01 . Isotropic Space

The competition for Constructive Solutions proposes the in-tervention in building number 8 in Matadero, Madrid, Spain. This is a space where people exchange ideas, converse, think, question themselves and create. So, in compliance with the proposal it requires, a flexible and open solution, easily ma-nageable. The proposal asked the candidates to respect the existing structure, with a minimal change of the facade and coverage. Competitors could intervene in the interior with the objec-tive of obtaining a versatile interior using plasterboard and integrating a housing area, exhibition areas and canteen to be used temporarily by artists.

Convertible spaces are places where people can do dif-ferent activities. There is a machine that organizes the project. This ma-chine, the structural element of the project, is presented as a dynamic and active object, such as a parallelepiped in plasterboard. It is an active element itself, because its position within the plan generates a first level of defini-tion of spaces.

The revitalization of the interior aims to be flexible, however the fixed walls are important to en-sure the orthogonality enabling the organization of the internal spaces which permits the crea-tion of routes for the exhibition space.

The open spaces are versatile and isotropic, but by being occupied by various activ-ities generates disorder which is controlled by the furniture. It is also possible by the ability to pull-out into the storage rooms. The empty plan is offered for people to be able to organize it for all kinds of events. Each floor is a visible existence of a common space for all users. It is a center of ac-tivities where people can exchange knowledge, cooking, talk, sleep, eat, or exhibit their works.

02 . Barcelona Barriers

The city is an organism in permanent development. This leads us to accept and to deal with the city’s problems, by understanding the heterogeneity. Also the diversity of the conflict often leads us to paradoxical readings. The city as a tissue composed of unity in diversity, the new and the old working together without losing identity. At the beginning of any work there are expectations, the need to know and develop a territory, creating familiarities, but at the same time and above all there are questions that are reflected in places, buildings, problems and possibilities. These issues are the beginning of any project, the identifica-tion of problems become an essential task in the equating and new transformation of perspectives.

The permanence of spaces can now equate to the transitional places, taking in the contemporary city and being integrated into a new concept of public space creating a relationship wi-thout confrontation with flows and building more complex systems.

The project explores the idea of centrality in Barcelona and studying the notion of center, the kind of programs, spaces and signs the project determi-nes its own notion of center, and incorporates the qualities characterization and identity.

03 . Waterscapes

Understanding the landscape implies an understanding of its evolution, development, dynamics and the potential for survival associated with natural and cultural values.Located at the estuary of the West River, the harbor of Ma-cau has to face the silting problems and to be dredged fre-quently. This project has been taken as an opportunity to explore less discussed territories and strategically open up topics at the same time. The workshop site were the 3 artificial lakes of Macau, one of them is a water reserve. The task is to generate ideas and strategies for the waterfront of Macau peninsula.

The concept of islands has been involved in the culture of Macau and in order to preserve the “natural” state of archipelago and its con-nections, the new National Library intents to establish clear zoning, creating a micro-island devoted to different functions. More than just a library, which is necessary in Macau, this project includes a botanical retreat, a water treatment plant, and a privileged relationship with the landscape.

04 . Between Banks

Trafaria is one of the parishes of Almada municipality, situa-ted on the left bank of the Tagus River, where there are seve-ral operating environments. The river as a first threshold, as well as the steep hill and even more the grain silo that has created a boundary between the planned buildings and the poor unplanned constructions of the parish. On the riverfront, facing Lisbon, two different atmospheres are presented, the first one, on the east side of the silo, the fishing region. Despite the precariousness, it is consolidated, with collective facilities and another zone, west of the large silo which created a limit to the inhabitants. Therefore, it can be concluded that the riverfront with so much potential is underused, partly because the line between the fishermen’s zone and the silo was not occupied, taking the silo as a limit rather than an integral part of the parish.

The project strategy involves the rehabilitation of the space immediately south to the silo, as a link be-tween the more established part of the parish and the less consolidated, leading locals as well as visitors to take advantage of the next space to silo. As the program proposes a housing module that not only makes the life of the locals better but also gene-rates the coming of others to this place, given the low cost of living in the south bank of the river, with the advantage of proximity to Lisbon. This spot, immediately south of the Silo, is full of empty and unusable spaces, bordered North by the silo. Bordered on the South, the building sit is flanked with new buildings that are obviously facing Avenida 25 de Abril and the hill. On the sides of the chosen plot, is the important entrance to the Silo and on the East side, Alexander Braga Street which marks the end of the area used by fishermen.

In the development of this area, the two uni-ts of accommodation are walled and isolate the outside providing an experience for the-se modules themselves. After crossing these walls, there is a long longitudinal axe that is crossed by other axes that give access to private owners. These houses as the main modules are developed through walls between full and empty spa-ces, turning it to itself, to its spaces as well as to the sky.The main axes that were referred to before, are punctually intersected by others creating wide spaces, where owners can do different kinds of activities on the outside although the residential complex has its own patio, through which housing was developed.

This thesis aims to study and analyse the documentation on the imaginary of Avenida da Liberdade, which has been building its repertoire since the Passeio Publico, granting its due importance over the years to the Avenue’s image, re-presentative of Lisbon’s architecture. This dissertation embraces the challenge of starting a journey anchored in the architects and designers of Passeio Publico, so that the extension of Avenida da Liberdade does not fall into oblivion in the construction process throughout the twentieth century, and in particular, to remember the historic buildings which are full of stories and experiences to tell, as Teatro Condes, Cineteatro Éden, Teatro Tivoli and Cinema Sao Jorge. These buildings were significant sta-ges for plays, poetry and stories that are of undeniable relevance in the (re)construction of scenic imagery of Lisbon’s Avenue.

Aiming to understand the close re-lationship between the existence of images and imaginary, architects and architectural plans, this thesis takes the imaginary as responsible for the existence of the Avenida da Liberdade as we know it.As these buildings were stages of extraordinary events, it motivated interest in finding more images and imaginary characters around them in order to recall memories and en-lighten the evolution and changes that have occurred over time.Hence begins a discussion on con-cepts and issues such as scenogra-phy, which works primarily with creating performance environments but, as in architecture, it is only com-plete at the moment the environ-ment is composed with actions and characters.
