Although our new program year began July 1, 2007, Iwould like to use this opportunity to thank the execu-tive committee for their work in delivering to the sec-tion a successful 2006-2007 program year. We aregrateful to the membership for their interest, support,and participation. I look forward, with your continuedsupport, to an eventful second year of exiting pro-grams and even greater returned value to members. Iwould also like to congratulate returning directors,Bob Hershey and Tom Beutner, and especially con-gratulate and welcome to the executive committee,Rafael Mandujano, Howard Berkof, and SiddiqQidwai, all of whom were successful in the electionsheld earlier this year. I look forward to working withall of you.

Audit ReportAs required by the section bylaws, the audit report,here in the form of the documents transmitted toASME, that is the Unit Operations Budget and theAnnual Financial Report for the section for the July 1,2006 - June 30, 2007 program year, is to be publishedin the next newsletter. The report shows an expendi-ture of $3,750 under Student Section Assistance.$3,200 of this amount was for scholarships awarded tofour area university students featured in our Maynewsletter. A particular financial objective we wouldlike to initiate this year is an annual contribution bythe section for an Endowed Scholarship Fund, whichin time would grow sufficiently to fund the studentscholarships entirely out of the fund’s income.

We are starting early toprepare for the 2008 Engineers Week Family Dayevent in mid-February 2008. Perhaps you possess orhave an idea for an interesting display that canengage, thrill, and or provide hands-on experiencesfor 6-13 year olds, and perhaps older; or you are orknow of industry and other sponsors who can pro-vide give-away material to be provided to visitors toour display - items such as or similar to pens, keychains, fancy and informative brochures, try-at-home ideas/packages, etc. Then again you may havejust the idea for a much-needed professional devel-opment activity having an adequate market for ourarea… we desire and welcome your input and activeparticipation.

October EventYou may have already received our email broadcastof our October event: a presentation by Dr. MichaelReischman on Government Relations at ASME -Mechanisms and Impact. As Vice President - Gov-ernment Relations, Dr. Reischman is in a vantageposition to expound on this important area of ASMEactivity that may not be well known or understoodby many of us. The venue for the meeting is excel-lent, as attendees to our awards banquet this yearwould attest. If you have not already made your res-ervations, you should do so quickly as space is limit-ed.

Program: ASME’s government relations are directed ataffecting the outcome of issues identified by members asimportant to the practice of mechanical engineering in thepublic interest. ASME members and staff use a variety ofprograms and forums for informing, assisting and influenc-ing public policy deliberations. This presentation will out-line government relations activities at ASME and theopportunities for member participation.

Speaker:Michael M. Reischman is Deputy AssistantDirector of the Engineering Directorate, National ScienceFoundation. He has had a long and distinguished career inacademia and government. Dr. Reischman is an ASME Fel-low and a recipient of the Dedicated Service Award. HisPh.D. is from Oklahoma State University.
