ACHIEVEMENTS

Created a 4-week summer program for all incoming freshman for school familiarity, to initiate projects, to acquaint classmates, and begin exploration of the healthcare sector

Developed administrative and academic protocols to include a detailed working plan for whole school

In 2013, IHSCA ranked 59 out of 161 Chicago public schools in the ACT scores with its first graduating class (including magnet and selective schools)

Created a Data Driven/Outcome Based Accountability model, where faculty and staff self-evaluate the achievement of their goals

Developed an education model that integrates career education and work-based learning through pathways, internships and certifications in the healthcare field

Designed and implemented a rigorous science curriculum of 10 courses for all students, from biology to biomedical engineering

Integrated the Biomedical curriculum from “Project Lead the Way” for all students

Created a school-wide Literacy Program where the English Language Arts and Social Studies Departments collaborate to implement reading and writing initiatives

Created an advisory model of personalized relationship between adults and students with a ratio of 15 students per advisor

Developed a fitness and wellness program in partnership with the International Association of Human Values; students learn Yoga, breathing techniques, stress release techniques and practice every day for four years

Created an interdisciplinary and co-teaching model of Special Education Department to serve up to 25% of the school population

Created “The Learning Center” staffed by volunteer college students to provide tutoring and advancement during and after school, Christmas, Spring and Summer breaks

Established a culture of respect among students and adults through development of a social/emotional learning program and implementation of the Learning Communities

Developed pilot pipeline for the Nursing Early College Program, where 8 students from the first class, graduated not only with their high school diploma, but will also be Licensed Practical Nurses

Developed articulation with the Illinois Innovative Talent Program, where interdisciplinary teams of students collaborate on industry-sponsored problems to provide innovative solutions. An example was the work with Baxter in seeking innovative ideas for avoiding preventable hospital-acquired infections and improving the quality of health care for patients by reducing complications and simplifying treatments/devices via new innovations and technologies.

Facilitated the development of an empowered parent organization to work with the school and the community at large to address the needs of students and their families

Formed articulations with more than twelve post-secondary institutions for mentoring and internship programs. Some partners include: University of Chicago, Northwestern University, Rush University, Loyola University, and University of Illinois, Illinois Institute of Technology, Malcolm X Community College, and Wilbur Wright College.

2008 - 2009 SENIOR EDUCATIONAL CHARTER/PATHWAYS SPECIALIST, INSTITUTO DEL PROGRESO LATINO CHICAGO, ILLINOIS RESPONSIBILITIES

Lead the design team of 13 professionals to develop a proposal for a Contract/Charter school with the Chicago Public Schools (CPS). The envisioned school is a college preparatory high school with a career pathway in the health sciences in order to prepare the new generation of doctors, nurses, scientists, veterinarians and other healthcare professionals.

ACHIEVEMENTS

Approval of the proposal by Chicago Public Schools to open the Instituto Health Sciences Career Academy in September 2010

Coordinated with the architectural team the conceptual design of an educational facility. The architect firm JGMA received a Design Excellence Merit Award for Interior Architecture of the Instituto Health Sciences Career Academy

2007 SENIOR ACADEMIC PROJECT MANAGER, YOUTH CONNECTION CHARTER SCHOOL (YCCS) CHICAGO, ILLINOIS RESPONSIBILITIES:

To lead and coordinate the development of a Model of Alternative Urban Education in Career Pathways ACHIEVEMENTS:

Developed the model of IT Career Pathway establishing partnerships with CISCO Systems and Moraine Valley Community College

Created and Developed Assessment Model for the network of 23 high schools which are members of the YCCS network.

2003 - 2007 FOUNDING PRINCIPAL OF MIRTA RAMIREZ COMPUTER SCIENCE CHARTER SCHOOL (MR(cs)2 ), ASPIRA CHICAGO, ILLINOIS RESPONSIBILITIES

Created and developed a charter high school with the mission of serving inner-city-and-at-risk-minority students and to close the digital divide

Implement a rigorous college preparatory curriculum with an intense program in computer technology (2 hours of classes every day for 4 years) aiming to close the digital divide and to build a pipeline that would place all graduate students in college

Provide leadership/supervision to 20 teachers, 4 college advisors and 9 administrative-support staff

ACHIEVEMENTS

Developed the school under the model of an integrated learning community with participation of all stakeholders, and faculty ownership of the curriculum and academic process

In 2005, CPS ranked MR(cs)2 first in “Academic Progress” among 70 high schools in Chicago.

