Representative of the United States Honolulu, Hawai1Dear Sir;

This is a note from one of the Catholic Chaplains with the 8 Inf Division in Germany. It Is being written on behalf of one of our dependents here, a subject of yours: Mrs George Bee, whose permanent address is 1734 Houghailing Rd , Honolulu 17, Hawaii.

The problem is immigration; Mrs Bee’s sister,Lidia Meini, an Italian citizen, made application in March 1954 and seems to be no closer to entrance to the U.S. than then. She is considered 4th class preference and therefore never comes up on the list. She has been living with the Bee's since they cameto Germany and receives some support from them.

The rotation date for Sgt and Mrs Bee is in the Spring, and naturally they would like to bring Lidia with them. Is there anything that you can do to help bring this about? Or, are all doors closed?

Thanks for any help in this matter.Sincerely,

Dear Congressman Inouye:

Although I have been thinking of you, this is the first opportunity I have had to write and congratulate you upon your re-election to the House of Representatives. It was a great victory.

I know that you are as pleased as I am over the election of Senators Kennedy and Johnson. Under their leadership, and with the aid of Democrats like yourself, our country can go ahead with a forward-looking program.

I am in Florida at the moment, and am working hard to raise money to meet the sizeable deficit we incurred during the campaign.

My warmest good wishes to you.

■ ■Inouye Sets Record With 135,425 VotesH O N O L U L U — (AP)— Incumbent Democrat U. S. Rep. Daniel K.

Inouye broke all Hawaii vote-getting records in Tuesday’s election by polling an unofficial total of 135,425. His opponent, Republican Frederick J. Titcomb, got 46,829

votes. Inouye’s margin was nearly 3-1.The popular Nisei war veter-

an held the previous state record for the highest number of votes for a single candidate. He received 111,727 votes last year when he was elected as Hawaii’s first U.S. representative.

It was expected that he would defeat Titcomb by a good margin, but Democrats and Republicans never dreamed that he would snowball such a total.

* * * Inouye pledged himself to

“protect Hawaii’s sugar and pineapple industries” and to “see that the East-West Center becomes an effective center for world peace.”

The Democrat said he would do his “utmost to seek the full appropriation for our college of agriculture.”“I will do whatever I can to

aid our small industries and our small farmers such as the coffee growers.”Inouye said that his own

M y dear M r. Inouye:

Please accept m y w a r m personal congratulations on your victory in the N o v e m b e r 8 elections. The people of your district have spoken and there the debating ends.I think you know that C W A m e m b e r s are largely Democratic. W e have found that to be true in our political opinion polls. W e also have m a n y Republicans. But I a m sure, f r o m past experience, that all C W A m e m b e r s in your area, regardless of personal preference at the polls, will be cooperating with and working with you.

There's a job to be done by all Americans, for all A m e r i c a n s and to that end I know you will devote yourself, as w e also shall be striving to do in the years ahead.

Honorable Daniel K. Inouye United States Representative Room 200 - Capital Investment Bldg.Honolulu, HawaiiDear Dan:

I've been trying to reach you by phone this morning, but no luck. No doubt, you must be taking a well-deserved rest at this writing. However, while victory is still fresh all around, I thought I!d get this letter off to you.

CONGRATULATIONS! for winning by a smashing majority. You and Maggie, with what little energy you have left after a rigorous campaign, must be rejoicing over the outcome. You may be interested to know that many people here were very much impressed by the fact that you had gone out to campaign as vigorously as you did, notwithstanding the common belief that you were a "cinch" to get back in.

Our office also extends to you and Maggie its congratulations and Aloha.

Please let me know if there's anything you want me to do at this end.

Aloha, Francis M. Izumi

Poll Finds Nixon in Lead, but Kennedy Is Said to Gain

By RICHARD J. H. JOHNSTON Special to The New York Times.

HONOLULU, Oct. 29 — The Presidential campaign appears to have made little impression on the voter of Hawaii.Althought them ulti-racial

population here will he voting for the first time in a Presi- dentiai contest, It seems to be generally bored with the sounds and tlie fury from the main-

land in the battle between Sena- tor John F. Kennedy and Vice dent Nixon.

The Republicans among the state’s 190,314 registered voters have had a look at their stand-

ard-bearer, who spent three •s campaign here last August. The Democrats, however,

have seen and heard Mr. Ken- nedy only on television and newsreel film. The Republican workers declare that Mr. Kennedy has been "badly hurt" is failure to appear here. But the Democratic leaders say this is not true.

