THE CONSENS PROJECT

Intensified continuous processes are a key innovation of the last decade for the production of high quality, high

value and customer-specific products at competitive prices in a sustainable fashion. To realise the potential of

this technology, key steps must be made towards long-term stable, tightly controlled and fully automated

production. The goal of the CONSENS project is to advance the continuous production of high-value products

meeting high quality demands in flexible, intensified, continuous plants by introducing novel online sensing

equipment and closed loop control of the key product parameters. CONSENS will focus on flexible continuous

plants but the results will be transferable also to large-scale continuous processes. The research and

development is driven by industrial case studies from three different areas, spanning the complete value chain

of chemical production: complex organic synthesis, specialty polymers, and formulation of complex liquids.

Innovative PAT technology will be developed for online concentration measurements (mid-resolution process

NMR), for the online non-invasive measurement of rheological properties of complex fluids, and for continuous

measurements of fouling in tubular reactors. New model-based adaptive control schemes based on innovative

PAT technology will be developed. The project results will be validated in industrial pilot plants for all three

types of process, including validation in production containers that have been developed in the F3 Factory

project. Furthermore, methods for sensor failure monitoring, control performance monitoring and engineering

support for PAT-based solutions will be developed. The exploitation of the new technologies will be facilitated

by a tool for technology evaluation and economic impact assessment. A Cross-sectorial Advisory Board

supports the transfer of PAT technologies and adaptive control to neighbouring sectors of the European

processing industry.

1 Executive summary The purpose of this deliverable is to provide a complete report of the dissemination and exploitation

strategy and the related activities realised by the CONSENS partners in the first 18 months of the

project.

The deliverable is organised as follows:

Chapter 2 summarises the objectives and the dissemination and exploitation strategy, as well

as their evolution.

Chapter 3 presents the development of the communication material and activities conducted

in the first half of the project.

Chapter 4 focuses on the initial dissemination of project results, more specifically peer-

reviewed publications published, events attended and presentations presented as well as

networking activities.

Chapter 5 contains a public summary of the exploitation strategy and activities.

Chapter 6 aims to present the next steps from month 19 to the end of the project (Month 36).

Responsibilities

INNO leads work package 5 “Impact Assessment, Exploitation and Dissemination” and is in charge of

the implementation of the communication campaign, including the creation of a visual identity,

publicity and promotion material, as well as the set up and regular update of the project website.

This task is supported by TUDO and INVITE on the strategic level. Within work package 5 INVITE is in

the lead for “Exploitation” and is supported by INNO. INVITE will coordinate and promote the

exploitation of the project results.

All other project partners are involved in the communication and dissemination activities, and are

requested to provide updates on a monthly basis about their activities by filling dissemination tables

sent by e-mail. Those updates are then added to the repositories on the SharePoint. In terms of

exploitation all partners are regularly asked to provide input regarding the current results and the

plans for their use.

Target audiences and specific needs

As identified in the dissemination plan, the following communities were targeted in the first half of

the project:

Chemical industry stakeholders such as process industries, members of the SPIRE initiative,

associations of process industries in Europe, European Technology Platforms (ETPs) and

others.

Research community such as the SPIRE initiative, other related projects such as the EU funded

project PROPAT (project number 637232), European R&D organisations and the higher

education and academia community.

Synergies with SPIRE

CONSENS has used the SPIRE label and benefits from the following dissemination support

provided by the SPIRE Secretariat:

Integration of the projects’ information in the SPIRE web-based platform;

Link between project-devoted websites and the SPIRE website;

Reaching out to target audiences;

Joint and widespread circulation of information through newsletters and press releases;

Featuring project in SPIRE publications;

Sharing the project’ news/presentations/publications on social networking sites;

Support in preparing publications, workshops, meetings and other types of initiatives.

Timing of the project

The timing of the dissemination activities follows a two-step approach. The first step is the

elaboration of the dissemination material, which is finalised and described in the deliverable “D5.1

Communication strategy and communication tools”. This step is extremely important as it is the most

significant milestone allowing the successful dissemination of the project. The material will be a

vehicle for the distribution of information about the project progress.

The second step is the dissemination of the project results developed by the project. The aim here is

to disseminate the outcome of the project to the biggest possible part of the target audience defined

above. This step is done over the entire duration of the project and has already started over the past

months as the first results of the project have become available.

