CUTPRO in Academia

Connecting Theory and Practice:Use combinations of

CUTPRO Modules in the Classroom and Laboratory

Manufacturing Automation Laboratories (MAL) Inc. was founded in 1996 by Dr. Yusuf Altintas - Professor of the Mechanical Engi-neering and Director of Manufacturing Automation Laboratory at the University of British Columbia - to disseminate his research algorithms and knowledge to machining industry.

In his view, the area of machine tools, metal cutting, computer numerically controlled (CNC), computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) and sensor-assisted intelligent machining is quite wide; each requires an academic and engineering experience to un-derstand a manufacturing operation that uses all of them in an integrated fashion. In terms of metal cutting - one of the most widely used manufacturing processes to produce the final shape of products - its technology continues to advance in parallel with development in materials, computers and sensors. A blank is converted into a final product by cutting extra material away with the operations conducted on CNC machine tools.

The result of his work is embedded in machining science soft-ware masterpiece: CutPro which features advanced machining process simulation software, CNC machine tool & robot control software and sensor based machining process control & monitor-ing programs. Here, mathematics, physics, computers, software packages and instrumentation become useful integration tools in analyzing or designing machine tools and machining processes.

Around the world, engineers and researchers in various com-panies and research institutions are using MAL Inc. software to identify stable and unstable cutting conditions, calculate the cutting forces, torque and power, diagnose the weak fixtures and machining set-ups, design and analyze spindles, and simulate multi-axis CNC systems.

CUTPRO® VIRTUAL CNCEducational License

MACHPRO™ is the most advanced process simulation and NC program optimization software. MACHpro can correct the NC code while optimizing the machining time without violating ma-chine tool-cutting tool limits. One of the MACHpro benefits is to automatically optimize and improve process prior to actual machining process.

MACHpro Educational License includes 12 licenses running from the University server and one year of unlimited and free of charge technical support, maintenance and license upgrades. For more information on MACHpro software and curriculum sug-gestions, please contact us.

Virtual CNC System works in MATLAB™ Simulink environment. It can read standard NC APT files or manually entered motion commands and has trajectory generation with input shaping, up to 5 axis kinematic configuration, linear-circular-spline interpo-lation, and various motion control algorithms in the library; ball screw and linear motor models including built in Finite Element model of drives; structural dynamics of the drive in the control model; active damping; contour error prediction and with a look ahead compensation; complex friction models and cutting load disturbance analysis. The user can add new control and other modules to the Virtual CNC library and try them in a realistic CNC environment without re-inventing entire CNC. There are pre-prepared drive model identification, digital control design, and two axis trajectory generation and interpolation laboratory assign-ments for teaching. Students can learn how to design and control up to 5 axis ma-chines from A to Z in few minutes.

VCNC Educational License includes 12 licenses running from the University server and one year of unlimited and free of charge technical support, maintenance and licenses upgrades. The university must have a valid MATLAB SIMULINK license to run Virtual CNC.

Sample Curriculum with use of CUTPRO® Educational System

1. Mechanics of Metal CuttingMaterial data base design: Cutting force coefficients can be constructed from orthogonal to oblique cutting transformation and mechanistic methods. Student can define any type of cutting force coefficient model using mathematical editor. They also can compare their own calculations against highly advanced prediction provided by CutPro. Project: CutPro is accompanied by series of experimentally proven examples for each category. 2. Machine Tool DynamicsStudents can measure the Frequency Response Function (FRF) of the machine at the tool tip or conduct full experimental modal analysis using CutPro. Project: Instructor can ask students to measure a real time machine and conduct modal analysis. Students can also try to dublicate the mathematical models and compare them against CutPro predictions. 3. Machine Tool VibrationsStudents can design a cutter, select material, enter modal parameters of the machine tool and workpiece at the tool contact point and simulate the process most accurately as follows *Predict the chatter stability lobes in frequency domain using the theory developed by Altintas and Budak; *Select cutting condition from the stability chart and predict cutting forces, torque, vibrations, chip thickness history, surface form errors, vibration history and frequency, bending moment at the bearings. Project: Students can measure the machine, predict the stability and conduct cutting tests to verify/analyze the process.4. Cutting TestsMALDAQ Module is a dedicated metal cutting data acquisition software. It has built-in filters, FFT analyzer, harmonic analysis, time distance measurement and chatter detection features. Furthermore, it has a Kalman Filter to compensate the dynamics of dynamometers for high speed cutting force measurement which is unique to CutPro.
