BOO! Looks like our racing season is almost over! :( Once October is outt a here like a ghost, only the Enduro division will hold races in November. But fun ti mes spent with your D14 buds are being planned as I write this, and they're just around the bend. So be sure to check back next month for some banquet dates that will be coming up in the near future. Ice Racing will also be here before we know it. Haven't tried it? I think this winter just might be the one that gets you out on that ice. Go for it!! If adequate coverage of your division is a bit frighten-ing this month, please ask your division leader, "What's up with the vanishing act?" I'd like to know too! Lastly, there's no "trick" about it, this month's con-tributors a real "treat" to see on the pages each month. On September 14th at Portland Trail Riders one of the nicest guys in D14 motocross and the Vintage MX chairman since 2008 had a very serious crash. Steve Baginski had his throttle stick wide open off of one of the biggest jumps at Portland. In doing so he jumped off of his bike mid air and landed on his feet. The crash resulted in some very serious injuries including both ankles being fractured, broken Tib/Fib in his left leg, dislocated right hip and a fractured pelvis. Three surgeries later he has started to heal and is in good spirits at U of M Medical Center. If all goes as planned his target date to come home from the hospital is October 14th. He still has a very long road to recovery and will not be able to even put weight on his legs for at least three months. It will be even longer before he is able to start working again. Even though Steve does have medical insurance, the multiple surgeries and his lengthy hospital stay will cause him to incur some very large medical bills. We are currently accepting donations to try to help him through these tough times and make it easier for him to just concentrate on his recovery. We have already received an overwhelming amount of support for Steve and we would like to thank everyone who has come forward to help in anyway possible. If anyone would like to make a donation checks can be made out to Steve Baginski and can be mailed to 11142 Dale Ave, Warren MI 48089. Also I, Allan Doneth, will be at the remaining races on the D14 schedule and will be accepting donations on Steve's behalf. Thank you again for all support that has gone out to him and hopefully we will see his smiling face and shiny bald head back at the track soon.

Seems like, only yesterday, I was writing about the seasons beginning. The hopes, the dreams, how the 2014 season would turnout. Each discipline of District 14, Motocross, Flat Track, Hill Climb, Hare Scrambles, Enduro. Each starting a new chapter, a new Beginning. EntEr OCtOBErWith October, the end is here!I hope that each series went well, hopefully we had no major problems. Hopefully no one badly injured. Hopefully fun was had by our member’s. Hopefully profits made by our Club’s and Promoter’s, so they will be willing to do it again next year. As your President, I only had to deal with a couple of issues, nothing serious, and nothing earth shattering. This means that the Divisional Chairs are doing their jobs. Also, the Clubs and Promoters are doing theirs, by running good programs and keeping you. our members happy.

October brings AMA Congress, for those that don’t know, this is when the AMA Congress people you and your clubs elect, to represent your opinions and vote on procedural, equipment and event rules for Off-Road, Road and MX Divisions. Michigan, sports the longest held congressional spot with our own Dick Bigelow, Dick returns to Congress again this year at the young age of 81! Dick has been an AMA congressional representative for District 14 for over 40 years. He has passed his passion for motorcycle racing down to his son’s Kip and Kreg. Kip serving at the AMA level and Kreg as our District MX Chair. The District can never repay the dedication service this family has given to the racing of Michigan!

The District 14 Sanctioning meeting is the first Saturday of December, at the Comfort Inn in Mt. Pleasant. The Sanctioning meeting is where the Clubs and Promoters of the District, come together to forge out the schedules and rule changes for each Division. Trying to work several series dates as not to conflict with the other series, while not conflicting with National Events. A handful at best. The meeting also has the District board elections, where the clubs and promoters elect the President and other officers of the District. All members of the District are welcome to come and participate. It is a time to have your voice heard, you will not be able to vote, but your voice can help a club/promoter decide.

A dream, of former District Member and Lifetime AMA and Lansing Motorcycle Club member John Chad, was to put together an ATV ride from Fredrick area to the Mackinaw Bridge and be able to cross the bridge on ATV’s to the Upper Peninsula. John had the wheels in motion before he passed away recently. Past President and Legislative Asst. Director Dick Ranney, has taken the lead to get it done. Stay tuned as I intend to have the District involved in this great ORV opportunity.

