Due to the vast quantity of information held within maps and the strong hierarchy that is achieved through typography, colour and weights, both of letters and strokes, the specifications for the borough wide map shall be broken up into typographic and non-typographic (e.g. Route markers, buildings, parks, etc.) aspects.
In the examples the main map will remain the same for both the handheld maps and the hub. Although there is an increase in size from the A2 map to the A1 hub, the size of the map only increases slightly and therefore to fit more comfortably on the plane the size of all features on the map shall increase also. Therefore these features will remain locked in the A2 sized map and just increase slightly in size when applied to the larger medium.

Due to the simple diagrammatic nature of the Cycle Line maps it is quite simple to create specifications that could be applied elsewhere should the scheme be applied to a different city.

As there are no specific ‘on’ or ‘off’ points along the Cycle Lines, the specific stations become somewhat redundant in the mapping. With no stations or station names to fit in the routes can be much more free in terms of their layout on the map. The key locations now become where two routes cross and where the routes pass and are relative to in terms of real-geography. This way someone can plan their route to the exact location and even foresee any potential shortcuts avoiding a busy junction or unnecessary station.

‘O’: SuperscriptSuperscript is to highlight the edition number but not be confused with the word ‘no’.
As each map can only cover a certain area in quality detail, numerous maps will be required to cover all of London. It is important, therefore, to show what other maps are available particularly covering the immediate neighbours of the particular handheld map. Therefore a diagram showing these other maps will appear on all handheld maps to show users the other potential coverage for longer journeys.

The system being based on peoples prior knowledge of the underground system and network of tube lines the colour scheme obviously had to remain the same so it would be instantly recognizable. However being in a different context to the rest of the undergrounds bold colour scheme of dazzling whites and bold blues it became appropriate to soften the colours slightly. This allowed the different Cycle Lines to blend into the over ground, urban environment along with the rest of the Cycle Line colour scheme and infrastructure comfortably.

CYCLE LINE SPECIFICATIONSCYCLE LINE SPECIFICATIONS
Basic Directional SignsFOR THE SIMPLEST ASPECT OF SIGNAGE
1-x
The basic directional signage is the simplest form of signage in the Cycle Line system. Being used only on direct routes their function is quite simply to keep the cyclist on track either on long stretches of a single road or at a very basic turning. Therefore the only information required is the current route demonstrated by the colour of the dots, the direction the route is heading in shown by the letter (E for
Eastbound etc.) and the direction to proceed in shown by the point on the arrow, either left, right or upright for straight on (Demonstrated below). By keeping these signs as small as possible it is hoped to be able to implement this entirely new infrastructure in the street with as little contribution to street clutter as possible. All other directional signage will follow this aim and be kept as minimal as possible.
DirectionFamily: Frutiger LT Std Weight: 65 BoldColour: C=0 Y=0 M=0 K=0
Measurements in x-heightBecause these signs shall be attached to walls and signposts already there, they will inevitably be placed at different heights and distances from the users on the road. To counteract this, their measurements shall be given relative to the
signs x-height in order for them to be easily re-sized depending on their location in order to appear optically the same for cyclists on the road. The dimensions can be used to make the sign proportionally accurate no matter what the situation is.

OvershootDue to the shape of the Route Dots they have been given a slight overshoot beyond the additional ½-x above the Cap height and below the baseline. To fit in with the rest of the typography this has been calculated by comparing the ‘X’ of Frutiger to the ‘O’ of the same height within the previously prescribed guides giving the whole sign a better sense of optical balance.
XOBorder WidthTo keep a balanced feel within the sign the boarder of the sign is of an equal width to the cross of the bold ‘t’ at the size of the typeface being used.
Sometimes a little more information is required from the signage. For instance when off-route any signage pointing towards the nearest route the location where it will be joined will be fairly important to stop someone overshooting or just missing their location. The same goes for when there is an opportunity to shortcut across part of a Line, missing out a busy junction for instance. The location where it will
be re-joined will be fairly important to stop someone overshooting or just missing their location.
Also, all attractions are already well signposted on the roads however there will be some locations where the benefit of travelling by cycle will open new shortcuts or routes, these will be simply demonstrated with the same layout but different information as shown below.
Attraction Signage (Right)Has the same layout structure however round icons will replace the Route Dots and their positioning may be reversed.

Sometimes even more information is required to be displayed on the signage, either for a more complex route description or just because of a long street or area name. In such instances another line will be added to the sign which will be based on the grids of the single-tier ones but with a couple of alterations to keep the sign looking balanced.

½-x SpacingThe directional dots are to act as oversized letters within the typography of the signs. Therefore they are set with the same word spacing, and in order to get the most out of the space on the sign this has been slightly reduced to half the x-height, whilst also allowing for the overshoot.

