Teaching Philosophy Teaching narrative

My allocation of effort for teaching is 35%, with emphasis area being nutrition and beef cattle management. My teaching philosophy is centered on practical application of complex concepts. I feel that if you can demonstrate how complex metabolic pathways contribute to tangible outcomes such as muscle growth or reproductive success, you stimulate a student’s desire to learn. To date, I have taught two classes per semester, one dual listed undergrad/graduate level course (Ruminant Nutrition), one undergraduate course (Beef Production) and three graduate courses (Graduate Seminar and Advanced Nutrition: Cow/Calf & Stocker; Range Nutrition Techniques). I have eagerly sought feedback from students and have attended Teaching Academy programs for ideas to create lecture formats that are more engaging. One thing that continues to be indicated in my course evaluations is that students appreciate my practical application and real-world examples. They appreciate that I have had experience in the industry and speak the “lingo” and can bring that to the classroom. This is particularly noticeable when students come to me for advice for their family ranch. I also work very hard to find job and graduate school opportunities with my industry and academic contacts. I attempt to bring as many students as possible to the CRLRC to provide more real-world experience. I also invite students to participate in data collection, which has developed interest in graduate school in a number of the undergraduates that I have had in class. I love to inspire students to learn and I hope that my enthusiasm is contagious and students develop a passion for the livestock industry.

Handbooks or workbooks Although I do not have anything that has been peer-reviewed or copyrighted, I do provide students with material that goes beyond what is covered in class with the intent of their course material becoming reference material in their future endeavors.

Comparing and contrasting various modalities for delivery of instruction Through the education that I have received from the Teaching Academy I have tried various methods of providing lectures. I have also provided surveys to the students asking what type of

Page 12: CV Eric J. Scholljegerdes - New Mexico State University · Eric J. Scholljegerdes - CV . Rangeland Ecology and Management 2011 – 2014 . Associate Editor – Production . Journal

Eric J. Scholljegerdes - CV

lecture format they prefer. I then take that information and based on the majority of responses received, I adjust my lecture format to meet the recommendation of as many of the students as possible. In the upper level graduate courses, I feel that in depth discussions with fewer notes are most effective, as it appears that graduate students prefer to openly discuss concepts and in most cases in-depth material that would have been covered in lecture notes is discussed on the chalk board. I would call this more – student directed learning which something that I learned at the Teaching Academy.

Creating, revising and/or testing assessment tools As I taught more courses I started to realize that retention of material from one semester to another was lacking. Therefore, I started implementing methods to ensure students retain information. One example was a pre- and post-knowledge surveys with a set of questions that covers material or major points that I hope each student leaves class knowing. Of course one hopes that they remember all the intricate details discussed in class but this is not always the case. I have found that this in addition to providing more tests throughout the semester is appreciated by the students. I have provided 100 study questions for the undergraduate Beef Production class and then select 50 of these questions for the exam. This seems to give them a better feel for the information that they will be tested over and they are better able to study pertinent material. In my dual listed (Undergrad and Grad) Ruminant Nutrition course, I use a blend of true/false, fill in the blank, multiple choice, pathway/figure identification, and essay. Undergraduates are only required to answer three of the six essay and graduate students answer all six essay. This is done so that I can assess the undergrads understanding of the details, and with more weight being placed on essay questions for graduate students, they are forced to know the details and apply them to a broader problem set. In addition, I provide the opportunity for students to take a written or oral final in ruminant nutrition. This of course takes a great deal of my time; I am able to truly assess what each student has learned over the course of the semester. In beef production, I assign a large Ranch Management program. This becomes a very comprehensive assignment where students must utilize all aspects of knowledge learned throughout the semester as it relates to nutrition, health, forage management, and marketing of various products in each sector of the beef industry (cow/calf/stocker/feedlot).

Developing new educational strategies I try to incorporate as much practical information in each lecture as possible so that the students may see “why they need to know this”. I feel that in order to stimulate their enthusiasm to learn metabolic pathways they must know how it relates to something that is measureable or tangible (ie, passage rate dynamics can influence diet digestibility and microbial efficiency). In my advanced nutrition (cow/calf) course I provide most of the lecture material from refereed journal papers so that students can see that what is “common knowledge” in the cow/calf industry all originated from research much similar to their research. This also lends itself to lively discussion on data interpretation, research quality, and experimental design, which students seem to appreciate.

General instruction area Ruminant Nutrition with an emphasis on range nutrition in the cow/calf, sheep, and stocker sectors.

Nature of courses taught I have had a number of wildlife majors enroll in ruminant nutrition and students from AXED enroll in beef production. Two production courses are required for Animal Science majors; they elect which ones they prefer to take. The remaining courses are graduate level with Graduate seminar being required over two semesters for all Animal Science graduate students. Advanced nutrition Cow/calf, stocker, and Range Nutrition Techniques are graduate electives.

