A Word from Our L T G

I hope everyone is enjoying the final waves of their summer vacation by relaxing and

taking time to prepare for the upcoming school year. As I reflect on my summer, I recall both

ups and downs, but generally this summer has been great. From International Convention in

Orlando, Florida, to riding the waves of Summer Board in Rancho Cucamonga, California, I

have many new pieces of information to present at Division Council Meetings, as well other

resources that can be emailed to you. At the August DCM, I presented information on Member

Recruitment, and I hope you all take that information to use as we approach your first General

Meetings and the club rush. Key Club International has reached a record high of 265,456

members, and it is only expected to keep growing. Each and every one of us makes up that

number, and you can help contribute to that growth by recruiting members into our wonderful

Key Club Ohana. Division 28 West is the largest division in Las Vegas, so let’s keep on growing

and keep utilizing the potential of our members to increase our output of wonderful service for

our communities. Together, we can help our district reach its goal of 46,000 members, 800,000

service hours, and $154,000 raised for Pediatric Trauma Program (PTP); which altogether gives us

one million reasons to serve. As the school year approaches, remember to stay motivated and

keep on riding the waves. If you happen to fall off your surfboard – get back up and keep on

riding. See you all at the September DCM, Seamonkeys!

Can you believe that summer is over already? Time certainly swam by,

and I haven’t even started my AP homework yet! I still have to get my

sleeping back on schedule. No more sleeping at 3am every night!

Anyways, there is SO much to look forward to this Key Club year,

including DCMs, RTC, Fall Rally, club dues, and most certainly DCON! I

have included information about these events further into the newsletter.

Thank you to all who have been submitting articles and visuals! Since the

school year is started and more events will be coming up, I hope to be

expecting even more submissions! All of your hard work is much

appreciated and I will do my best to continue serving you all. See you

next month!

Business companies showcased

what seemed to be millions of

furniture in the three colossal towers

of the World Market Center. With

companies having selected items for

donation, the Habitat for Humanity

was there to pick them up. Fifty

percent of the donations are to be

sold with proceeds to the

organization and the other half to be

donated to unfortunate families in

need of furniture. With other adult

volunteers wearing bright green

shirts, we took large clothes bins on

wheels and dollies around all the

buildings to look for furniture with

"Habitat for Humanity" signs outside

of businesses' office space. We then

carefully transported back to Habitat

for Humanity's office space. With a

day full of walks around the towers,

waits for huge freight elevators, and

transporting furniture, I am joyous to

know such furniture are going to an

amazing cause and we volunteers

made it happen.

During the end of a summer break, kids prepare themselves for the

new school year by buying school supplies. For some kids, it is an

exciting unfortunately moment. For others, it may be depressing

because they cannot afford them. But this year, Aid For Aids of

Nevada, also known as AFAN, took the challenge of spreading the

word out. Parents of about 50 kids have reached out this summer

saying how worried they were of not being able to set up their kids

for success. A friend of mine works for AFAN and was able to reach

out to me and I helped by doing the next step of taking it further to

my key club peers. My club and I were able to each buy a bunch

of school supplies to help. We were informed to turn in all

donations of school supplies by August 3, 2012. Aid For Aids of

Nevada received many employers from Kohls to help assemble

the backpacks on August 11th. AFAN hoped to reach their goal of

being able to provide 50 school supply filled backpacks. Instead,

they ended up with 80 backpacks and were more than happy to

provide for other kids in need of school supplies. My club and I

were filled with joy, knowing we were able to help. Lots of kids

have been set up for success this school year!

“Leadership is a relational ethical process

that brings people together for success.”

Double Shot Espresso

On August 5th Double Shot of Espresso held their first informational meeting to

discuss the beginning of their new organization. What DSE would do is work with

clubs such as Key Club, NHS, Student Council, etc. to provide them with

opportunities to volunteer at places that could possibly help them develop work

skills or even find employment. They are also a new form of social media that

focuses only on the positive form of online posting. They have a website that they

are developing that has many of the same aspects of the most popular social

media networks, but without the worries of being put down by anybody through

post or comments. The name Double Shot of Espresso comes from the

invigorating, enlightening feeling people get when they drink a double shot and

they believe that with their focus on positivity and uplifting people’s spirits that it

will provide the same feeling. This is definitely a revolutionary way to approach

social media that I hope spreads throughout Nevada and then the U.S. I am

looking forward to how this will turn out and I really hope that the people who

need it can find this organization and take what they need from it to grow.

Marcus Castile Vice President, Northwest CTA

Recently we had an event at Spring Valley High School. We teamed up with Student

Council and NHS to prepare students for the upcoming school year. Our job was to

prep administration papers to mail out. We also helped organize papers, put them in

envelopes, and seal envelopes. There is an upcoming event called ANIMEGACON

located at the Las Vegas Hilton. It will be a five day event, and our previous Vice

President Celina Oh helped us out with this event. Thank you Celina!! Two more weeks

until school starts. At our freshman orientation we will be prompting Key Club. We are

hoping to recruit as many members as possible, the more the merrier. Spreading the

word about Key Club to other school mates/friends will help our club when school starts,

during school, and summer. One of Spring Valley Key Club’s goal is to keep as many

members as possible. We do not want our members to dwell after Fall Rally. Officers are

still planning an officer meeting as soon as possible to talk about our plans for the 2012-

2013 Key Club year.