The CONSENS project has been presented on several events, where publicity material and

presentations have been distributed. Several additional communication materials have been

prepared, such as a project leaflet and a presentation poster. They have and will be presented in

events and are available online on the project website: www.consens-spire.eu. Networking with

related communities has also been strengthened through the SPIRE community.

In terms of exploitation an exploitation plan and initial business plan has been developed in the first

half of 2015 and been updated in the beginning of 2016. To provide a common framework for all

project partners with regards to the protection of intellectual property an IP manual as well as a

board for intellectual property rights and exploitation has been created.

As CONSENS is a research project, it is important to note that the majority of the publications about

the results are planned for the second half of the project. The dissemination activities will continue

and be extended as the project progresses. A similar development is planned for the exploitation

activities. As the project advances the results and their particular features and capabilities become

clearer, targeted measures and activities will be carried out. Consequently, exploitation efforts will

intensify in the second half of the project as well.

2 Introduction and overall strategy This section is a quick reminder about CONSENS overall objectives and strategy developed in the

Description of Action (DoA) for the tasks T5.4 and T5.5 and in the communication strategy described

in the deliverable D5.1.

Objectives of dissemination and exploitation 2.1

Based on the DoA, the objectives of the CONSENS dissemination strategy are the following:

To communicate about the project and promote scientific dissemination of the project

progress and results.

To raise awareness of the project and promote the project work, but more specifically:

• To attract attention from potential customers, suppliers and technology providers.

• To attract other stakeholders in order to collaborate further on the project’s topics and

possibly share contributions.

• To present the project activities and results to a larger audience, beyond technical

specialists.

To provide a communication platform (website) that gives easy insight to the outside world

in both the joined activities of the consortium as a group, but also for paying attention to the

achievements of the individual partners.

To support to the intra-corporate dissemination of technical results and their technical

transfer as well as possible transfer to other fields than the ones investigated within

CONSENS.

To ensure a maximum impact of the project results and findings in relevant communities.

Scientific dissemination

Since the start of the project, scientific dissemination has been a key objective. Most of the project

output will be disseminated during the second half of the project’s lifetime (M19-M36) to the

relevant scientific community. Nevertheless, the work in progress and the case studies were

updated in month 15 on the website to disseminate the first CONSENS results to the scientific

community as well as to a broader interested public.

Exploitation and impact assessment

Based on the DoA, the objectives of the CONSENS task related to exploitation and impact

assessment are the following:

Identification of exploitation opportunities

Development of an industrial-oriented exploitation plan and business plan to coordinate and

promote the deployment of the project results

IPR management of relevant research results

Identification of targeted markets

Market analysis to estimate the added value of the different technologies

Development of a benchmarking framework for the assessment of the market-potential of

the technologies covering technical and non-technical aspects

Development of a methodology for assessing the impact of the technologies

• Consideration of economic, social and environmental aspects

• Consideration of partner and industry sector level (EU-wide)

• Promotion of the impact of the project

In the early phase of the project (M01-M18) the main goal has been the identification and first

assessment of technological components well suited for further scientific or commercial application

and the development of an initial strategy for their exploitation. These considerations will be

updated in the second half of the project (M19-M36) and supported by the development of the

previously mentioned methodologies for benchmarking and impact assessment. A detailed

description of the work carried out in the first 18 months is given in section 2.2.2.

Promotion of the impact of the project

The impact assessment will be updated in the second half of the project to estimate more precisely

in which conditions and to what extent the output of the project will be spread beyond its initial

target (chemical industries) and create benefits for the European industry in terms of economic,

social and environmental sustainability. The dissemination tools and channels already identified will

be used to promote the impact of the project.

Dissemination strategy and its evolution 2.2.1

The dissemination activities in CONSENS are based on the deliverable 5.1 “Communication Strategy

and Communication tools” elaborated and issued in month 3 of the project.

The timing of the dissemination activities follows a two-step approach:

1. The elaboration of the dissemination material and identification of the target group.

2. The dissemination of information processed by the project. This phase has successfully

started and will be continued throughout the duration of the project.

So far, the following main actions can be listed:

The elaboration of the communication tools has been finalised and the target groups have

been identified. This provides a milestone that allows successful dissemination about the

project to increase the awareness of intended audiences. The material set up is a vehicle for

the distribution of information about the project progress as well as the project results.