In addition to the rest of the signage the famous London Street signs will also be adapted to compliment the system. Modified with coloured dots to show when that part of a street is on a Cycle Line they will easily and subtly be adapted again without contributing any further to the ever increasing amount of street furniture cluttering our streets.ORANGE

Because of the issues surrounding the folding of the handheld map, and the implications of them on the grid structure, it had to be tweaked for the back. The column of body text on the right sits much left comfortably with as small a margin as the title on the front. The long stream of ragged right text had little space to breath rather than the title that barely filled its measure allowing it to remain comfortable in such a small space. Therefore the margin has been extended to the width of the co-ordinates edge, twice as wide across to 6 mm.
The small list at the left of the front page was too small and not in a natural form for reading so this affect was somewhat marginalized. On the back however the problem has been avoided by placing another map in the first few columns.

Key & AttractionsIt is worth pointing out that due to the limited space and often elaborate naming of various parts and features of London I have adapted the Oxford house style for overcoming the needed contractions and abbreviations. Only if the name is stopped prematurely is a period used, if it uses the beginning and last letters it is to be omitted.

City of WestminsterWestminster is a London borough occupying much of the central area of London including most of the West End. It is located to the west of and adjoining the ancient City of London, directly to the east of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, and its southern boundary is the River Thames. It is an Inner London borough and was created in 1965 when Greater London was established. At its creation Westminster was awarded city status, which had been previously held by the smaller Metropolitan Borough of Westminster. Aside from a number of large parks and open spaces, the density of the district is high. Many sites thought of as being in London are actually in Westminster, including Buckingham Palace, the Houses of Parliament, and 10 Downing Street. The city is divided into a number of localities including the ancient political district of Westminster around the Palace of Westminster.

Mounted & FreestandingAs there is inevitably going to be a wide range of different locations that the hubs will be placed, there is a need to have both freestanding (Below) and wall mounted (Below Left & Far Left) in case there isn’t a wall on which it can be mounted. In the case of the freestanding hubs they will quite simply extend, in colour, down to the floor in order to keep some continuity and not be over elaborate or require extensive fittings.

Large SignageGRID STRUCTURES
Baseline GridThe baseline is set to the same graduation as the lists of locations as these are the most abundant blocks of text on the sign. In a similar vein, in the header of the sign (Cycle Line, Street and Borough) it is the street that sits comfortably on the same grid with the two sub-headers leaded to sit comfortably around it and the sign itself.
Grid StructureDue to the simple layout of information on this kind of signage beyond the baseline grid it is kept down to just one column with equal margins. All the information is either ranged left or right, and is broken up in a vertical manner so no conflicts are able to occur despite this sample layout.

Frutiger was chosen as Cycle Lines typeface as it fulfilled all of the needed criteria perfectly. From the clarity aspect, for the signage in the street which needs to be read from afar and whilst travelling, a sans-serif was the obvious choice. However beyond this it became apparent that one from the humanist category would be best suited, the more explicit variations on stroke widths emphasising the difference between letters giving increased legibility.
Upon realizing the wide range of
There are specific intricacies within the typeface that were prerequisites for a highly legible transit system typeface.
Il Il g gClear distinctions between certain Caps and lowercases through Cap and ascender heights demonstrated by comparing Frutiger to the similar humanist Gill Sans’ Cap ‘I’ and lower case ‘l’.
Also avoiding the somewhat overly decorative double storey lower case ‘g’ and similar elaborate glyphs. Again, Frutiger on the left and Gill Sans on the right.
collateral supporting the system it also became clear that the required typeface needs to be highly versatile. Frutigers family is large enough to cater the needs of large street signage to the intricacies of cartographic typography with a range reaching from Ultra Black to Light Condensed. This allows the brand to remain legible across all media and sizes working as well as any sans-serif typeface for body text as well as large body type.

IconsFOR USE WITH MAPPING AND SIGNAGE
In order to further aid users understanding of the mapping and signage as series of icons have been developed to highlight key facilities in the city. They are either adapted from already familiar iconography so the ameninities they represent is instantly recognisable but they still fit in with Cycle Lines visual language or they have developed with the use of Frutiger to fit in even more succinctly, most notably in the information ‘i’ which was drawn from an image of Frutiger serif italic.Westminster

Icon Layout (Left)To ensure the icons sit comfortably with the typeface they are layered out with the same leading and tracking as the type and placed at the same size as the capital ‘O’, with its overextension above the caps line and below the baseline to give the circles the same optical weight as the erst of the text.
Icon Design (Below)Familiar icons are placed in Cycle Lines circular container to add to recognizability and keep close to the brand imagery.