Democratic ViewThe rank-and-file Democrats feel generally that Mr. Kennedy was well-advised to concentrate on the populous mainland. Ha- waii has only three electoral

of opSamplings of opinion indicatethat Mr. Nixon lost no Republican

votes as a result of his here, but they also indicate he made no inroads into Democratic party loyalty. Arthur L. Woolaway, the Re- .can State chairman, pre- dicted today that "we are going carry the state.” He added Mr. Nixon “has always very close to Hawaii."The "voters are impressed

with his experience and ability,” Mr. Woolaway said. He termed the Nixon-Lodge campaign in the island state "well organized" with "strong labor en,

dorsement.A poll tak

cans here shows preference for

e Republi per cent ixon, 35 nedy and

undecided.Madewas confined

capital city, Honolulu. Robert Craig. Asso- ciates, the poll takers, told a leader it indicated ids throughout the islands.

Democratic campaign — chairman, Herman Lum, said

party voter polls showed about 25 per cent still

the Presidential choice. He said that the race here was

open.”More optimistic was the statement issued by Louis Le-

baron, chairman of the Citizensfor Kennedy and Johnson Committee. He predicted a state-

wide sweep for the Democrats Presidential race and in the single Congressional contest here.In the latter contest the in- cumbent, Democrat, Representative Daniel K. Inouye, a World War II hero of Japanese an- cestry is being opposed by Republican Fred Titcomb. Representative Inouye appears a sure winner in the race. He has been

campaigning heavily throughout the Islands for the Kennedy- Johnson ticket as well as for himself.

Drive Less InHonolulu’s Republican MayorNeil S. Blaisdell, and theRepublican Governor, William F.

Quinn, have been campaigning for the Presidential ticket but

with noticeably les intensity. Nonpartisan observers saythey have noticed a decline insupport for Mr.

Nixon since itshigh point during the Vice Pres- ident’s visit.

Honorable Daniel K. Inouye Member, House of Representatives Congress of the United States % 201 Capital Investment Bldg.Honolulu, Hawaii

Dear Sir:

I am taking this opportunity to congratulate you upon your re-election to the Congress of the United States as the Representative from the State of Hawaii.

I know, and I feel sure all Hawaii do too, that you will continue your splendid work in Congress as you have done in the past session of Congress. I know you will have the interest of Hawaii at heart at all times, and we in the Postal Service appreciate deeply the consideration you have shown to all the employees in the Postal Service.

I understand some veterans of the recent Korean campaign are receiving bonuses from their home States. Since Hawaii has attained statehood, are the veterans from this state eligible for like bonuses as some other states?

Please acknowledge and forward your reply to the above question at your earliest convenience.

Aloha,

Congratulations upon your re-election. I know that the happiness with which we, in the AFL-CIO, noted your overwhelming victory is probably dimmed only by both you and Mrs. Inouye’s equal feeling in this regard.

We have every confidence that you will continue to represent all of the people of the State of Hawaii to the best of your ability and you may rest assured that we are equally confident that you will represent the best interests of the people of the United States in your endeavors in the 87th Congress.

letters in connection with politics, but I cannot resist writing you today to offer my heartiest congratulations on your election*

As you know, the Academy's work is preponderantly in the field of Asian studies, and consequently we work in intimate association with many institutions in Asia. I know that to all my colleagues throughout Asia, the results of this election are as meaningful as they are to all of us in Hawaii. I feel certain too that our pride in being represented by you in the Congress will be reflected in the admiration of people everywhere for the manner in which Hawaii has demonstrated its understanding of the role which the Islands play, not only in national but also in global politics.

The Honorable Daniel K. Inouye Representative-elect 200 Capital Investment Building Honolulu 13, HawaiiDear Representative Inouye:

Please accept my heartiest congratulations for a deserving victory in yesterday's election. Needless to say, Senator Kennedy is extremely pleased with your victory and happy that you have become one of his colleagues.

Being a native son of Hawaii and one who plans to return homewithin a few years, I have been keenly observing the election andyour progress and today share the happiness of your victory and that of the Democratic Party.

For several years, I have been the adopted son of several states and since last December the adopted son of Massachusetts. It has been with a great sense of pride and pleasure to be able to serve the citizens of Massachusetts, but now I would like to employ my experience to work for the good people of Hawaii. It is for this specific reason that I am writing you.

Before joining the staff of Senator Kennedy in December, Iwas employed in the House of Representatives for three years.Although the Houses of Congress are geographically near, their complex operations and procedures are almost radically different. Since becoming a member of Senator Kennedy's staff, I have come to know the intricate operations of the Senate in anticipation of being able to use them to serve the new State of Hawaii.

