14. Projects done during post graduation studies:

PROJECT – 1 : Studies on evaluation of accident counter measures in Bengaluru city

Traffic management measures viz. One-way roads and erection of barricades was introduced in Bengaluru city in the early 90’s. In the study, the accident data of the selected one-way roads and roads where barricades were erected in Bengaluru city for the period 1990 to 1997 was analyzed using ‘Micro Computer based Accident Analysis Package’ (MAAP - 5) developed by the Transport Research Laboratory (TRL), U.K. Based on the above studies, it was found that, after the introduction of one - way roads, the right turning, overtaking, junction and pedestrian accidents have reduced significantly and there is a marginal increase in fatalities. Erection of barricades has significantly reduced the accidents severity as well as pedestrian accidents, whereas overtaking accidents have increased by 30%.

PROJECT – 2 : Engineering measures to reduce accidents on Bengaluru - Hosur section of NH-7 in Karnataka State

In the study, the characteristics of accidents on NH-7 between km 8.000, Madivala Police station (on the outskirts of Bengaluru city) and km 33.000, Attibele (border of Karnataka state) were studied. The top ten accident-prone locations were identified and their condition and collision diagrams were drawn. The probable causes of the accidents at these locations were studied. Calculate benefits and costs of the proposed improvements. Based on the causes and types of accidents occurred at these accident-prone locations, suitable engineering counter measures were suggested to reduce the accidents.

PROJECT – 3 : Road Safety Audit for Bengaluru - Kolar section of NH-4 in Karnataka State

CV of Yogesh .V.K

In the study, the characteristics of accidents on Bengaluru – Kolar (NH-4) road between km 295.8 to 317.0 were studied for the period 1996 to 1999. The entire road stretch was divided into homogenous stretches based on the geometric features, accident (frequency, density & type) etc. The condition and collision diagrams were drawn for all the road stretches. Based on the causes and types of accidents occurred at the accident-prone locations, suitable cost-effective engineering counter measures were suggested to enhance road safety. The accident rates (Accident rate per kilometer per year, Number of vehicles/drivers involved in accident per 100 million vehicle-kilometer of travel in a year & Number of accidents per 100 million vehicle-kilometer of travel in a year) were determined for the entire road stretches. The accident rates were predicted for future 5 years based on the density of traffic. The accident (fatal, injury, property damage & total) rate per kilometer was the dependent variable and density in PCU per kilometer was the independent variable. Regression analysis was carried out between the above two variables and a regression line that gave the best fit was selected.

Two typical road stretches were selected for economic evaluation of road safety measures. Based on the earlier work done on percentage reduction in accidents due to various improvements, the percentage reduction in predicted number of accidents for the suggested counter measures was calculated for the selected road stretches.

Economic analysis revealed a positive Net Present Value and higher First Year Rate of Return (greater than the market interest rate of 12%) for the selected road stretches.
