Hello Hippos!

The 2013-2014 term is quickly coming to an end! A lot has happened in this past year

and we have achieved a lot. I have a simple update for this newsletter: I would like to

thank you for helping us surpass not our first, but our second fundraising goal of

$5,555! We have yet to reach our service goal of 11,121 hours, but we are almost

there – make sure you finish strong like the powerful Hippos you are!

One more month.

Nicklas Lee

Division 21 Lieutenant Governor

Hey Hippos,

Do you hear the sound of my heart cracking because there’s only one other newsletter left? But good

news is that DCON is coming up! I hope all you Hippos have prepared your chants and costumes for

the event! My term is coming to an end and I’m excited to see who will take my place. For now, have a

nature themed newsletter.

Stay Frosty,

Estella Hoang

Jumpstart Your Heart was held on Saturday February 15, 2014 at Mission Bay. It was the day after Valen-

tine’s Day so it was perfect to come to an event that benefits the Children’s Heart Foundation. We ar-

rived at 6:50AM; the first volunteer job we encountered was stuffing bags with goodies. It was a slow

process doing one bag at a time because there were so many items to be put in a bag. Luckily we were

smart enough to stuff 3 to 4 bags at the same time versus only doing one bag. Frank and I volunteered

to do a different task, which was to work at the check in booth to hand out t-shirts and sock sizes. Frank

and I were too into this job because we turned it into a competition to see who can hand the racers their

t-shirt and sock first. It brought out our competiveness and excitement for the day. Meanwhile, the oth-

er groups of volunteers were cheering on for the runners as they pass the finish line. Division 21 month-

ly DCM was held after the walk. The first thing we did was doing an icebreaker to get to know each oth-

er. It was a great experience.

The Jumpstart Your Heart Event was perfect for the four day weekend. With Valentine's

Day just the day before, Key Clubbers were ready to show their love... for service! Upon arrival

at Mission Bay Park, members were asked to fill goodie bags for the participants of the race. An

assembly line was made, and members moved smoothly to fill the bags efficiently. After boxes

and boxes of goodies bags were filled, volunteers were directed to form groups and go to vari-

ous areas of the course to direct and cheer as runners passed by. Participants appreciated the

enthusiasm and encouragement from all of the Key Clubbers! After the race was finished, we

were instructed to remove barricades, load equipment onto trucks and were sent on our way!

The February Divisional Council Meeting was immediately afterwards! Nick started off

the DCM with an ice breaker, the Human Knot. It was a really fun activity that practiced team

work and leadership. Also during the DCM, Liza Le (Patrick Henry) was recognized as Member of

the Month, and Nina Nguyen was recognized as Officer of the Month! Nick and Kai then pro-

ceeded to talk about upcoming deadlines for scholarships and distinguished awards. Hopefully

Division 21 receives many at District Convention!

The San Diego Rescue Mission was something Serra has never experienced before. We helped serve meals to the

unfortunate and it was a fun experience. Before we actual served meals we had to put on clothes such as aprons and

hairnets which was funny to see eachother in. Once Lunch time actually began we were introduced to all the people

who were there to eat. We were all surprised when everyone started clapping for us and also how thankful they were

for us being there. Serra High School is also the only school to ever help cleanup after the meals in San Diego Rescue

Mission history. We were very touched by the fact on how dedicated these men were to all the homeless and in need.

We are definitely planning to go more frequenctly to the San Diego Rescue Mission because we had a great experi-

ence feeding the needy.