I am a graduate in Economics from Georgetown College and am at present attending Georgetown Law Center and rank in the upper 15% of my class. During the past four years I have become experienced in operating all the office equipment available to Members of Congress. At some time or other, I have touched on all phases of congressional operation, including correspondence, case work and campaigning. During my stay in the House of Representatives, I had the opportunity to run a Congressman's office during his absence.

Page 166: D A AUDREY W. STRINGFELLOW Congress of the U nited States · NATIONAL COAL ASSOCIATION Coal Building | 1130 Seventeenth Street, Northwest Washington 6, D. C. NAtional 8-4322 TOM PICKETT,

As a member of Senator Kennedy's staff I have worked primarily under the direction of Ted Sorensen and Steve Smith. My work has been mostly in the public relations field.

I sincerely hope that the qualifications mentioned above will merit your consideration for a position on your staff and eventually the opportunity to serve the people of Hawaii. If time permits, I would welcome the opportunity to discuss my qualifications with you personally upon your arrival in Washington.

I will be most happy to furnish you with any additional information or recommendations necessary for your favorable consideration. Please address all correspondence to my home.

Sincerely yours,

Francis A. Wong 2212 Phelps Road Apt. H-3Adelphi, Maryland

Dear Dan,

Unaccustomed as I am to writing to my Congressman, I feel I should congratulate you on being elected by the tremendous vote you marked up.

If you did not know already, I have met with nothing but the utmost satisfaction by people of all political affiliations and variations thereof at your election, from labor leaders to top management. Those who heard your comments upon election were much impressed, also.

It gives me great satisfaction to think of you representing Hawaii in the Congress, knowing that you cannot fail to be a credit to all of us...; even though I do insist that you belong to the wrong party that does not matter nearly so much as the caliber of the man himself.

Congratulations,Sincerely,Joe Budge

My dear M r . Inouye:

As the official representative of The Salvation Army in the State of Hawaii, it affords me untold pleasure to extend the congratulations of this organization in your election to the Congress of the United States as the Representative from Hawaii.

There is no question but what the citizens of this great state believe you are fully qualified for this distinct position of trust and responsibility. You are a man possessing the highest of Christian ideals and principles, a most important qualification for any individual occupying a position of leadership in our national life. You have an enviable record as a statesman and shrewd politician (one versed in the science of government). Your domestic life is untarnished - a very desire- able qualification, when so many homes are afflicted with disturbed family relationships. Finally, you have demonstrated your devotion to our great nation by your deeds of valor on the field of battle. As a fellow veteran I must commend you on your bravery and courage in the face of enemy action.

I want you to know your friends of The Salvation Army will support you with their prayers and best wishes as you assume your office as the first elected Representative of the great State of Hawaii.

God bless you!

Sincerely yours,Eric Newbould

Dear Mr. Inouye:

In the absence of m y son David, allow me to congratulate you on your thumping victory at the General Election polls as our first Representative to the U.S. Congress.Your previous record in the Territorial Legislature and your personal integrity, high caliber and popularity won you this honor. I have never met anybody in the Territory who didn't have great Aloha and regard for you. The very fact of your securing such a large vote speaks for itself.

David had to suddenly go to the mainland two days before the elections but before going he voted as he wanted to vote for you and his other favorite candidates. I am sure he will be glad to hear that you were elected though there was no question about your coming on the top.

You, no doubt, are aware that in the Congress there is one Dr. Saund, a native of India, as a Democrat Representative from California. He is serving a second term. He was here two years ago. I wonder if you met him. I am sure he will be very glad to make friendship with you in Congress.

Dear Mr. Inouye:

M y hearty congratulations on an impressive victory in the recent election. You have a wonderful opportunity to display a brand of statesmanship in the Halls of Congress which will bring prestige and honor to Hawaii. The magnificent culture of the Orient which has blended here in Hawaii with the culture of the Occident has produced a type of citizen. . . which you epitomize. . .which has much to offer to help bring about understanding among the peoples of the world.

If, as I hope and believe you will, you put service before self. . . stand on statesmanship and integrity. . . work for the balanced best interests of the groups which comprise the population of Hawaii and of our country. . .have the courage to say no to groups which would make inordinate demands and seek to exploit the public funds for selfish purposes. . . and consider your office as a sacred public trust, you will bring credit and honor to Hawaii. I am sure that is what all of the citizens here wish for you to do.

Congratulations,
