E5100 – BI-DIRECTIONAL

KNIFE GATE VALVE (KGV)

PART 1 GENERAL

1.01 SUBMITTALS

A. Submit detailed product data and descriptive literature including dimensions, weights, pressure rating and

materials of construction.

B. Provide general assembly drawings (GAD) which clearly illustrates the general arrangement, orientation of

the equipment and cross-sectional views of the components along with the bills of materials (BOM) capturing

the materials of construction and the respective quantities.

PART 2 PRODUCT

2.01 MANUFACTURER

A. Knife Gate valve manufacturer shall be Elite Valve, model E5100 size ranging from 2” to 42” bi-directional

shutoff or agency approved equal.

2.02 Design Features (2 to 42inch)

A. General: Valve shall be MSS-SP81 and TAPPI-TIS 405 compliant and designed for a working pressure of 150

psi(1034kPa) for valves up to and including 300mm diameter / NPS 12”. The valve shall be perimeter seated

with no scheduled maintenance requirements. The end connection shall be lugged / flanged

B. Body: The valve body shall be of at least 316 stainless steel full port with integral flanges complying MSS SP-

81 or ASME B16.5 carbon steel pipe flanges and flanged fittings, Class 150, or as shown in plans or valve

schedule. Top works shall be supported by either 4 stainless steel beams / stanchions with four stainless tie

rods or stainless-steel yoke with self-lubricating PTFE and brass bearings.

C. Gate: The valve gate shall be 316 stainless steel, machined, ground smooth and all corners rounded. It shall be

guided completely for extended packing life.

D. Stem: Valve shall have a 304 stainless steel, rising stem with minimum single lead, left hand, trapezoid type

screw thread along with a corrosion resistant bronze bushing and a single piece clevis to ensure maximum

torque, smoother operation and high strength.

E. Seat: Valve seat shall be fully encapsulated replaceable Nitrile / EPDM seat allowing for bidirectional flow.

F. Packing – Teflon impregnated yarn with resilient core.

G. Operator: Valves actuator / gear mounting kits are provided as per customer requirements which includes but

not limited to: -

a. Handwheel gear actuator: Gear operator with hand wheels fabricated from ductile iron, epoxy coated

with bronze fastening nut. Handwheel shafts can also be extended to suit customer needs and can be

coupled with square nut. The existing manual gear operator can also be coupled with the galvanized

steel of custom chainwheel length in order to operate the valve. The gear shall indicate the direction

of operation.

b. Electric actuators as per customer requirements can also be mounted onto the valve. Electric limit

switches shall also be provided upon request.

Valves shall meet all pressure and test requirements as detailed in MSS SP-81 & TAPPI-TIS 405-8 as

follows:

A. Operational Test: Full assembled valve along with the actuator shall be tested to fully open and close

under no flow condition.

B. Shell test: The valve shall be subjected to a fluid pressure of 1.5 times the rated pressure. No visible

leakage from inside to outside is allowed. Duration of maintaining the valve under pressure shall be no

less than 1 minute or as per customer requirement. Reports confirming the final test results shall be

available to the agency before the shipment.

C. Seat Test: Post shell test each valve shall be hydrostatically pressure tested in both direction at 1.1times

the maximum differential pressure with valve closed.

PART 3 – EXECUTION

3.01 PREPARATION

All foreign material / dirt will be removed from the product prior to shipping.

3.02 INSTALLATION

Valves shall be installed in accordance with the best trade practices to ensure that both the product and user

are in good and safe condition during the life cycle of the product.

3.03 DELIVERY & STORAGE

a) Product shall be stored as per manufacturer requirements stated in the Instruction Operation Manual

(IOM).

b) During loading, transportation and installation, every precaution shall be considered to prevent valve

damage.

c) Documents on how to install the valve, actuator and manufacturer’s warranty of the product shall be

supplied along.

Specification for Ductile Iron Chainwheels, Chain-Levers and Safety Restraints

1. Chainwheels

a. All valves with centerlines more than 6 feet above the floor shall be provided with chainwheels.

The chain of each chainwheel shall be looped to extend to within 4 feet of the floor. Valves shall

be installed horizontally, or provided with geared operators to position chainwheels in the

vertical position. The manual overrides of motor operated valves shall be equipped with

chainwheel operators, if the centerline of the valve is more than 6 feet above the floor.

b. Materials of Construction: The chainwheel shall be cast from ductile iron, grade 65-45-12 and

will be the sprocket type design.

c. Chain shall be the single loop type, of stainless steel type 316. The chain shall be calibrated to fit

on the sprocket teeth of the chainwheel. Chain loops shall be made with connecting links

provided by the manufacturer of the chainwheel and chain.

d. Chain Retaining Device: Provide a chain retaining device to hold the chain above the walking

area during non-use. The retaining device shall be polypropylene and safety orange.

e. Safety Restraint Device: The top half of the chain guide shall have a boss and tap to permit

installation of a chainwheel safety restraint system, as specified below. A safety restraint system

shall be installed on each chainwheel, in accordance with the installation instructions of the

manufacturer.

f. Chainwheels, chain and safety restraint system shall be as manufactured by Trumbull Industries,

or engineer approved equal.