At this time the District has 2500 members, an increase from last year, we are growing and with several event that will be held in October and a couple in November the opportunity to increase these numbers are good. We are doing well! I intend to promote the District at several venues over the winter and spring, to help increase membership! As I have said many times, we are a membership driven organization. Without members we are nothing, without organizers we have no events for the members to participate in, so we all need one another! Riders, club’s and promoters are all in this together! We Are District 14. See ya at the Races!

Round 10 Nati onal Enduro Series, Upland Indiana

(September 14, 2014 )Round 10 of the Nati onal Enduro Series we headed to Matt hews Indiana. Since this was the fi nal round of the series I was sad it was over but ready to move up. I knew I had to do well in order to win the Nati onal championship as I went into the race just behind on points and had had my throw aways. My dad and I were on row 38 and I was excited to ride with some prett y fast guys who were also on our row, Marti n Ryerson and Mike Wakowski. Test one started next to the river and there was a prett y solid glare off of the water. Test one also had lots of fi elds and my litt le 200 didn't really like that. It was sti ll fun but I was worried about possibly seizing it. Test two was were I really started to get warmed up and feel good. The test ended with a fun ravine that had rocks all over the place and a nice hill up to the check. Test three was awesome and had nice fl owing trails and cold litt le rivers that we had to cross. I ended up passing one of the riders on our row when he missed a turn. The end of the test had tons of big logs and I crashed on one due to a silly mistake. Test four was fun and had some of the trail we rode for the family enduro last year. Aft er a quick gas stop I was ready to head into the fi nal test of the season. The last test was prett y calm except for a Creek crossing at the very end. I looked at the main line and decided that was a bad idea so I went down the creek and launched up a almost verti cal creek bank to fi nish out the test. As soon as I fi nished I went up to the NEPG tent and looked at the scores to see how I was doing, to fi nd they weren't all up yet. I hadn't felt like I was riding that fast. Some friends told me they thought I would win the race which made me happy because that would seal the championship. I ended up winning B200 by 11 minutes and got 4th overall B. On an even bett er note I won the 2014 B 200 Nati onal Championship. I want to thank every one who supported me and helped me reach my goal. I really want to thank my Mom and Dad for driving me to all the races, and God for keeping safe throughout the season. I also want to thank Bob McCumby from Safety First Equipment for helping get me and my family to the races. Thank you to all my sponsors and I hope to conti nue receiving your support next year and help me reach bigger and bett er things. THE CHRONICLES OF DICK RANNEYstories by Dick Ranney

I have had a good life in motorsports, from a kid in high school with a motorcycle, doing what I could to create a bad image for our sport. Being fi rst in the number of times summoned, to the principal's offi ce, horseplay and poor grades were always on his agenda. Must admit, I rightly earned at least my fair share of detention. I was pretty good at debate and earned another trip to the offi ce because I refused to be part of the debate team. That was for the kids on the other side of the tracks. Little did I know, some of the most precious times of my life, would be spent debating issues for the advancement of motorized recreation. The following are a few stories I can still remember like yesterday. It was a mission given to me by my mentors, to do what I could do and get help in doing things, for the advancement of motorsports. I am sharing with you some of the highs and lows of being an activist for our sports, let me challenge you to continue the mission. Enjoy the ride!

SOME OF THE BEST OF TIMES

While in high school in the late 50’s, more and more purchased motorcycles. BSA, Matchless and Triumph were the most popular with a scattering of two strokes and of course the Harley 125cc Hummer and the 883 Sportster. By today’s standards, they were all beastly things, heavy, some weighing in over 400# and not a whole lot for horsepower.

Was a good time to start a local club, while a senior in high school, I simply got post cards and sent one to every person I knew who rode a motorcycle. We ended up with 17-18 members, most rode competition, be it scrambles, ice race, hillclimb or enduro’s which were big at the time.

We had a ton of fun, most had families, we all met at the races together, had a sizeable fi rst aid kit made up to patch the wounded. We put on a few events annually, one ice race, many as three scrambles and as a club, we had a summer picnic for the families, a turkey run in the fall, again for the families. Along with the various racing schedules of the club members, we were a pretty active bunch of motorcyclist.

As with any club, there is a small handful who do the work, the rest cop out except on an event day and they have all the answers. So what, it was a ton of fun and no different than any other segment of our society.