Exploitation strategy and its evolution 2.2.2

Introduction

The advanced PAT sensors (BAM and TNO), the adaptive PAT based control strategies (TUDO and

UNICA) and the tools and models developed for the evaluation of process control data (CLARIANT,

BTS and ATLAN) have a strong potential for commercial and scientific exploitation. In order to enable

a coordinated and planned approach for the active exploitation of the results during and after the

project runtime a strategy has already been developed in the beginning of 2015.

The objective of CONSENS exploitation strategy is to establish suitable activities and guidelines

in order to ensure the exploitation of the project results. The exploitation strategy

distinguishes between commercial and scientific exploitation:

Exploitation

Scientific exploitation

Teaching

Publication

Commercial exploitation

Subsequent research

activities

Internal implementation

Provision of services

Licensing

Sale

...

Figure 2: CONSENS general exploitation strategy

Commercial exploitation

The objective of the commercial exploitation strategy is to transfer the CONSENS results into

products or services which can be introduced and offered to the relevant markets. Therefore

the exploitation strategy will guide and support the partners. Market oriented exploitation is

especially relevant for those technologies achieving a rather high technology readiness level

(TRL) at the end of the project (explanation of TRL: see section 5.1).

Scientific exploitation

Regarding scientific exploitation, the main objectives are the presentation of the project

results to a broad audience and their use for further research activities. The CONSENS research

project focuses on the concept validation of novel technologies with a low TRL. The different

technologies and services developed in CONSENS are estimated to reach the market readiness

in an average between 2-5 years after the project. Consequently, scientific exploitation

represents a substantial part of the overall strategy.

A detailed description of the development of the exploitation strategy is given in section 5.1.

Evolution

M01-M06

In the starting phase of the CONSENS project (M01-M06) a common exploitation

strategy as well as first individual exploitation plans were defined. An initial business

plan was developed in order to identify targeted markets and guide the commercial

exploitation. Based on the conducted market analysis, the business plan defines the

value proposition and pricing strategies for the different technologies. In summary the

main activities were:

Raise awareness for the future exploitation of the results

Develop and communicate the basic exploitation strategy between partners

Identify research results suited for further exploitation

Identify targeted markets

Definition of the value proposition for each technology

Estimations on dates for market introduction, sales figures and pricing strategies

Definition of rules regarding the protection of intellectual property

M07-M18

In the further course of the CONSENS project (M07-M18) the exploitation plan was

updated according to the current status. The main objective for this period was to

specify the planning for each partner. Exemplary, these topics were addressed:

Update of the individual exploitation strategy

Identification of steps foreseen in the project in order to reach the exploitation goal

Identification of dependencies between partners

Identification of hurdles compromising the exploitation

Definition of the individual IP strategies

Update of the market analysis

Identification of supportive workshops, seminars or services focused on exploitation

A public summary of the exploitation activities is given in chapter 5.

Networking with relevant communities 4.4

In order to increase the efficiency of the project, the activities pursued by CONSENS are being

synchronised with relevant external initiatives and confronted with different stakeholders’ views:

SPIRE 4.4.1

As planned in the CONSENS Communication strategy, joint dissemination activities are organised on

a regular basis with SPIRE under different formats (conferences, articles, newsletters). The joint

dissemination actions aim to improve visibility and uptake of project results as well as help identify

collaboration opportunities during the project’s lifetime.

The following section describes the joint activities with SPIRE starting with the publication of articles

on the SPIRE website:

Organisation of a joint workshop initiative with PROPAT

The SPIRE conferences and workshops organised in Brussels once a year provide opportunities to

meet with other EU projects working on similar issues and having common objectives. After the

SPIRE Conference in April 2015, CONSENS and the PROPAT project

decided to work together on the organisation of a common

workshop.

PROPAT aims to develop novel sensors and analysers for providing measurements on composition,

particle size and local bulk properties, as well as more traditional but smart sensors for measuring

other process parameters, and integrate them into a versatile global control platform for data

acquisition, data processing & mining and User Interface in order to measure properties of process

streams and products, accurately and in real-time.

The CONSENS - PROPAT cooperation was initiated in M15.

5 Public summary of exploitation

activities In order to facilitate an effective use of the CONSENS results, a strategy for the protection and

exploitation of intellectual property has to be developed and implemented. A public summary of the

according strategies and activities is given in this section.

