The following pages are examples of work undertaken during my Post Graduate

Diploma in Urban Design at Strathclyde University. The course website showing

the years work in more detail can be found at http://www.udsu-strath.com.

The purpose for the year was to look at how we could improve the district of

Govan, a well known area in Glasgow with a rich history of ship building although

now suffers from high unemployment, crime rates and generally a much poorer

standard of living.

The above image is the starting point of my final individual presentation stating my

main aims for the area. I want the reader to know from the start what my

fundamental ideas for Govan are and to help explain some of the future images

presented.

The majority of the following images are from my own individual final presentation

which is a result of months of research undertaken in groups. Some of this initial

group research can be found at the end of the portfolio.

The above diagram looks some of the initial work into proposed block densities and the street

hierarchies. This information along with research into block analysis and the Local Urban Code

was used to produce our individual masterplans.

The below image is something that I found very useful in the process and looks at how new

proposals can improve permeability in a subject area. It looks at providing local and district

centres and what areas can be reached in a 5 and 10 minute walk.

Page 7: Cv & Portfolio 2011

Page 7 Portfolio

These images were supporting diagrams and in particular I feel the use of figure ground

images (as seen in the top two) can show instantly to a developer or client the difference a

proposal can make. It immediately highlights wasted space and the impact of new grid like

layouts.

This was a series of supporting images that quickly aimed to show some 3D images of the

site overall and smaller sections from important viewpoints. As well as these images I also

feel it is vital to provide precedents to help convey ideas and how your proposals have

worked in other areas.

The first group piece of work and our group was responsible for drawing the existing city including

security cameras, bins, lamp posts, bus stops etc. A painstaking process but one that helped to

understand Govan better. This map was used throughout the year as it was so comprehensive.

These are 4 out of the 6 boards that were presented as a group showing our ambitions for

the area and proposed neighbourhood and district centres.

Graphical extracts in more detail from the proposals put forward on the future of Govan.

The strategic phase involved working in a group and using our different backgrounds to

propose and remove ideas and ultimately producing an overall vision that we could all

agree on as the best way forward. We were commended for our very well thought out and

realistic proposals along with our graphical and verbal presentations.

My individual block analysis that was added to the other 30 blocks analyzed and then

collectively used to produce our Local Urban Code.