The networking of the club got us hooked up with the local Sportsman’s Club, we ran a Scrambles for the fi rst event on their property. Went well, nice crowd, good entries and a tidy profi t for both groups.

The next year someone discovered the old township grader sitting on a farm and it was given to the club. We refurbished the antique and built a nice TT Scrambles course on the Sportsman’s Club property. Was a nice course and the word got out fast and the second event, we topped over 100 entries. The third event, we ran against Lansing

MC some 75 miles away and we both got near 120 entries. Perhaps a record for the time in the number of riders entered on a single Sunday in Michigan, other than Jack Pine. We were on a roll and the money was piling up. The club even gave out a scholarship we had so much money.

Crash! The neighbors were kicking up a fuss and hired one of the best attorneys in the county, the zoning papers issued by the township could not be found. End of the track, end of the club, last I knew, the old grader was still doing its thing some 40 years later at the Polka Dots track in Midland. The checkbook was emptied on a trip to Cedar Point by the club members.

If I had my life to live over again, I would make darn sure I belonged to a club, a club is the core of any segment of our sport. It is a good place for a young fellow to get some guidance in life, might say, help them grow up. A real value is the networking with the club members. There is somebody there who knows what you don’t and a good place to fi nd out how to do things, paint the house, fi x the furnace, put a roof on, fi x not only your ride, but the family vehicle too.

If there is not one in your area, start one! AMA, AATVA, NOHVCC all have good information available. Simpler, join one nearby, they are always looking for new members. Check out AMA D14 and CCC websites for the nearest active club. If you’re an ATV person, more clubs in the Upper than the Lower, but they are there, do a little searching on line and possibly your local dealer can point you in the right direction.

Some of the greatest real value to belonging to a club, is to learn the ropes of the inner workings of our sport. Who is against us, what legislation deserves a letter from you, and real gratifying, is to be a part of a team that hosted a good event and you get some Thank You’s by those leaving, or better yet, to get a nice letter from an happy participant and have it read at a club meeting.

What a season we’ve had in Dis-trict 14 – with

more enduros, hare scram-bles, and FES events than you can shake a stick at, there’s hardly been a weekend since early April where I didn’t have knobbies in the dirt.

That being said, one such weekend presented itself recently. Rather than load-ing up the F150 and heading up north to the familiar set-ting of the Michigan woods, I gathered up the street riding gear and headed down to the sample the new iron at the In-dian Motorcycle Demo ride in Toledo, Ohio.

All that was required to partici-pate in the demo ride was a motorcycle endorsement and a helmet, and even at that the Indian demo team had a table of reasonably decent headwear to choose from if that wasn’t part of your riding attire. Having experience with big streetbikes was also recom-mended, and for good reason – nobody wanted to see one of the fifteen or so Chiefs, Chieftains, Roadmasters, or Scouts thrown down the road.

A brief course outline and safety briefing was held before each group departed on the 20 minute loop that made up the demo, and riders could cycle through the line-up as often as they wished. There was a little bit of company history thrown in as well – not about the “old Indian” in its various guises, but about Polaris Industries, and how per-fectly suited it is as a manufacturing and financial juggernaut to reintroduce Indian to the American and worldwide motorcycling markets. The message was that this time Indian coming back was a really big deal, and judging by the reception of the assembled crowd, I’d have to say they nailed it.

Having spent a couple years at Excelsior-Henderson and S&S Cycle during the heyday of the American motorcycle renaissance, I’ve got more than a passing interest in the variety of hardware and brands that have attempted to challenge the slumbering giant known as Harley-Davidson. Without a doubt Victory Motorcycles had come closest to

establishing itself as an alternative to the Milwaukee iron, but that was before parent company Polaris Industries resurrected the world-renowned Indian Motorcycle brand. In the span of a couple short years, Indian Motorcycle has created a sensation that has animated the motorcycling press, which intimated that the bar-and-shield brand was under serious attack. The weapons wielded in the assault are the thundering Chief line-up and the svelte new Scout.

