CVCC Service-Learning Project Success in Support of Wreaths Across America Cuyahoga Valley Career Center’s Power Equipment Technology and Construction Trades Program joined the cause to ensure that all veterans at Ohio Western Reserve Cemetery are honored. For the past few months, CVCC’s Power Equipment students, with instructor Jerry Koenig leading the way along with help from CVCC’s Construction Trades Program, instructed by Paul Yuravak, worked tirelessly to raise as many wreath sponsorships as possible for the Wreaths Across America organization. CVCC students will be on location at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery to help lay what we hope is 30,000+ wreaths. The goal: to place a live, balsam fir wreath at the headstone of every veteran buried there and spread patriotism while commemorating the ultimate sacrifices they made for our country. based on those clues. The second week, all fifth graders had a career lesson that focused on learning about some unusual careers. During the lesson it was acknowledged that there are thousands of career choices that are constantly changing. Finally, during the two days before Thanksgiving break, each grade participated in a Career Day. Each class was able to hear from 4-6 speakers. Over the two days, there were a total of 57 speakers covering a wide range of occupations. Each presentation lasted 25 minutes, covering topics such as:

• Typical day / duties • Personal skills or talents necessary • Hobbies/interests from youth that may have led into this

career path • Related school subjects (how reading, writing, math, etc.

are utilized) • Technology used • Education/training needed • Likes and dislikes about the occupation • Visuals/games/hands-on materials

Thank you to all the parents and other community members that stepped up to support career awareness with our students!

CVCC Adult Education School of Nursing Lab On Monday, November 19, CVCC’s Adult Education School of Nursing held a very interactive lab with the second-year Adult Licensed Practical Nursing Students. The lab is called the Sensory Deprivation Lab and is a way to have the students experience what a patient might experience who has sensory loss in hearing, sight, feeling in both hands and feet, and confusion. The School of Nursing makes their lab look and feel like an apartment and gives each student three tasks to complete while they have impairments that feel similar to arthritis, bunions, vision changes like cataracts and glaucoma. There is also loud sounds playing in the background, and the area is darkened to change students’ perception of the room. The students complete the lab two people at a time and do tasks such as finding dentures, setting the table, making a bed, putting on a sweater, and finding a cane. The students spend about 10 to 12 minutes each in the lab trying to complete the given tasks.
