in this booklet becomethe property of Honda. Honda willmake the final decision whether torepair any existing part or assemblyor replace it.Honda may use factory-remanufactured parts rather than new

parts for some warranty repairs.Those parts, like new parts, arecovered for the remainder of the NewVehicle Limited Warranty (see page 13).The warranties in this booklet do notcover:• The failure of any part or

accessory due to:– Abuse, misuse, accidental

damage, or acts of God.– Improper installation or

maintenance.– A low fluid level or the use of a

fluid other than specified byHonda.

– The installation of any part thatis not equal to the original inquality of materials orworkmanship.

– Use of the vehicle incompetition or racing events.

• Any installed part or accessory thatfails because it was not designed tofit that year and model of Honda.

• Any vehicle with an odometer thathas been altered so it is impossibleto determine the actual mileage.

• Any vehicle while it is registeredor normally driven outside theUnited States, Puerto Rico, or theU.S. Virgin Islands.

• Any failure caused by modifyingthe vehicle, or installing accessoriesnot authorized by Honda.

• Any incidental expenses orinconvenience you may suffer dueto the loss of use of your vehicle.

• Any vehicle that has ever beendeclared a total loss or sold forsalvage by a financial institutionor insurer, or that has been issueda “salvage” or similar title underany state’s law. This exclusion doesnot apply to the EmissionsWarranties, the Seat Belt LimitedWarranty, the Replacement PartsLimited Warranty, or any recallsor other campaigns.

Time and Mileage PeriodThis warranty begins on the date thevehicle is put into use in one of thefollowing ways:

• The vehicle is delivered to thefirst purchaser by a Honda dealer.

• The vehicle is leased.

• The vehicle is used as ademonstrator or company vehicle.

Your vehicle is covered for 3 yearsor 36,000 miles, whichever comesfirst.

Warranty CoverageHonda will repair or replace anypart that is defective in materialor workmanship under normal use.See Proper Operation on page 40.All repairs/replacements made underthis warranty are free of charge. The

replaced or repaired parts arecovered only until this New VehicleWarranty expires.

This Warranty Does Not Cover:• Emissions control systems,

Accessories, Battery, or Tires.(They have their own warranties.)

• Normal wear or deterioration ofany part.

• Cleaning and polishing.

• The adding of any fluids, unlessthey are needed as part of awarranty repair.

• Air conditioner refrigerant chargeafter the first year, unlessrequired as part of a warrantyrepair.

• Broken, chipped, or scratchedwindow glass unless it is due toa defect in material orworkmanship.

• Any item concerning yourvehicle’s general appearance thatis not due to a defect in materialor workmanship.

or replaced under this warranty.Rust that does not perforate, but iscaused by a defect in material orworkmanship, is covered under theNew Vehicle Limited Warranty. Youwill not be charged for any parts,material, or labor under thiswarranty. The decision to repair,rather than replace, any rusted bodypanel will be made by Honda.

This Warranty Does Not Cover:• Surface rust on the underbody or

any other part of the vehicle exceptbody panels.

• Rusting of body panels that wererepaired, replaced, or refinishedafter retail sale of the vehicle,unless those panels were repairedor replaced under this warranty.

• Body panel rust caused by abuse,misuse, or lack of maintenance.

• Rusting where the paint has beendamaged by road hazards such asstones and debris.

• Rust caused by immersion of thebody panel in water, mud, orsand; or resulting from exposureto corrosive gas or industrialfallout.

• Paint matching. (Honda reservesthe right to decide how much ofthe repaired or replaced panel,and any adjoining body panels,need to be repainted to match theoriginal finish. Honda will not,under any circumstances,authorize painting the entirevehicle strictly for the purpose ofpaint matching.)

Audio System Component Exchange ProgramIf the audio system in your Hondadevelops a problem during thiswarranty period, telephone theService Department at your Hondadealer. The service person will askyou several questions about yourvehicle and the problem. If hedecides from this conversation thatthe problem is in one of the system’smajor components (radio, CDplayer), he will immediately order areplacement component. This willtake less than a week. You will thenbe notified to bring your vehicle tothe dealership so the audio systemcan be repaired. Telephoning yourdealer about an audio systemproblem allows him to serve youmore efficiently and can save you anextra trip.

Honda may use factory-remanufactured audio componentsrather than new components forsome warranty repairs. Thosecomponents, like new components,are covered for the remainder of theAccessory Limited Warranty.

This Warranty Does Not Cover:• Air conditioner refrigerant charge

after the first year, unlessrequired as part of a warrantyrepair.

• Any accessory installed on aHonda other than the year ormodel it was designed to fit.

• Any accessory that is improperlyinstalled.

• Any claim presented withoutproof of accessory purchaseand/or installation date andvehicle mileage at time ofinstallation.

If the warranted muffler fails due toa defect, Honda will exchange it.You must have proof of purchase forthe failed muffler. If the muffler wasoriginally installed by a Hondadealer, the cost of labor for removaland replacement is also covered bythis warranty.

This Warranty Does Not Cover:• Labor cost for removal and

replacement if the defectivemuffler was not originallyinstalled by a Honda dealer.