My mount for the first loop was the massive 111 cubic-inch, air-cooled V-twin Chieftain. Being just a little bit of a purist I turned off the stereo and tried to ignore the cruise con-trol and tire-pressure monitoring display while firing up the engine with a keyless push-button start. There was a remarkable lack of vibration from the idling motor, but even in 60 degree weather the rear headpipe quickly became uncomfortably warm near my right leg. If there was anything owning a similarly-sized Yamaha Royal Star had taught me it was the value of a good clutch and transmission at parking lot speed. Dropping the Chieftain into gear suggested that whoever developed the hardware on the Indian was on top of their game. There was a disappointing lack of a heel-shifter, but after-ride chatter indicated that the generous accessory catalogue had at least one to choose from.

There is very little sensation of torque when blipping the throttle in neutral, and easing out the buttery-smooth clutch re-sulted in a confident but not aggressive launch. The sheer size of the bike came back into focus when I had to turn the long bars to lock at walking speed, but once underway it never once felt like its fully-fuelled 848 pounds. The torque that seemed absent at idle was every-present and willing to thrust the Chieftain down the road and thrust it did, with a satisfying but not unpleasantly loud exhaust note to enhance to ride. Vibration was evident but very well managed, and the bike’s rolling-feel and overall handling were ex-cellent. Strong front brakes easily hauled the big bike down from speed, which was good because the rear brake pedal made it hard to modulate the rear. The adjust-able screen height modified the airflow over the windshield, but the choice of looking fully through the windscreen or merely just through the top of it made me wish I had chosen the Vintage or Classic to ride. Nevertheless riders looking for a bike to replace their Road King should have no problem falling in love with at least one of the big Indians.

Comparing the Scout I rode next to the Chieftain would be like pitting a 105 two-stroke screamer against 525 EXC. While the new Scout shares the Indian Motorcy-cle name with its larger family members, it is everything the big bikes are not.

Thin where the big bikes were girthy and h a r d - e d g e d where they were rounded, the new Scout represents a fresh interpre-tation of what a sporty Ameri-can bike should be. Trundling out of the stag-ing area I was at a loss as to what to do with my legs – the hand-somely crafted leather saddle is so low to the

ground that even at 5’11” I towered over the bike. Where the Chieftain’s bigger en-gine and driveline were perfectly smooth at almost every rpm, the Scout’s transmis-

sion exhibited a slight snatch when revs dropped too low. All that changed when the throttle was opened. The Scout’s liq-uid-cooled V-twin engine revved quickly, launching the bike down the road in gear after gear -the bike makes you feel like you’re going a million miles an hour, and that’s guaranteed to put a smile on your face.

Despite being nearly 10 inches shorter than the Chieftain, the Scout felt like it was on rails, its average wheelbase being exaggerated by the 25.3 inch seat height. Also exaggerated was the windblast – the exceptionally low height meant that the headlamp did nothing to direct the wind over the rider. The grips were harder than expected, the mirrors largely useless, and some of the hardware around the swing-arm and rear shocks looked a little cut-rate, but those things are easily remedied. The distinctive lines and memorable per-formance of the Scout’s engine, combined with the edgy yet classic styling of the chassis signal that Indian is serious in its attempts to establish itself as a player in the performance cruiser segment of the market. Nothing Harley currently has in its line-up comes close, and the same might be said for many other brands as well.

If you get the impression that I liked the new bikes from the latest iteration of Indi-an Motorcycle you are absolutely right. If

you have even a passing in-terest in street bikes, you owe it to yourself to check them out.

family fuedTwo of Beta's Best Go Head to Head

A couple years ago comparing a Beta 2 stroke to the Italian 4 strokes would have been like talking about distant cous-ins. Sure they shared body work starti ng in 2013 – the fi rst year of the pre-mix powered bikes – but the resemblance started to drop off from there. The thumpers were fast for sure, but they craved a straight line more than ti ght turns, and they had appreciably more heft than the 2 strokes. Fast forward to the fall of 2014 and the comparison of the recently released 350 Factory to a well-sorted 2015-spec