In 2006, also among the CPS’ 70 high schools, MR(cs)2 ranked 13th in the Prairie State Achievement Examination (PSAE) (battery of tests including ACT, Work Keys, and Illinois State Board of Education Science)

In 2007, 100% of senior class was accepted to attend college and secured financial aid at the time of graduation

Throughout the 4 years, implemented and integrated the high school curriculum within the multidisciplinary approach of project based learning methodology

In 2006-07, introduced a Data/Assessment Driven Instruction Process and created a “Failure is not an Option” culture, while developing a sense of academic urgency among faculty and students

Developed a safe educational environment by establishing an organizational culture of core values: Honor Courage and Commitment

Created and developed a College Advisory Model that secured college enrollment and financial aid for the entire graduating class of 2007

Sustained community outreach by implementing annual Problem Based Integrated Projects: Chicago Transit Authority – Blue Line Campaign where students successfully advocated for the continuation of services of the blue line train, the Annual Computer Health Fair for the Community in collaboration with Moraine Valley Community College in which students serviced computers from the community at large while teaching neighbors how to protect and maintain their computers, and Junior Projects in which students research teen issues affecting them and their communities following the Aspira Leadership Model: Awareness, Analysis and Action; the culminating event interactively presents students’ findings and teaches lessons on how to become more proactive.

High Tech High: received mentoring in HTH design principles and training for the entire school staff to implement Project Based Learning methodological and conceptual approach. San Diego, California.

Moraine Valley Community College: developed an internship program with dual enrollment for an Early College Senior Academy Pilot Project. Palos Hills, Illinois.

NorthStar Academy: received training and mentoring in Data/Assessment Driven Instruction. Newark, New Jersey.

CISCO Academy: implemented the CISCO Curriculum. Chicago, Illinois.

ORACLE University implemented the ORACLE Curriculum. Chicago, Illinois. 2002 PROJECT MANAGER, ASPIRA CHICAGO, ILLINOIS RESPONSIBILITIES

Lead a team of 7 professionals assigned to prepare a proposal for a charter high school with focus in Computer Science that was submitted to the Illinois State Board of Education and the Chicago Public Schools in the winter of 2002. The proposal outlined a 24-credit curriculum with 4 years of Math, English, Science and Computer classes. Science used the “Physics First” model and English, the model of reading and writing literacy across the curriculum.

ACHIEVEMENTS

After several rounds in the selection process, the proposal was selected and approved among 5 other candidates competing for the charter school slot.

1998 – 2002 PRINCIPAL OF ANTONIA PANTOJA ALTERNATIVE HIGH SCHOOL (APHS), ASPIRA CHICAGO, ILLINOIS RESPONSIBILITIES

Provided leadership and supervision to 11 teachers, 5 counselors and 4 clerical staff in a 9 -12-grades operation, serving 180 dropout students with the philosophy and methods of alternative education

ACHIEVEMENTS

For 3 years, between 2000 and 2002, APHS ranked among the three top schools in Youth Connection Chicago Charter School, a consortium of 25 alternative high schools

During the same period, the entire graduating class took the ACT, applied for scholarships and admission in institutions of higher education; 100% of students were accepted and above 30% attended college within the same year

Curriculum was expanded from 18 to 24 credits and stricter policies of promotion and attendance were established

Grades D in Math, English and Science were not transferred and these subject required 4 years for graduation

Science adopted the model of “Physics First” and Technology adopted a full computer literacy curriculum included as a graduation requirement

The school year was expanded to include a summer term to experiment with classes in an interdisciplinary 6-week-project-based and a co-teaching model

A minimum of one year (6 credits) residence was required for graduation

Alternative education was integrated with Project Based and Social Problem Based Education

Faculty receives a year around assignment, and payroll extended to 12 months

PARTNERSHIPS

Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU) established a partnership to house APHS in NEIU Westside Campus and offer students the opportunity to have dual enrollment in an Early College Experience.

Space Explorers Program from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to allow students to use the virtual simulation modules of launching and navigating missions to the Moon and Mars

High School Aviation Program from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) to offer students aviation classes, including flying simulator as well as various hours of actual flying

Multimedia Community Program from the School of Communications of Columbia College to enroll students in classes of video and short films production

Chicago Access Network Television (CAN TV) to provide students with internships and training in camera, editing, producing and directing programs in a Public Television Station

1996 - 1997 TECHNOLOGY SPECIALIST INSTRUCTOR AT THE OFFICE OF APPLIED INNOVATION, DEPAUL UNIVERSITY CHICAGO, ILLINOIS RESPONSIBILITIES

Developed and implemented a curriculum of professional development and actualization in the field of computer application and management for ISO 9000 to various companies in the Great Chicago Metropolitan Area

Achievements

Secured the record keeping of a 45 years old professional school with more than 50,000 records including demographic, registration, grades and attendance data from 3 Bachelor Degree programs, 4 Associate Degree programs and 12 Certificates programs

Developed and implemented a computerized Management Information System (MIS) using PARADOX and able to produce student transcripts and various other reports with grades and class attendance rosters for funders and administrative purposes

Developed and implemented a computerized Medical System to input and handle the daily processing of above 3,000 lab sample exams for some 800 patients and more than 300 physicians, medical centers and clinics in the Great Chicago Metropolitan Area