The Hubs will act as orientation and information points both on- and off route. As mentioned these will feature at all notable points of interest, tube stations, near extensive bike racks and anywhere else where someone is likely to start or end a journey. The main feature will be the street map, with a radius of a few miles allowing the user to plan any short, off-route sections of journey to an obscure location such as a personal residence. It will also highlight the exact location of any nearby features, offer ideas of areas to go and explore, show near by ‘changes’ or just find ones exact location if slightly lost.
This will be complimented by the large scale map to get the user pointed in the right direction for longer journeys or again locate scienic areas or changes.
As well as mapping the Hubs will offer more localized information. Immediate location information such as exactly where it is, routes its on, postcode (as another point of quick reference). It will also have a brief description of the area and its history, as well as notable local features, quick ‘left-or-right’ directions for immediately nearby attractions so those nearby need not fully dismount and consult the street map.

Print SpecificationsSIGNAGE & HUBS
The signage shall be made using the process of vitreous enamelling. This process of firing colour on to sheet metal is perfect due to its versatility, easy maintenance, and fantastic longevity and resistance to vandalism and graffiti. Graphics can be screen printed onto a sheet of steel before the firing process gives the wide range of colours exceptional colour
Wall SignsAs the process is simply applied to sheets of metal, the sheets can then be used as normal and easily affixed to walls.
The Finish (right)The process results in very attractive bold colouring, highlighting the strength of the typography and imagery as well as a very appealing texture, the strength of which is dependant on the heating and can therefore be adjusted to needs. For this signage however I would suggest selecting a smoother finish with just a hint of the process’ trademark texture in order to just hint at the process used.
Freestanding SignsThe enamelled sheets could also be built into a larger fitting such as a freestanding mini-linth on the side of a road if there is more information than on the previous two signs.
Sign PostsThe sheets could also be attached to preexisting signposts to integrate with other traffic signage.
stability. The metal than be applied throughout the city, being easily affixed to signposts and walls.
This is quite a specialist process but is provided by A J Wells & Sons who have worked with various sectors within TfL and councils all over the country, examples of which is on the left hand side of the page.

CYCLE LINE SPECIFICATIONS
Print SpecificationsHANDHELD MAP
The handheld map shall A2 sized so as not to be too large to hold when folded up and easily to carried when folded up. It needs to be of a slightly heavier weight in order to withstand the repeated folding and unfolding.
Printing ProcessThe map shall be printed with simple process colours. A white spot colour would be good to highlight the details on the icons, however the large increase in price for just a few small dots does not pay off enough to warrant inclusion. The icons shall remain clear enough regardless of this so they shall be left to use the colour of the stock.
It shall be printed using lithography in order to cater for the inevitably large print run for free cross-city maps. This will also be able to best take advantage of the CMYK printing process keeping costs to a reasonable level.
StockThe stock used shall be a 140gsm coated stock in white, because of the small but essential amount of white needed in the designs it would be very expensive to get the extra spot for such a small quantity of ink. Therefore a more reasonable idea would be to print a processed grey background on the white stock to allow the white to come through.
FinishingThe only finishing required beyond cropping down the original size of the supplied stock is the folding down to its smallest size for easy transportation and display.

Print SpecificationsIMPLEMENTATION GUIDE & SPECIFICATIONS
The implementation guide as well as this booklet itself are constructed in the same manner in order to retain a sense of brand continuity.
Print ProcessAgain, the print process of the guides shall be lithography, again using the four colour process with no additional spot colours. This will be a much shorter print run however, the implementation guide being used primarily as a promotional material for those with the power to implement such a scheme, city councils or influential figures for instance. This also defines why, despite the lower print run, that lithography be used over digital printing. In order to convince these figures the much more pleasant finish from using lithography rather than the cheaper digital printing, will in fact pay off sufficiently to warrant using the process.
StockThese guide need be nowhere near as versatile as the maps, having to endure repeated folding, and therefore a lower weighted stock will be perfect. The booklets will be using a 75gsm white for the inside with a thicker stock for the covers. They will be laid out in landscape A4,not only mirroring the style of the handheld map and allowing the layout a little more flexibility when highlighted the diagrammatic aspects of the Cycle Line infrastructure the signage of which is often wider than it is tall, lending itself to the landscape layout.
BindingThe guides being in landscape and not comprising of more than 30 pages rules a large portion of binding methods out straight away. Therefore both booklets shall be ring bound in order to give a clean and stylish finish at little cost.
CoversIn order to support all of the inner pages and binding as well as preventing the booklet form becoming easily damaged, the covers will need to be considerably thicker. It shall therefore be using Canford Cards A1 Azure Blue 300gsm available from Coyler.co.uk, the sheets will be cropped down to A4 before being printed on and finally layered up to two ply, totalling 600gsm.
Both A4, they are the perfect size to discuss both the concepts and more technical aspects of the project without becoming overwhelming in their presentation.