250 two-stroke is more like judging the diff erence between fraternal twins. The 350 was fi tt ed with all manner of fancy anodized and billet bits, but most importantly it sported the very good Marzocchi 48mm PFP-adjustable forks and a brand-new engine. The last “lit-tle” thumper to leave the Italian factory without fuel injecti on, the 350 boasted a quick-revving yet broad powerband fed by a Keihin FCR carb. The 250 was breath-ing out of an FMF Factory fatt y pipe and shortened silencer and featured the 2015 power-valve hardware, while the front

end was graced by KYB SSS forks adapted specifi cally for Michigan woods racing. The fall hare scramble at the Batt le Creek Motorcycle Club grounds provided the perfect opportunity to test the bikes back-to-back in race conditi ons. The 250 was the obvious choice to be fi rst to the trail, because the bike is a holeshot mon-ster and it’s the one that I’ve been racing for the last two seasons. Although the course was essenti ally the Nati onal trail run in reverse, I sti ll wanted to get ac-quainted with it on a bike that I am very familiar with. An 8 mile lap meant my

race would be 6 laps long, but instead of stopping halfway through to take on gas I would swap bikes instead and fi nish the fi nal three laps on the four-stroke. Two-strokes are great bikes in dead-engine start conditi ons, especially when the jetti ng is dialed in. Despite the avail-ability of e-start, I chose to kick the 250 to life on the start and was rewarded with a clean lead heading into the fi rst turn. We had completed the enti re moto porti on of the track before points-leader Mike Gamble was close enough to at-tempt an outside pass on his YZ450F, but

nevertheless the agile handling and quick power of the 250 allowed me to hold off his att ack and lead into and through the fi rst woods secti on … right unti l we got to the enduro cross secti on. The 40+ B class is populated by riders of reasonable ability, but the consensus is generally that work on Monday takes precedence over whatever glory could accrue from doing the arti fi cial obsta-cles. Moreover, the energy that would be expended in a possible crash could be bett er spent elsewhere on the course, so when we reached the enduro cross secti on I was confi dent the other riders would follow me in. Those of you that raced the event will remember that the arrows for the bypass angled to the left , so that’s the directi on I went, only to fi nd myself mired in downed logs and weeds. Had the arrows indicated that the actual course went right immediately aft er the sign before heading left , I may have led through the bypass instead of watching the second and third place riders pass by while I extricated my bike from the un-derbrush. Back on track, the responsive power and fl ickable nature of the Beta 250 let me keep a decent race pace, with forward progress interrupted by the freight trains of younger/faster/2hr riders coming by. The fi rst lap ended in sight of second placed Gamble, and as usual throughout the season, the gap started to increase into the second and third laps. The arm pump and hand numbness that seems to rear its ugly head in most races had subsided by the ti me the half-way point way reached, and I was ready to mount a charge on the 350. I can’t think of anyone that chooses to kick a 4 stroke when other opti ons ex-ist, and I’m no diff erent. As I pulled the thumper from the stand I pulled on the choke, thumbed the magic butt on, and gave the bike a quick warm up. Up to temp and on course, “we” got down to the business at hand – that being making a break for the front of the class. The rolling feel that I praised in the initi al review of the bike in the September paper was even more of an asset travers-ing the emerging roots and increasingly choppy trail. Plush isn’t the right word, but the thumper seemed impervious to the trail hack that characterized the ter-rain. While defi nitely not as snappy or lithe as the two-stroke, the 350 seemed to roll over the trail with an ease that was missing while on the 250. Increased engine braking and actual poundage contributed to a heavier feel than on the 250, but the bike tracked well, al-

lowing slightly diff erent line opti ons and an overall smoother ride in the woods. Dropping the new six-spring clutch with thrott le applied led to instant thrust but seemingly no wheelspin, while chopping the thrott le caused signifi cant weight transfer onto my hands and wrists unti l I learned to roll the thrott le off or simply keep the volume turned up through cor-ners. Out on the moto track, the breadth of the 350’s power and planted nature of the chassis had me doing my best Anto-nio Cairoli imitati on. As the laps rolled on and my confi dence in the bike grew, so did my pace. Passing riders on the trail became a welcome necessity, and the horn that is standard on the Beta’s came in very handy out in the woods when a friendly call failed to open a passing op-portunity. From being just over 10 minutes down on the class leader the lap aft er making the swap, I was able to close the gap to just under 7 minutes at the fi nish, and more importantly I trimmed almost 5 minutes off the gap to second place in the last two laps. Part of that may be att ributed to the departure of the two-hour riders from the course, but that could have simply off set the combinati on of familiarity with the course and dete-riorati on of the trail, and everybody in the class dealt with the same thing. With-out the ti me taken to switch bikes, I may have been able to pass back into second place. At the end of the day - not count-ing out-laps – my average lap ti mes were 2:17 faster on the four-stroke that I just started riding than the two-stroke I’ve been riding for two years! So what’s it all mean? Clearly, on this parti cular trail on this parti cular day, the 350 was a signifi cant advantage. It wasn’t as nimble or as fun feeling as the 250, and it was defi nitely heavier, but lap ti mes don’t lie. Every lap on the four-stroke was faster than my best on the two-stroke. Does that mean that you should sell your two-stroke and join the valve-and cam set? Not necessarily. The four-stroke has a diff erent feel that may not appeal to all riders, and they cost more to purchase if not necessarily more to maintain. You trade off the ability to ef-fortlessly change lines and loft the front wheel over obstacles for a more planted feel and the ability to pull longer through a parti cular gear. The larger the motor the more inerti a present, so even if you gain a stronger engine, the four-strokes tend to wear you out more. So what’s the answer? I’m not sure about you, but I want one of each!

