Welcome to the April issue of Cycling World. It doesn’t seem possible that we are already four months into 2014, but we are and with the sun shining (in the South East at least), the last few weeks has hopefully seen those fair weather riders among us dust down the bike(s), oil the chains, pump the tyres and check the brakes. It’s time to get riding again… We very much hope you enjoyed our March Touring Special, and I have to say it was a pleasure putting it together. This month we are back to normal business, with some great rides in Scotland, Northamptonshire and Devon and Cornwall (the Monkey Boy returns…). As well as the usual assortment of great content. Over the coming issues we have a plethora of other great rides from all over the country, so be sure not to miss them. We would love to fi nd out more from our readers about the expeditions and adventures they get up to on their bikes, so if you have the time to commit to paper and have taken photos whilst on your travels, do please send them in and we will try our best to feature them in future issues. In the meantime, we hope you enjoy this issue and most importantly are making the most of being on two wheels again. All the best,The Cycling World Team

NEWS I APRIL 2014

The Gran Fondo Conwy is a brand new non-competitive cycle sportive set in the heart of North Wales. Taking place on Sunday 27th April 2014 and setting off from Conwy Castle, the Gran Fondo route travels around some of the best climbs, views and roads the counties of Conwy and Denbighshire have to offer. The event has already had over 300 riders sign up and is expected to attract hundreds more!

The ‘Storm the Orme’ time trial or ‘Gwibdaith Y Gogarth’ (as it will be known locally) will give riders of the Gran Fondo Conwy the opportunity to race against the clock and their fellow riders on a complete circuit of the Great Orme. Unlike any other cycle ride on the Great Orme the Gran Fondo Conwy route will give them the chance to complete the circuit in reverse! This is possible because the road on the

Orme will be closed during the morning for this section of the Gran Fondo Conwy!

This time trial will be the only competitive stage of the Gran Fondo Conwy cycle sportive.

The time trial stage was given its fantastic names via an email and social media competition. Event organisers, Always Aim High Events, asked their community of followers to help them name the event in both Welsh and English. After hundreds of fantastic suggestions the company picked ‘Storm the Orme’ and ‘Gwibdaith Y Gogarth’ as the clear winners. These answers were given by Russell Pritchard and Rhys Williams respectively over Facebook. Both winners were given a free entry into the Gran Fondo Conwy along with an Always Aim High Events T-Shirt.

The Gran Fondo Conwy has a choice of 4 routes available ensuring that there is a challenge for cyclists of all abilities. The four

The Milk Race 2014 was offi cially launched in Nottingham city centre today by World and European cycling champion Katie Archibald, and Olympic gold medalist Ed Clancy.

The elite cyclists took to Nottingham’s Old Market Square for a one-off spin master class alongside cycling enthusiasts from across the city.

Both Katie and Ed are confi rmed to ride this year’s Milk Race on 25 May as part of the Madison Boot Out Breast Cancer team and the Rapha Condor JLT team respectively, with several other high profi le cycling teams expected to sign up in the coming weeks.

The event is returning to Nottingham after a hugely successful day in 2013, attended by 60,000 people. Last year was the fi rst Milk

routes are the Mawr (104 miles), Canol (70 miles), Bach (42 miles) and the Gran Fondo Teulu, which is a free family ride (approx. 4 miles) held on closed roads.

The different routes (with the exception of the Gran Fondo Teulu) take riders to a range of wonderful places, including the historical town of Denbigh, over the iconic Llanwrst Bridge and down to the glorious Llyn Brenig as well as travelling along the glorious North Wales coastline with stunning views across the Irish Sea. The Canol and Mawr routes will also take riders from Bylchau to Llanrwst following the same route that Bradley Wiggins, Mark Cavendish et al. cycled on in 2013 as part of the gorgeous Tour of Britain route.

Event Manager, Rob Samuel, is thrilled with how popular the Gran Fondo Conwy has been already and is delighted with the names

TOUR DE MON DATE CHANGE

It has been announced today that the 2014 Tour de Mon - Anglesey cycle sportive has been changed to Sunday 17th August. This change has been made toensure that the sportive includes it’s infamous sprint stage entitled the ‘Flying Mile’. The Flying Mile gives cyclists the opportunity to race against the clock for a perfectly straight, uninterrupted mile along the runway at RAF Valley. After the success of the 2013 event the event organisers, Always Aim High Events, wanted to ensure that riders of the 2014 sportive would get the same incredible experience.

The Tour de Mon sets off from Newry Beach in Holyhead and 2014 is the second time the event will take place. After the incredibly successful first year event in 2013 where over 1000 took part the 2014 event is set to be unmissable.

Regarding the change of date of thesportive Always Aim High Event’s Manager, Rob Samuel, made the following announcement:

“Unfortunately we have had to move the date of the 2014 Tour de Mon Cycle Sportive to Sunday 17th August, two

weeks earlier than originally planned. This is due to circumstances completely

out our control as RAF Valley could no longer accommodate the “Flying Mile” section of the event on 31st August. We think you’ll agree that the “Flying Mile” is a fantastic and unique aspect of the event and therefore the date change has been made to ensure that participants get the best experience possible, whilst having the opportunity to fly down the runway in what has got to be one of the most iconic elements of any sportive in the UK.

We hope you can still join us on the revised date of Sunday 17th August for what is going to be yet another fantastic event.” If you’ve already entered the event you will have already received an email from Always Aim High Events.

If you have any questions or would like more information contact the Always Aim High Events team on

for the time trial on the Orme. He said:“Based on the popularity of the Gran

Fondo Conwy so far we are set to reach the 800 mark, which is a fantastic achievement for a brand new event.

The time trial section is going to be brilliant and we are delighted with the names! The Gran Fondo Conwy routes are truly beautiful and the cyclists are sure to have a great time. The ‘Storm the Orme’ time trial gives the event a competitive element but there is no pressure for people to go full pelt if they don’t want to – they can just sit back and enjoy the incredible views over the Irish Sea!”

Entries to this sportive are selling fast. So if you want to take part in the UK’s most exciting new sportive then enter now through the Gran Fondo Conwy website

Race for 20 years. On launching the 2014 Milk Race, Katie

said: “Being part of the launch has been so much fun! It’s been great to see how excited people are for this year’s event after the success of last year. Off the back of my success at this year’s World Championships, The Milk Race will be a new challenge for me, but it’s one that I’m ready to take on.”

Ed Clancy, who finished third in last year’s men’s Milk Race, added: “Last year’s Milk Race was an amazing experience to be part of. It’s got such a legendary status in the world of cycling so there were high expectations, but it easily surpassed them. It was a great occasion and I’m sure 2014 will be even better.”

Dairy Council chairman Sandy Wilkie said: “It’s fantastic to see outstanding athletes such as Katie and Ed signing up to be part of The Milk Race in 2014. I know that both of them are not just incredible cycling talents, but they’re also big lovers of the ‘white stuff’, so are perfect ambassadors for this iconic event. The Dairy Council and the Milk Marketing Forum are both delighted that the association between milk and sport continues to grow.”

Councillor David Trimble, of Nottingham City Council, said: “We’re so pleased with the amazing reaction The Milk Race has received on the announcement of its return to Nottingham. Everyone in the city is already getting very excited for 25 May – we’re looking forward to an even bigger, better Milk

Race than last year.”The spin class was led by Malcolm Elliott, a

former Milk Race champion, and Tony Doyle MBE who is the race director of the event in its current format. The bikes were donated by H2 Fitness.

The basics; Cycle Canada is a

private company owned by Bud

and Margot. It runs bicycle tours

in Canada. Tour du Canada is a

membership-based, non-profi t corporation.

Its main purpose is to conduct the cross-

Canada ride, Tour du Canada.

Bud founded Tour du Canada in 1987, the

fi rst edition from Vancouver on the Pacifi c

Ocean to St. John’s on the Atlantic, took place

in 1988. It celebrated its 25th year in 2013.

Bud also started the company now known

as Cycle Canada, The Veloforce Corporation

in 1991. Cycle Canada trips fall into two

distinctive categories – expedition-style,

mainly camping, trips and getaway trips with

indoor accommodation.

Common to all is the “coureur de bois

tradition.” They were the early explorers who

canoed through Canada when rivers were the

highways for long-distance trips. Cycling is

just a different way to see this huge country

on a human scale.

Cycle Canada supports the Tour du

Canada. Prospective participants become

members of the club, which has its own

elected directors. The distinctive feature

of Tour du Canada ride is that participants

become part of a travelling community

crossing the country. Turns are taken at

camp chores while Cycle Canada gives

logistical support.

On Cycle Canada expedition-style trips

staff run the galley and do the camp chores.

Margot and Bud met in 1994. Both had

full-time, non-cycling careers, but their hobby

became a business. Until 1995 there had

only been three events. They were Tour du

Canada, the Tour du Canada Time Trial and

what is now the CycleCanada Century Ride.

In 1995 Bud and Margot rode from

Toronto, in Ontario, to Montreal, in Quebec.

Researching what was to be called The”

BiQue” Ride – Bud’s inspiration. The fi rst

group event took place in 1996.

Cyclists rode along the shores of Lake

Ontario and the St. Lawrence River, a gentle

ride on a mixture of quiet roads and shared
