CYPRUS - BASIC HISTORICAL FACTSCYPRUS - BASIC HISTORICAL FACTS• Cyprus has been settled since pre-historic times and virtually every

Mediterranean civilisation has left a cultural footprint on the island.• In 1878 the British (who bought the island from the Ottomans) took control

of Cyprus.• The Cypriot people fought for their freedom during the 1955-1959 EOKA

struggle which resulted in Cyprus being declared an independent state in 1960.

• The period between 1960-1974 was one of instability and intense differences between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots (the two main communities on the island).

• In 1974 attempts by the Greek Junta regime to mount a coup against the Cypriot Archbishop Makarios (the Republic's leader), resulted in a Turkish Military Invasion. The Turks invaded and seized the northern third of the island, forcing 2000,000 Greeks to flee their homes.

• The Turks declared the occupied areas into the “The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus‘” in 1983; although this has not been officially recognised by anyone else.

• Even though Cyprus officially became an EU member state in 2004, 37% of the island still remains under Turkish Occupation, while UN-backed talks continue to take place in search for a peaceful and just solution.

CYPRUS - SOME BASIC INFORMATIONCYPRUS - SOME BASIC INFORMATION• Cyprus's capital is Nicosia (which after Berlin remains the only

divided city in Europe!).• The main language spoken on the island is Greek but almost

everyone can also speak English. • Cyprus has a territory of around 9200 Km2 (this includes both the

occupied and non-occupied areas).• Its population is around 1 million (800000 in the non-occupied

areas and 200000 in the occupied areas).• Cyprus has two airports (Larnaka and Pafos) and one main port

in Limassol. (The Nicosia airport and Famagusta port are under Turkish Occupation since 1974).

• Cyprus adopted the Euro in 2008 which was the successor to the Cyprus Pound.

• Cyprus’s economy is mainly dependent on Tourism and the provision of Services.

State University Entrance Exams and try to obtain a position either at one of the two public Cypriot Universities (The University of Cyprus or the Cyprus University of Technology) or at one of the Greek Universities. Studies at these Universities are free.

3. Alternatively, many Cypriots study in the UK(mainly) and other parts of the world, where they pay fees as EU citizens.