179 total entries. That sums up this event quite easily. Numbers never lie and they speak volumes about the quality of the event. Batt le Creek is fortunate in that they have a great locati on and dedicated club members. Other tracks have great venues but are too distant to get these numbers. The weather was a bit warm (nice change though) which enti ced the more ti mid fair-weather types.

Most riders were sti ll whining about the slime-fest back in July. I didn’t think it was all that bad. At any rate, the September 28 event was a track of perfecti on. The soil was moist in the woods yet fi rm enough to support the endless knobbies ripping through.

The club graced us with a new moto track that was an absolute blast. More importantly, it was safe as well as fun. And last and this is a big deal, they plowed over the enti re single track trail to eliminate the rut from their Nati onal. I have no idea how many man-hours this took but I know it’s a lot. This club has earned my respect 40 ti mes over.

The track was reverse of their Nati onal but with a few new twists. That pine secti on in the southeast corner had a short secti on of new trail that got carved out deep but sti ll rideable. The long uphill leading into that secti on was scary fast. Too fast for this guy with the strobe eff ect of sunlight and shadows wreaking havoc on my weak eyeballs.

The rockpile somehow got easier for me this ti me. I have always been inti midated by this pile of case crushing, high dollar repair, bone snapping evilness. This ti me I rode the longest line through it which proved to be the smoothest. It was off -center to the right a bit. The short line on the left was rougher with bigger rocks. The center line only had one big rock placed near the end. Once I learned to dodge that sucker the rocks became

rather easy. The Euro secti on got easier as well. Aft er years of ti re slamming abuse, those uphill logs gave out. That provided me the ulti mate Nancy-boy path through re-quiring very litt le skill and allowing my short legs to remain on the pegs.

My roots are actually woods riding. I started out riding enduros (a very long ti me ago). However, I looked forward to riding the new moto track on every lap. They built a cool rhythm secti on leading to their now infamous 110’ ski jump. A small double exiti ng a corner forced me to maintain good corner speed, I love those types of small technical jumps. The big table top before scoring (not the one immediately in front of scoring) was my launch pad into orbit. In years past I have come close to downsiding it but this day I fl at-landed it. Once I learned the correct speed it became a game changer for me. When you ti me this type of jump correctly and land on the down slope it becomes so eff ortless. Someti mes more thrott le is the answer but I am never sure of the questi on.

If your last name was Mapes you had a good day. This dynasty of riders all won their classes. It started with Luke in the mini program, Joe (the dad) taking top spot in the senior class, and Jordan taking the overall. Great riders and a great family. I also want to acknowledge another great young rider, Mr Joe McNeil. This young gun took the 2 hour OA. He has been on a rip this year. What impresses me most about Joe is that he is doing it on his own. He rides once a week usually solo. His dad is his mechanic but does not ride so he can’t off er much help in the skills department. Joe has literally self-taught himself to be one of our elite riders. Well done.

The club off ered an open ride the day before. It was not well att ended but it was su-preme fun. It consisted mostly of club members and these guys can ride. I will always make it a point to go to these open rides. It helps build your confi dence and allows you to tune your bike.

Here is my fi nal thought. Never wish anyone “Good Luck” Reason- luck is a concept cre-ated by the weak to explain their failures.