Beef Production: I utilize animal handling facilities at the beef and dairy units. Students are provided opportunities to correctly administer injections, pull calves, brand calves, ultrasound carcasses, castrate, conduct breeding soundness exams, palpate reproductive tracts, and pass an artificial insemination rod. I also demonstrate proper sampling of hay, grains, and water for laboratory analysis (as would be done on a ranch). These require the use of alley ways, chutes, palpation stanchions, obstetric equipment and ANIMALS. Students are also encouraged to attend the Ranchers Roundtable and travel to CRLRC for work days. In lecture, I utilize PowerPoint, YouTube video’s, VHS video’s, and excel spreadsheets. Ruminant Nutrition: I utilize digestive tracts from the meat lab to demonstrate the various structures in the ruminant stomach. In lecture, I utilize PowerPoint, internet resources that depict animated metabolic pathways (e. g. fatty acid synthesis). I also require the graduate students to provide the class with a 20 minute presentation on a nutrition topic. This not only gives the graduate students an opportunity to gain greater knowledge over a particular subject but the undergraduate students also get the opportunity to listen to other lecture styles. Advanced Nutrition: Cow/calf, stocker: I utilize various data sets from peer-reviewed journal articles and the beef NRC to develop course materials. Students are required to present three papers per semester. This causes the students to gain in depth understanding of research objectives, background, materials and methods and interpretation. I also ask that they point out any shortcomings of the paper, if possible. Range Nutrition Techniques: I utilize ruminally and duodenally cannulated beef heifers as a tool to demonstrate various techniques in animal/range/grazing research. I use a similar format in this class as Advanced Cow/Calf by using peer reviewed literature as lecture material. I also provide them the opportunity to trouble shoot calculation problems as it pertains to external markers. Specifically, I take actual data from other graduate students who are using these markers for research and make the students complete the calculations and interpret data. Tests in this course are challenging. Students are given a hypothesis and must develop objectives and determine what techniques are most appropriate to answer the hypothesis. Graduate Seminar: I provide examples of my own presentations throughout my career. I also ask the senior students to provide their presentations so that we can observe the various ways to put together a well-organized presentation and of course a poorly constructed presentation. I also require students to put together an outline of their presentations and provide it the other students to discuss in class. Students are also required to practice in front of me prior to their seminar. This forces them to practice and allows me to assess their content and organization. Seminars topics or formats developed to date are broad in scope. Firstly, if a student has not presented data at a scientific meeting yet, they are asked to find a paper in their field and give a 12 minute presentation as if it were their own data. This format pushes the student to gain sufficient background knowledge on a particular paper and to develop an understanding of research methods to the point where they can answer any question that may come up. Another format that I feel is very effective is the mock job interview. Students are asked to find a job announcement for a position that they would apply to in the future or in some cases have applied to. This forces the students to develop a seminar that is 30 to 40 minutes in length much like they would in an actual interview. I have also provided students with the opportunity to provide an “Extension style” talk as we do a great job training students to speak scientifically, they often struggle with speaking about science to the lay audience. Students are provided feedback by the audience on gaps in their interview or things that they should not do. Overall, it is my goal to improve our student’s oral communication skills and presentation organization.

Nature of subject matter The nature of all courses changes considerably each year. Of course the basic foundational knowledge of beef cattle physiology, ruminant nutrition does not change. However, science

discovery advances our body of knowledge in animal production, management, health, nutrition, and reproduction each year. Therefore, I must spend a considerable amount of time staying current on newly developed information regarding these areas of beef production and nutrition; above what I need for my research program. I feel that it is important to provide the students with the latest research available on a particular subject. In particular, the field of drug discovery in beef cattle changes very rapidly and recommendations made by veterinarians change accordingly. I also spend a lot of time researching advances in nutrition, reproduction, and fetal programming.

Self-improvement activities related to teaching (see Appendix A) Participated in 45.25 hours of training at the NMSU Teaching Academy I have achieved distinguished member status for the past two years. The courses I have participated in topics ranging from basic teaching skills, communication with students, and the use of different types of media in the classroom. I am also involved in the mentoring program managed by the Teaching Academy. The mentoring program paired me with a promoted faculty member from Plant and Environmental Sciences. This has been a valuable experience to obtain advice on teaching from someone outside of my discipline. I continue to sit in on lectures of my peers to learn new teaching styles and tools.

Other evidence I feel that the high enrollment in ANSC 416 and 484 is attributed to the quality of the course.

Academic advising Methods used

I attempt to be very forward with students as I advise. I ask them pointed questions about their career plans and we assess their academic performance. This is not meant to make the student uncomfortable rather to open the discussion on progress towards their life goals. This is also a time to give a “pep” talk regarding grades if needed. I also take this time to inform students of other options such as graduate school or job opportunities in Animal Science. I also advise a large number of potential students and their parents. I make every attempt to discuss the opportunities that exist at NMSU in the area of Animal Science