2. Chain-Levers for Valves with Quarter Turn Lever Operators

a. All quarter turn valves with centerlines more than 6 feet above the floor shall be provided with

chain-levers.

b. Materials of Construction: The chain-lever shall be cast from ductile iron, grade 65-45-12.

c. Chain shall be plated welded machine chain.

d. Chain Retaining Device: Provide a chain retaining device to hold the chain above the walking

area during non-use. The retaining device shall be polypropylene and safety orange.

e. Safety Restraint Device: The chain-lever shall have a boss and tap to permit installation of a

safety restraint system, as specified below. A safety restraint system shall be installed on each

chain-lever, in accordance with the installation instructions of the manufacturer.

3. Chainwheel Safety Restraint System

The Safety Restraint System shall be designed to protect the personnel operating an overhead

valve, in the event the chainwheel assembly should separate from the valve and fall to the

ground.

All components shall be type 316 stainless steel, including the eye-bolt, wire rope cable and

cable clips. The cable shall be a minimum of 7 x 19, ¼” in diameter. The cable must not be

plastic coated, nor sheathed, and must be fastened with cable clips, not by swaged fittings. A

total of 4 cable clips shall be used on each restraint, two clips fastening each end of cable.

The eye-bolt shall be appropriately sized for the application and shall be threaded into the top

half of the chainwheel safety guide. A locking jam nut must be used to secure the eyebolt to the

Safety Restraint Cap.

The manufacturer must provide supporting evidence of a successful drop test of the Safety

Restraint System, based on a 200 # drop, from a length of 4 feet.

Chain-lever, chain and safety restraint system shall be as manufactured by Trumbull Industries,

or engineer approved equal.

Ductile Iron ChainwheelsSprocket-Type, for use with Single Loop Cut Chain

DUCTILE IRON CHAINWHEELS allow operation of valves, actuators, or gear boxes in high, hard-to reach locations by means of a slight pull on the chain. Universal design allows Chainwheel to be clamped to handwheel, or pinned directly to the stem.

Ductile Iron Chainwheels are furnished with plated steel attachment hardware for clamping to a handwheel.When Chainwheel is to be pinned to the stem, direct mount adapters are available. The adapters require pinning to the stem as illustrated on page G-56. Adapter is pre-drilled with pin hole, and supplied with a stainless steel pin for customer mounting to the stem. Drilling of the stem by customer. To prevent serious injury, we recommend the use of our Secondary Safety Restraint System (see pages G-59 and G-60). All Trumbull Chainwheels are furnished with a threaded boss for the addition of our Safety Restraint System.

If a Chainwheel is properly installed, maintained and inspected, it should never separate from the valve and fall to the ground. Although the likelihood of a Chainwheel falling is small, the result could be a serious injury or even a fatality.

Safety Cable Kits can be economically added to the Chainwheel installation. One end is attached to the Chainwheel and the other to a permanent part of the valve or an adjacent pipe.

Cable, clips and eyebolts are made from Type 316 stainless steel for long life in even the most corrosive environments.

Offering the perfect actuator automating any valve – this is the milestone defi ned by AUMA. The new sizes of the GHT gearbox type range play a key role within AUMA's modular product portfolio. The abbreviation “HT” of the gearbox name GHT stands for “High Torque”.

The torque ranges of SA multi-turn actuators are between10 Nm and 32,000 Nm. When combined with a GHT worm gearbox, the maximum output torque is multiplied. Up to 120,000 Nm can be achieved.

Wide application rangeSA multi-turn actuators and GHT gearboxes are available for both open-close and modulating duties and are also approved for use in potentially explosive atmospheres. The combinations can thus be used in technical process plants of the most different sectors – from water management and power plant sector right through to the petrochemical industry.

High enclosure protectionMulti-turn actuator/gearbox combinations are supplied with improved enclosure protection IP68 according to EN 60529. The permissible immersion height of 8 m head of water for max. 96 hours results from enclosure protection IP68 of the multi-turn actuator. During continuous immersion, the actuator can perform up to ten operations.

