DETERMINATION
DETERMINATION NO. 46 OF 1993
Under section 4 of the Public Place Names Act 1989, the determination of the names of the public places mat are Territory Land are described in the attached Schedule 'A' and are as indicated on the attached map.

Nandjiwarra MBE (1925-1989)
SIGNIFICANCE
Aboriginal Statesman N.T. He was an artist,- traditional leader and writer. He lived at Groote Eylandt and was a community leader. He starred in a film called "The Last Wave". He was a baric painter, a member of the Aborigines Trust Fund Committee and President of the Aboriginal Cultural Foundation (Darwin) 1978. He attended a UN seminar, 1980. He was awarded an MBE for community service in 1970.

DIVISION OF NGUNNAWAL: NOTABLE ABORIGINALS AND WORDS
NAME ORIGIN SIGNIFICANCE
BUNGAREE CRESCENT (c.1772-1830) Aboriginal Interpreter and Guide. Described variously as 'Chief of the Broken Bay tribe, a member of the Rose Bay (Sydney) tribe and simply as 'a Port Jackson native*. He accompanied Matthew Flinders in the sloop, 'Norfolk', on a voyage to Moreton Bay, July-August 1799. He also served on the 'Investigator'. 1802-03. Flinders referred to him as. being 'a worthy and brave fellow*. In 1817 he was engaged by Lieutenant P.P. King to serve as interpreter aboard the cutter 'Mermaid*. King described him as a man about 45 years old, of sharp, intelligent and unassuming, disposition. He also took part in Grant's Hunter River expedition.

YIRAWALA STREET MBE (c.1890-1976)
NOBLE CLOSE Rev James Noble (d.1941)
Aborigine. Ceremonial Leader, Painter. He was called "The Picasso of Amhem Land", he was an elder of the Gunwinggu tribe. He received the International Art Cooperation Award and was awarded the MBE in 1971.
Aboriginal Clergyman, Educationist. A Minister of the Church of England, he was a pioneer missionary to his own people in Qld and north-western Australia. Since his death an education fund was raised in his memory which has enabled some promising children to receive a higher education.