• Other parts of the exhaust system,including pipes, gaskets, hangers,clamps, or other mountinghardware.

Proper OperationYour Honda is designed for use as apassenger vehicle. You should use itto transport people and their luggageon regular roads and highways.Several things you should do to takecare of your Honda are:

• Avoid exceeding your vehicle’sload limit. This puts excess strainon the engine, brakes, and severalother systems in your vehicle.Refer to the Owner’s Manual tofind the location of the Load Limitlabel on your vehicle.

• Operate your Honda onreasonable roads within the legalspeed limit.

• Drive your Honda regularly overa distance of several miles. Like aperson, a vehicle functions betterwith regular exercise.

• Always use an unleaded gasolineof the proper Octane Number(Anti-Knock Index). See yourOwner’s Manual for moreinformation.

MaintenanceYou should check the engine oil andradiator coolant levels each time youfill the gas tank. This protects thevital systems of your Honda, andmay help you discover potentialproblems.

Always maintain your 1999 Hondaaccording to the MaintenanceSchedule in your Owner’s Manual.The time and mileage intervalsgiven in this Schedule forinspections and replacements shouldnever be exceeded. They areessential to trouble-free operation.Parts that fail because they didnot get proper, timelymaintenance are not covered bywarranty. However, if a part failsdue to a defect in material orworkmanship, the warranty claimwill not be denied because ofimproper maintenance or operation.

The people at your Honda dealer arefully trained and equipped toefficiently perform scheduledmaintenance on your 1999 Honda.However, service at the dealer is notmandatory for continued warrantycoverage. You can have scheduledmaintenance done somewhere otherthan your Honda dealer, or you cando the maintenance yourself.

If you regularly take your vehicle tothe Honda dealer for scheduledmaintenance, he will know itshistory if you need to make awarranty claim. If someone else hasbeen performing the maintenance,the dealer may ask for evidence thatyou have properly maintained thevehicle. This evidence may consistof one or more of the following:

• A Maintenance Record (such asthe one in the Owner’s Manual)showing the odometer mileageand date for each service. Eachentry in this Record should besigned by a person who isqualified to service automobiles.

• Copies of repair orders or otherreceipts that include the odometermileage and date that the vehiclewas serviced. Each receipt shouldbe signed by a qualifiedautomotive service technician.

• A statement that you completedthe maintenance yourself,showing the odometer mileageand date you did the work.Receipts for the replacement parts(fluids, filters, etc.) shouldaccompany this statement.

NOTE: As an aid for the nextowner, keep all maintenancereceipts with the vehicle if it is sold.

You should take your vehicle, alongwith proof of purchase date, to aHonda automobile dealer during hisnormal service hours. If yourwarranty claim is for a replacementpart or accessory that was originallyinstalled by a Honda dealer, takealong proof of the vehicle’s mileageat the time of installation.

If your vehicle cannot be driven,contact the Honda automobile dealernearest to you for towing assistance.You do not have to pay for towingto the nearest Honda dealer if thefailure is covered by any of thewarranties in this book.

Emergency RepairsHonda recognizes that your vehiclecould develop a serious problemneeding immediate repair at afacility other than a Honda dealer.

Honda will reimburse you for therepair if:

• The repair would normally becovered by one of the warrantiesin this booklet.

and

• All Honda dealers within 50miles of the break-down wereclosed at the time, or there wereno Honda dealers within 50miles.

and

• The vehicle was immobile, orattempting to drive the vehiclewould cause further damage or beunsafe.

For reimbursement, go to anyHonda automobile dealer. You mustshow a copy of the paid receipt, andthe replaced part(s). The dealer willreimburse you for the parts at thecurrent manufacturer’s suggestedretail price; and you will bereimbursed for labor at ageographically-appropriate laborrate for Honda’s recommended timeallowance.

Traveling Outside the United StatesIf you are planning to use yourHonda to travel outside the U.S.,you may want to contact the HondaConsumer Affairs Office. They cangive you information on Hondadistributors in the area you plan tovisit. You should also contact thetourist bureaus in the areas you willbe traveling in to find out about theavailability of unleaded gasoline withthe proper octane rating.

Relocating Outsidethe United StatesAny vehicle purchased from anauthorized Honda dealer in thiscountry is manufactured to meetU.S. government safety andemissions specifications. Othercountries not only market differentHonda models, they also have their

own safety and emissions standardsthat differ from U.S. requirements.

If you plan to export your vehicle toanother country and register it there,we recommend that you contact thevehicle import agency in thatcountry to determine therequirements. American Hondadoes not have this information.

Be advised that modificationsto your vehicle to meet anothercountry’s requirements may bevery expensive and, in some cases,impossible to perform. Parts tomodify a vehicle to meet foreignspecifications are not available inthe U.S.

Getting your vehicle serviced inanother country may be difficult,even if you take it to a Hondadealer. Because that country mayhave models with different

equipment and specifications, thedealer may not have parts that aresuitable for your U.S. vehicle.

Warranty CoverageOutside the United States
