To cap off the day, we had two students who earned perfect scores, receiving gold medals in their

FIRST GRADE RECEIVES INCUBATOR AND EGG DONATION
The Roy Creek Ramblers 4-H Club
dropped off 78 eggs and a new incubator to
the first graders in Mrs. Dillie’s, Mrs.
Krentz’s and Mrs. Wiersma’s classrooms.
The eggs were put in an incubator. About
April 28 the first grade classrooms should see
these eggs hatch.
The project will teach the kids the life cycle
of the chicken. The first graders cannot
wait until they can touch them, hold them
and hear them chirp in the room. The chicks
will be kept in a heated cardboard box to
keep them warm and they will remain in the
classroom for a week. Thanks again for the
donation!
READASAURUS REX SAYS THANK YOU!
“Readasaurus Rex was cool! It was fun to have him come to my classroom! I especially liked the
books that the big boys and girls read to us. I thought it was great that Readasaurus Rex gave us small
books to keep and to read at home.” First graders Korbyn Dolgner and Ginger Austin’s words sum up
the success of the Readasaurus Rex Reading Program.
Throughout the months of March and April, community volunteers and fifth grade students visited the first
grade classrooms and read their favorite books to the first grade students. Fifth grade students, Meriah
Abendroth, Skylie Campnell, Megan Hunt, Tasha Miller, Keaton Lieske, Bradley Van Abel, and Aly Voight
enjoyed donning the dinosaur costume and playing the part of Readasaurus Rex. The fifth grade helpers
enjoyed reading books to the first graders and answering their interesting questions. Many thanks to the fifth
graders and our community readers for making Readasaurus Rex a success!
WEEK OF THE YOUNG CHILD
Thank you to everyone who helped make the Week of the Young Child a success this year! A special thank
you to the Walmart Foundation for the grant we received through the Local Facility Giving Program. Their
donation helped to make these events happen. We appreciate the community and families for being involved
and supporting our young children. We had a great turn out for both The Man with the Yellow Shoes juggling
performance and the second annual children's festival.

WATERCOLOR DEMONSTRATION
On April 21, Mrs. Nancy Kirst came to Markesan High School to demonstrate her talent in watercolor
painting for the Art Survey I class. She taught students how to lay down a wash of color for a background
using the wet on wet technique and
then described how to add shapes
and more color into a watercolor
painting. Mrs. Kirst showed many
examples of her own paintings and
how she manipulated the paint
controlling it for her final amazing
results. She has painted for almost
30 years and enjoys it for her hobby
at home. Her watercolors are
beautiful paintings that range from
portraits to animals and landscapes.
We appreciate her spending time
and sharing her painting talents
with us.

NEXT YEAR’S VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS
By Sam Mertens, RN
As the end of the year nears, it is time to think into the future. Families
need to pay particular attention if you have a child entering Kindergarten,
6th, 9th, or 12th grade. Wisconsin requires a minimum of immunization
or a written waiver. Now is the time to plan ahead as you have until the
beginning of the next school year to get your child immunized.
Students entering Grades 6 through 12 are required to have a Tdap (the
adolescent combination vaccine for tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis)
within the past five years of entering the grade.
Students entering Grades K through 12 will require a second varicella
(chickenpox) vaccine. Previously, only one varicella vaccine was
required. If your child had a natural case of chicken pox, then the vaccine
is not necessary.
You need to supply the school with the name of the vaccine and the
date (month, day, and year) the vaccine was given. Be sure to keep a
permanent record for yourself. In the future, your child may need to
supply these dates to other schools or employers.
A Student Immunization Record will be sent home in May to the
families who have children in the grades affected by the law. You may
need to double check with your physician or the Immunization Registry to
be sure the missing immunizations have not been given. Please be sure to
not wait until the beginning of school to address this need as area doctor
clinics and the Health Department become very busy with long waits.
If you have questions, please call your doctor, the local Health
Department, or the school nurse, Sam Mertens, RN at 920-398-4112. You
can find additional information about immunization requirements at http://
dhs.wisconsin.gov/immunization/index.htm.
Families can access the Wisconsin Immunization Registry by using the
link found on the school website under the immunization information on
the left side of Mrs. Mertens’ web page. The health information you have
provided the school can be viewed via family access. Please remember
you need to provide the information to the school for it to be in our
records.
SCHOOL PERFORMANCE REPORT ON REQUEST
Each parent or guardian has the right to request a school performance
report annually. You may request a copy of the school performance
report by contacting the district office at (920) 398-4201.
