TREASURE HUNT

The idea behind the urban strategy is to increase the awareness of an archeology museum, which is not located in central Shoreham but in a more disadvantaged, industrial area. In order to achieve this and encourage a discovery process - finding the museum becomes a Treasure Hunt. Several spots are chosen as ‘starting points’ and become informative hubs - they are equipped with a QR code that smartphone users can scan and access information regarding the museum, visit its website or even contact them. Every hub would also provide a metal detector combined with a GPS to be returned in the museum, allowing kids and adults to explore the ground on their way to the museum and have any found objects geographically logged, examined in the museum and, exhibited.

By definition, a found object captures the imagination of the finder and is therefore kept as a keepsake. During my search, what captured my imagination was a set of dominoes in a retro looking wooden box. I started thinking about the game and its rules and the contrast between order and chaos seemed to be a recurrent idea. In addition to this, the fact that one dominoe has to match with the other one in order for the game to carry on was quite interesting. The analogy that immediately sprung in my mind was that of the box representing the museum and the dominoes symbolising the found archeological artefacts. The idea of the stillness of the former, contrasting with the everchanging nature of the latter was rather fascinating. Just like a museum would with artefacts, the box opens up to collect and store the dominoes.

The underground gallery is an archeological dig in itself, the visitor can discover encased soil kept aside during the excavation and brought back in the space, allowing one to create both a metaphorical and direct link to the source of any unearthed archeology object. Visitors can meander through the different caves, their journey being punctuated by the interactive display towers holding an everchanging collection of objects brought in by visitors.

Depending on the level, the tower is cladded with different panels and features enhancing different relationships with the displayed object. Perforated metal sheets frame the view, magnifying glasses are installed in place to allow a closer look at he object.

The lower floor level is left as an empty frame for two reasons, firstly to allow the curators to place the new objects in the towers with ease, and secondly to create a gradual feeling from lower to top level, ranging from accessible objects to ‘precious’ and ‘out of reach’ framed objects behind glass.

Every tower is equipped with a winch and pulley system per floor, each controlling one display case. The visitors get to interact with the objects, make them rise or sink in the hierarchy of the tower or simply adjust it to their eye level.

Cross section through the first floor bridge looking at the auctionned objects being dis-played on a coveyor belt defining the lenght of one auction; through the gold collection kept in the ground floor tubes corridor and several display towers showing the move-ment of the cases inside. The section also shows a cut through the underground projection room, the exhibition paying homage to Shoreham’s old silent film industry and shows the north side of the building, entirely voided for an open cir-culation and easy visual connections, north void also holding the ‘treasure hunt collec-tion’.

Working alongside with the sustainable design department in Brighton University, I got involved in this community project based in Heathfield, East Sussex. In collaboration with the children from the Heathfield Community College and older members of the community, we went back in history, feeding our work to then make predictions about what the surroundings will look like in a 50 years time. We used new technologies to create new visions of the community. Through computer aided design, movie making, drawings and animation ‘virtual’ realities were combined with the technology to combine audio and visual features to display collected documents, photos and oral histories to help to highlight the issues explored by the project.