Development of the exploitation strategy 5.1The goal of the CONSENS project is to introduce novel online sensing equipment combined with

closed loop control of key product parameters for continuous production. Furthermore methods for

sensor failure detection, control performance monitoring and engineering support for PAT-based

solutions will be developed. The development of the new technologies will mainly be carried out by

the research institutes and academia. The technologies will then be demonstrated in an industrial

environment at the facilities of the partners from the process industry.

For the exploitation strategy of the new developed technologies the Technical Readiness Level (TRL)

is considered as a guiding indicator. The TRL is used to assess the development status of a technology

from a basic principle (TRL 1) up to a fully operational product (TRL 9) (see Figure 12).

Figure 12: TRL Scale, Reference: Horizon 2020 - Work programme 2014-2015, Annex G: Technology

readiness levels (TRL)

Based on the current feedback from the partners a certain TRL range has been identified. For the

novel sensor technologies the readiness level is currently in between 3-4. In terms of the developed

software tools a higher TRL (4-5) has already been achieved. It is expected that the sensing tools will

reach TRL 5 at the end of the project while the developed software tools will reach a TRL closer to 6.

The partners estimate that market readiness will in average be achieved in 2-5 years after the project

end.

Taking the actual and desired TRL into account as well as the background of the different partners, it

is possible to deduce different exploitation strategies and activities. The exploitation strategies can

be divided in two major areas of commercial and scientific exploitation.

www.consens-spire.eu

In cooperation with the project partners a first overview on the direction of exploitation was

generated. Figure 13 shows the different planned and executed exploitation activities. As a result of

the different background of the partners ranging from academia to industry, various exploitation

activities are envisioned. The exploitation activities are uniformly distributed in the areas of scientific

and commercial exploitation.

Figure 13: Overview of exploitation activities

Commercial exploitation

The industrial partners (ARKEMA, ATLAN, BASF, BTS, CLARIANT, COATEX, KROHNE, P&G and SOLVAY)

will mainly focus on the commercial exploitation. The commercial exploitation is closely connected to

the developed business plan and will for example be achieved by licensing of the newly developed

software tools and selling of the innovative sensor technologies. The provision of services will be

another potential exploitation activity. The fourth part of the commercial exploitation will be an

internal implementation of the technologies in the production plants of the respective companies.

An individual exploitation strategy for each partner was defined in the initial exploitation plan

together with the business plan. This plan is continuously improved and adapted to the current

research progress. A detailed documentation of the work carried out is given in section 2.2.2. As

described in section 6.1 several activities are planned in order to adjust the exploitation strategy

according to the project outcome.

The sensor failure detection from ATLAN as well as the control performance monitoring tool

developed by CLARIANT already reached a rather high TRL. An example for a successful

demonstration of a technology in an industrial environment is given in section 5.5.

Scientific exploitation

The scientific exploitation of CONSENS results will especially carried out by the academic partners

(BAM, TNO, TUDO, INVITE and UNICA). On the one hand scientific exploitation is achieved through

scientific publications and contributions to conferences. Scientific dissemination will contribute to a

broad awareness of the generated results within the CONSENS project. A summary of the scientific

dissemination activities in the first 18 months is given in section 4. On the other hand CONSENS is

used for scientific education by offering Master and PhD theses on CONSENS topics (BAM, INVITE,

TUDO and UNICA).

Due to low TRL of some developed technologies, e. g. the novel online fouling sensor, it is expected

that further research projects will be initiated in order to finalise the development. Bilateral research

projects between the academia and industrial partners with defined applications would be a

promising chance to further increase the TRL.

Targeted markets and market analysis 5.2The CONSENS project is focused on the chemical industry. In this regard, industries such as the fine

chemical industry, the polymer industry and the consumer good industry are targeted. The primary

targeted markets are represented by the three different case studies. The first case study contains an

intensified lithiation reaction for the synthesis of complex organic molecules. The formation of

complex molecules can for example be found in the crop and pharmaceutical industries. The

achievements made in the second case study may be used for further exploitation in the markets for

polyamides, polyesters and thermoplastic polyesters. The third case study is addressing the markets

for consumer goods such as cleaning agents and personal care products. An overview of the targeted

markets is given in the table below.

Case study Market

1. Intensified synthesis of organic compounds

Fine chemical industry

Crop industry

Pharmaceutical industry

2. Production of high-viscous polymers

Polymer industry in general:

• Polyamides

• Polyesters

• Thermoplastic polyesters

3. Continuous formulation of complex liquids Personal care industry

Table 4: Targeted markets sorted by case study

In addition to the markets addressed in the case studies a broader application of the technologies is

planned. This is well possible because the results of CONSENS will apply to all continuous flow-

processes and therefore also provide an impact on other processing industries. Based on an

27

Deliverable D5.4

Progress on exploitation and dissemination, First Period Public

H2020-SPIRE-2014 – Project 636942

www.consens-spire.eu

assessment by the project partners relevant industries could be identified. The different sectors are

illustrated in the following Figure.

Figure 14: Qualitative assessment for relevant industries by the CONSENS consortium

Beside the already addressed industries in the case studies, Figure 14 shows that the developed

technologies are expected to have an impact on a variety of industries. Viscosity is often a key

parameter in the food industry and used for monitoring and quality control. The novel fouling sensor

could be very helpful in the food industry as well. Especially the dairy industry has often to deal with

fouling. Online NMR concentration measurements could have positive impact in the industries for

personal care and petrochemicals. The developed software tools such as the sensor failure detection

and the performance monitoring could be exploited over a wide range of industries. The CONSENS

results can consequently have an impact on multiple industries.

Market analysis

Part of the initial business plan is a market analysis. It provides an overview of the existing

technologies and services being commercially available. The analysis allows identifying possible

market gaps. The project partners can target their research efforts to address these needs. This will

enable an efficient commercial and scientific exploitation of CONSENS results. The market for sensor

technology and the market of currently available monitoring and evaluation tools have been

examined. The market analysis was then updated in the course of the project.

Cross Sectorial Advisory Board – Support of 5.3

exploitation The Cross Sectorial Advisory Board (CAB) supports the consortium in ensuring scientific excellence

and improving the exploitation strategy. It consists of external scientists and managers from most

28

Deliverable D5.4

Progress on exploitation and dissemination, First Period Public

H2020-SPIRE-2014 – Project 636942

www.consens-spire.eu

relevant sectors of the European processing community. The CAB is consulted to gather their

requirements and inputs on their needs and visions in terms of optimization of the continuous and

automatic controls in industry processes and provides the consortium with market as well as

technological insights for aspects needed to assess the potential of the CONSENS technology. The

exchange allows adapting the business plan and the exploitation strategies to the different sectors

and their specific requirements. In summary the CAB aims to raise the awareness of possible

exploitation opportunities and increase the visibility at a higher European level.

The first meeting of the Cross Sectorial Advisory Board (CAB) took place in conjunction with the

plenary meeting at the Clariant Innovation Center in Frankfurt-am-Main one year after the project’s

launch. A press release has been published “CONSENS Press Release – Positive Feedback from the

Cross Sectorial Advisory Board” (see section 3.1.4).

At this occasion, the project partners presented the progress of their research on novel online

sensing equipment, closed- loop control methods, and software tools for monitoring and design

evaluation to the CAB members coming from the following sectors:

Oil industry (Sartec S.p.A),

Food industry (Bühler AG),

Lab scale systems, pilot plants, demonstration plants and small modular commercial plants

(Zeton B.V),

Process automation (Schneider Electric SA)

The results as well as the opportunities and obstacles to transfer the concepts, methods and

technologies into different sectors of the process industry were discussed.

Three CAB meetings are planned during the lifetime of the project. The next meeting with the CAB

will take place in December 2016.

IPR-E Board and IP manual 5.4The research carried out during CONSENS will generate significant intellectual property. In order to

ensure further and extended industrial and commercial use of the results, the protection of

intellectual property rights is a crucial task. This topic has been addressed by the establishment of

the Board for Intellectual Property Rights and Exploitation and the development of an IP manual.

IPR-E Board

In order to manage the intellectual property developed within CONSENS and support their

exploitation the Intellectual Property Rights and Exploitation Board (IPR-E Board) has been set up in

the beginning of 2015. Briefly, the IPR-E Board:

Keeps track of Background IP to be included/withdrawn

Organizes approval of any type of public documents (patents filed, scientific publications,

and other types of public documents (Dissemination))

Keeps track of results / licensing

May have to convince results’ owners to make their results accessible and usable for the

whole consortium for dissemination or use;

Moderates disputes of partners in disagreement on IPR-E issues.

IP manual

An IP manual has been developed and distributed among all partners in June 2015. The document

provides a short overview on IP and scientific publications issues and procedures, and provides a

decision process to address these IP issues. The IP manual emphasizes that, according to the Grant

Agreement, each partner has to protect the results generated within CONSENS.

More specifically, the IP manual provides:

A short description of the IPR-E

Definitions of background IP and project’s results

A short description of the created register of background IP belonging to consortium

members and how to use it

A short description of the procedure to exploit the results of the project

In order to allow for all partners a clear view of the results achieved within the projects and report to

the European Commission, 3 living documents titled

Register of Results – Patents

Register of Results – Publications

Register of Results – Confidential know-how

have been created.

In order to allow each partner to give their opinion about the results, the following steps have been

defined:

STEP 1 – IDENTIFICATION

Results need to be identified by each partner and categorised as one of the following:

(A) Results (to be) patented

(B) Results (to be) published

(C) Results – confidential know-how

STEP 2 – VALIDATION

Results to be patented and results to be published need to be validated by the General

Assembly during the project and for a period of 1 year after the end of the project. The

validation period takes up to 45 days.

• Results to be patented: As soon as possible, partners should file for patent, and

then inform the other partners of the filed patents. If other partners consider that

changes are necessary, it will still be possible. If there is a bigger concern, then the

application could be withdrawn.

• Results to be published: Before submitting a paper for publication or an abstract

for a conference, formal approval of the General Assembly is necessary. The owner

of the results needs to send the document to the General Assembly and allow them

45 days for reactions.

30

Deliverable D5.4

Progress on exploitation and dissemination, First Period Public

H2020-SPIRE-2014 – Project 636942

www.consens-spire.eu

Any partner may object to the planned publication within the 45 calendar days after receipt

of the notice, if it can show that its legitimate interests in relation to the results or

background would be significantly harmed. The objection has to include a precise request for

necessary modifications. In such cases, the dissemination may not take place unless

appropriate steps are taken to safeguard these legitimate interests.

Members of the General Assembly must also check the publication for patentable

components during the publication approval procedure. If components are patentable, a

patent application has to be filled before publication. In this case, a publication can be

published after the filing date.

A detailed procedure for validation has been defined. Once the General Assembly has

approved the publication of the results, the process can move forward.

STEP 3 – ENTRY of the RESULTS IN THE REGISTERS.

Once the results have been validated by the General Assembly, the owner of the results

needs to enter the information in one of the three living documents titled “Register of

Results” on the CONSENS SharePoint. The information to fill out depends on the type of

results.

Technology demonstration 5.5In the following section an example for a recent pre-commercial exploitation activity from CLARIANT

is given.

CLARIANT: Performance monitoring

In most plants the optimum performance is not a fix value but a function of time. The changes in

performance can be caused by fouling, catalyst deactivation or seasonal effects. Therefore it is

necessary to evaluate, if an autonomous control system really reaches the optimum performance or

if adaptations are needed to improve the predictive control model itself. Additional to the mentioned

aging and fouling effects with very long time scales unpredictable outside disturbances on short

timescales can occur as well. A systematic and automated performance monitoring algorithm is

necessary to realize deviations early enough to keep the system at its best performance. Since

advanced control systems try to improve the existing good plant performance, it is often hard to

detect if a system is working at the optimal operating point. This means that additionally to the long

time scale effects and unpredictable outside disturbances a very accurate observation of the

performance is necessary in order to distinguish for instance aging from weak control of the process.

For demonstration purposes data from an existing large scale production plant has been used. The

implemented advanced control system directly uses measured data from on-line sensors of the

product quality. From this, the performance of the plant can be derived directly. The plant shows

significant load changes and also stable load levels lasting several weeks.

31

Deliverable D5.4

Progress on exploitation and dissemination, First Period Public

H2020-SPIRE-2014 – Project 636942

www.consens-spire.eu

The algorithm of the performance monitoring methodology follows the following steps:

1. Data pre-treatment

2. Clustering of load levels

3. Creating sub clusters to reduce aging effects

4. Cross validation of the performance on the sub-clusters

5. Derive a curve for the expected best performance for each cluster

6. Evaluate distance between actual and expected performance

The evaluation of the actual performance compared to the expected performance shown in Figure

15 is an indicator if the advanced control system runs properly or if maintenance is necessary either

to adapt model parameters (e.g. training periods or parameter weights) or if a significant change of

the model description is necessary.
