RUST GRIP®

Patent #5,695,812 Method for Abating Bio-Hazardous Materials Found in Coating Such as Lead Based Paint

A BETTER ALTERNATIVE TO THE TRADITIONAL THREE-COAT SYSTEM

FOR STEEL AND OTHER STRUCTURES

RUST GRIP® was developed in the field to stand up against the harshest environments and has a twelve-year history of excellent performance. RUST GRIP® is a moisture cure polyurethane coating with special additives and resins. It is these additives and resins that separate RUST GRIP® from the thousands of other moisture cure urethanes on the market today. Specifically, what are these advantages? ONE-COAT SYSTEM – RUST GRIP® was designed as a

one-coat system. It serves as both a primer and topcoat. Most urethanes are part of a three coat system and individually don’t have the wicking ability to serve as a primer or the overall strength to serve as a stand-alone coating.

LIMITED SURFACE PREPARATION – RUST GRIP® was designed with special resins and additives that allow it to be applied directly over existing firmly bonded paint or rust without any loss of performance. Urethanes in a three-part system normally require surface preparation of a white metal blast (SSPC SP-5) or a near white metal blast (SSPC SP-10). Since the greatest expense in the coating process comes from surface preparation and the containment of that residue, RUST GRIP® will greatly reduce the overall cost of a project.

ENCAPSULATION – RUST GRIP® is patented (patent # 5,695,812) as an encapsulant of bio-hazardous materials including lead based paints and rust. I know of no other urethane coating that has a similar patent. RUST GRIP® has passed ASTM E1795, which is the EPA test for encapsulation. One of the requirements is that the coating last for twenty years or more. The ability to encapsulate allows RUST GRIP® to go directly over lead based paint without removal or exotic containment. This is a major savings in projects involving lead based paint.

SURFACE TENSILE STRENGTH – After twenty-one days, RUST GRIP® will achieve a surface tensile strength of 6,780 psi and over 12,000 psi when fully cured. Normal urethanes will have a surface tensile strength of between 1,000 and 2,000 psi.

Characteristics: * Silver gray in color * Aluminum metallic base * Moisture-cure polyurethane * Dries to touch in 2 hours * Recoat window: 4 hours at 70ºF and up to 14 days * 50% solid by weight * Currently used to encapsulate lead-based paint * 51.37% solid by volume

Testing Performed: ♦ Patent for encapsulating bio-hazardous materials (asbestos, lead-based paint, and many hazardous

materials) and existing rust surfaces. Patent #5,695,812. Patented 12/09/97. ♦ Performed a window-cycling test on a lead-based wood window and casing, wherein Rust Grip® was

coated over the wooden window and sliding sill. The window was attached to a motorized opener, which opened and closed the window over 20,000 cycles. The coating rubbed against itself during these cycles, which would be the equivalent of opening and closing a window once a day for 54 years. After the test was stopped, a wipe was made of the abrasion surfaces and checked for released lead-based particles. Even after 20,000 cycles of abrasion, the surface of Rust Grip® did not wear down and, no lead-based particles were released into the environment.

♦ ASTM E84-89 Surface Burn Test was performed and Rust Grip® passed the fire test with “0” flame spread and a “5” smoke development.

♦ ASTM E1795 Test was performed on Rust Grip® and was passed. This test outlined a “Standard Specification for a Non-Reinforced Liquid Coating Encapsulation Products for Leaded Paint in Buildings”, Type III, either Interior or Exterior use. This is the EPA Certification test to qualify this coating for encapsulation.

♦ ASTM E1795 Exterior Surface Tensile Strength: Minimum 6,870 ♦ ASTM 3273, 3274 Mildew Resistance: 10=Excellent ♦ ASTM D2486 Scrub Resistance: 2,500 minutes plus=excellent ♦ ASTM 3359 Adhesion Test: 5A=Excellent ♦ ASTM D522 Mandrel Bend Test for flexibility was passed ♦ ASTM D2794 Direct Impact Resistance Test was passed ♦ ASTM D1653 Water Vapor Transmission was passed ♦ Weathering Test (2,000 hours) was passed ♦ Penetration of existing oil-based layers: Rust Grip® penetrated through 18 existing coats of oil-based

paint and could not be removed or lifted from the substrate under the layers ♦ USDA (United States Dept of Agriculture) approval for use in and around food preparation and

service

Huey P. Long Bridge New Orleans, Louisiana

November 2003

A pull test done in February 2005 demonstrated Rust Grip’s® ability to penetrate into the substrate. The result of a pull test on panel not coated with Rust Grip® was 200 psi. Then two pull tests were done on a panel coated with Rust Grip® and the results on one panel was 540 psi and the other panel was 580 psi.