High corrosion protectionClassifi ed in corrosivity categories C5-I and C5-M, SA multi-turn actuators and GHT gearboxes meet the highest requirements defi ned in EN ISO 12944-2. They are therefore suitable for use in areas with high salinity, almost permanent condensation, and high pollution.

ColourThe standard colour is silver-grey (similar to RAL 7037). Other colours are available.

ON MISSION

WEIR PENSTOCKS

Weirs are installed for water level control of different water bodies and to ensure navigability of rivers and channels. Demands on reliability are extremely high.

Actual level control is executed by positioning the weir penstocks. As a general rule, electric actuators are used for automation.

Due to most varied ambient conditions, dams and weirs nealry always require special solutions. Marginal conditions are the key factors for sizing the actuators used. Do reserves for ice and wind load have to be considered and how does drift material deposit at the weir influence load over time?

The large variety of combination options for SA actuators and GHT gearboxes allow for configuration of actuator solutions working reliably even under the most adverse conditions.

SA/GHT combinations can be used for all valves requiring a rotary movement for automation, including gate valves, globe valves or special valves such as double block and bleed valves.

No matter whether standard valve design or special valves are involved: there is no standard solution for valve automation. The valve requires the actuator to provide either torque or thrust at defined running speed via a certain period in compli-ance with the respective type of duty. On the other hand, the actuator has to be integrated into an existing distributed control system with various functional requirements. Each AUMA actuator has been configured for the specific applica-tion.

This applies to the smallest multi-turn actuator with 30 Nm output torque to the large SA/GHT combination with 120,000 Nm. AUMA continuously confirm their capability of providing ideal automation solutions for all types of industrial valves, even for the high torque ranges. Here, we would like to present some examples.

AUTOMATION OF COKER VALVES

Delayed coking systems transform the residual oil generated when refining crude oil and crack it into gas oil and petroleum coke. The heart of the plant is a coke drum with a height of more than 40 metres where the conversion processes take place at high tempera-tures. Once the process is finished, both ends of the drum have to be opened to discharge the coke. By using automated special valves, manual opening, which is both dangerous and time-consuming while requiring large numbers of personnel, becomes obsolete.

The double-stem gate valves used weigh up to 60 tons, with diameters up to 1,800 mm, and require thrusts of 2,800 kN.

Automation can be assured by means of two GHT gearboxes which are operated simultaneously by an explosion-proof SAEx multi-turn actuator.

DAMPER AUTOMATION

Large dimension dampers in various designs are used for controlling incoming air and exhaust gas flows within thermal power plants. Whether used with high pressure dampers, louvre dampers, guillotine isolators or diverters, SA/GHT combinations will supply sufficient torque so that the number of drive units can be kept at a minimum.

Furthermore, many different conventional valves are used within power plants which can all be automated using AUMA actuators. This allows for uniform integration of all valves including dampers into the DCS.

GHT worm gearboxesThe hardened and ground tooth fl anks of the worm shaft combined with the worm wheel made of bronze ensure low wear and guarantee an exceptionally long lifetime of these gearboxes. The worm shaft with anti-friction bearing ensures high effi ciency and prevents critical warming of the gearboxes for long operating times. Optimised housing design reduces weight and consequently the load to be borne by the valve. Housing parts are made of lamellar graphite cast iron (GJL). On request they are available in spherulitic graphite cast iron (GJS).

As an option, the GHT is also available as reversing version. Clockwise actuator rotation at the gearbox input will be converted into counterclockwise rotation at the gearbox output.

11 Valve attachmentThe mechanical interface to the valve is standardised. Flange dimensions were adopted from EN ISO 5211 standard.

The standard output drive is a bore with keyway, which is mainly based on output drive types B defi ned in EN ISO 5210. However, the standard does not fully cover the dimensions of the GHT gearboxes.

As an alternative to output drive type A, the spring-loaded output drive type AF can be used. The springs compensate for dynamic axial forces when operating at high speeds and even for thermal expansion of the valve stem.

Integral actuator controls (option)Controls, in our example the microprocessor controlled AC, are available with different interfaces to the DCS – either for parallel signal transmission or fi eldbus communication. Profi bus DP, Modbus RTU, DeviceNet as well as Foundation Fieldbus are supported. DCS connection using HART or wireless HART is also possible.

Advanced diagnostic functions enable preventive maintenance and integration of actuators into asset management systems.

The integral local controls allow for local actuator operation.

Electric SA multi-turn actuatorThe torque of the electric motor is transmitted to the hollow shaft via a self-locking worm gearing. Sensor technology for limit and torque seating is integrated within the actuator.

Multi-turn actuators are available in four versions:
