Bike Marathon helps Cancer Fight Richard Bowen completed a 24 hour non-stop static bike ride at South Gower Rugby Club on Saturday August 2nd to help raise money for the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation. Richard and his family’s efforts in recent times have resulted in £35,000 being raised in memory of his sister, actress Lucy Jane Bowen, who died in January 2012 aged just 32, from lung cancer. She gained prominence by starring in a Touch of Frost alongside David Jason. Richard who was brought up in Bishopston but now lives in Cambridgeshire said “We all wanted to celebrate Lucy’s life and help other people with lung cancer, just like Lucy we will never give up our fight against this cancer” Richard completed his epic ride during a Family Fun Day held at the club and many families took the opportunity to enjoy the activities laid on. The Fun Day itself raised just over £1800 for the charity. The Bowen’s would like to thank all the families, friends and relatives that supported the event and made it so successful. Thanks to Natalie-Marie for providing a fitting end to the challenge with some rousing songs that got people up dancing, except Richard who was having a lie down! Finally a massive thanks to all at South Gower Rugby Club for hosting the event and providing brilliant staff who could not have done more to help the event go so smoothly. Armistice Day Service Memorial Stone, Murton Saturday 8 th November 11am Please assemble in Community Centre by 10.30am prior to proceeding to the service. Refreshments will be served In the community centre If you would like to support Richard and the family in their fight against lung cancer simply text TLJB79 £5.00 to 70070 or go to the Virgin Money Giving web site and put in Richard Bowen. Thank - you all for your support and watch this space for the next Bowen challenge. Caswell Bay Erosion Update There have been a number of enquiries referring to the stones that have appeared at the western end of Caswell Bay. Council contractors removed beach material that was blocking access to the main foreshore steps and relocated it to the lower part of the western edge of the bay. Following an independent report it is suggested that natural tidal action was responsible for the loss of sand and not the relocated beach material. Previous monitoring of the sand levels in the Bay indicate that sand levels have lowered thus uncovering larger stones, rocks and material that had been previously covered. The Council is continuing to monitor the situation, and following expert advice will not be removing any material from the beach. Pennard Library Pennard Library is celebrating its 50th Year. The old building has served its community well, but now a much needed rebuild is on the cards. In April, grants were obtained by the LA, working together with the Friends of Pennard Library (FoPL) to refurbish the library. In June, FoPL obtained an agreement in principle for a further grant of £100,000 from the Pennard Community Charity. This means that it is now possible to rebuild the library at no additional cost to the local authority. In September 2014, it is hoped that the existing building will be demolished and that the new Pennard Vernon Watkins Library will open early in 2015. The External Funding Panel met on 14th August to decide whether the rebuild would get the go ahead, unfortunately the LA believe that the build could be achieved before the cut-off date for one of the grants (30/11/14). FoPL are looking into other funding sources to ensure the build goes ahead. The Plough & Harrow, Murton;

Gower’s newest Gastro pub.

The pub is re-opening a gastro-pub, food led with great ale and wines at the heart of the offer but while remaining a pub at heart. “While we are hoping to be known predominately for great food and wine, we have a village to serve and that will always be important to us”. The pub plans to sustain a great range of cask ales and extensive list of wines by the glass as well as house cocktails. And while the food is the exciting part of the plans Nick says he loves the evening regulars and the atmosphere of this great pub. “There is such a warm bunch of people here, everyone comes to enjoy good company and great ale, the pubs the hub, right?” Bookings are now being taken via their website, http://www.ploughandharrow.eu/ The new opening/autumn menu is also now available online. Nick concludes “It’s a really exciting time for us and we hope the village is as excited as we are and soon to be very proud of having one of the best pubs in Wales on its door step, I know for a fact that my team and I can’t wait to welcome everyone back!

Following a major refurbishment, the Plough and Harrow Murton is due to re-open on September 7th with the firm ambition of becoming one of Gower’s best gastro pubs. One of Gower’s oldest public houses is going through its biggest makeover in decades, with the kitchen being doubled in size, a new oak floored restaurant added, and al fresco dining areas. Although they have worked to modernise the look and feel of the pub they have stayed true to its character
