From the President

Thank you to everyone who attended February’s PTSA meeting. It’s always a pleasure to honor our students for their outstanding work academically and otherwise! Dr. Green and Dr. Harrington shared lots of information regarding student achievement, school assessments, staff honors, enrollment for next year, summer school, and Kansas college entrance requirements. PTSA meetings are a great venue to share information about what’s going on with SMNW students and staff, as well as around our community. Election results for next year’s PTSA Board are: Marianne D’Amato (President), Cheryl Entzminger (Vice President), Pam Hale (Treasurer), Barb Vonada (Recording Secretary), and Denise Smith (Corresponding Secretary).

I was approached last week with a question regarding PTSA membership and donations to the cause. Yes, I would encourage each and every one of you to be a PTSA member! If, however, you would like to make a donation directly to PTSA, but not join, that is much appreciated too! Your tax-deductible donation may be made via check to “SMNW PTSA” and turned in to the SMNW office in an envelope marked “PTSA.” Terrific question! Thank you for your support!

After-Prom planning is in high gear. This year’s “Hollywood Nights” gala will be an outstanding night of entertainment for our students! Students can enjoy After-Prom regardless of whether or not they attend prom. Keep your eyes and ears open for information of how you can help make this event a success.

Whether you’re travelling or kicking back for a little relaxation, have a safe and memorable spring break. Enjoy!

National Achievement Scholarship Program

Makela Hayford has been named as an Outstanding Participant in the National Achievement Scholarship Program. These students scored in the top 3 percent of more than 160,000 Black Americans who requested consideration in the 2013 National Achievement Program when they took the 2011 PSAT Test. The National Achievement Program, conducted by National Merit Scholarship Corporation was initiated in 1964 to honor academically promising Black American high school students throughout the nation and provide scholarships to a substantial number of the most outstanding participants in each annual program. Congratulations to Makela Hayford on her outstanding achievement.

“Fighting like a girl” can be a good thing, right? Find out why on Saturday, April 6, from 1:30 – 3:30 pm, in the SMNW gym. The SMNW Cougar Classics and Express Drill Teams, in association with The Ali Kemp Educational (TAKE) Foundation, are offering TAKE Defense training. The event is open to the public and is a great mother-daughter or team bonding experience. It’s all about your education, safety and peace of mind; things that every young girl and woman should have and hold dearly. TAKE

Defense Training provides girls and women of all ages with unique reality-based, high quality hands-on self-defense training. Such training provides safety awareness that everyone needs and deserves. TAKE Defense was established in 2005 by the Kemp family; to date, they have trained over 50,000 girls and women (ages 12 and older) with hands-on self-defense. Locally, regionally, and across the country at colleges and universities, TAKE Defense works to ensure that Ali’s values and spirit live on: to increase safety awareness in young girls and women and to encourage volunteerism in our community. Mr. Kemp says that the goal is clear, “If we can save one life out there, I don’t care what it costs; this whole program will be worth it.” To reserve your space, preregister now at www.takedefense.org – only 300 spaces are available! Cost is $12 per person, collected at the event, cash or check (payable to SMNW DT Booster Club). Bring the online waiver form from your on-line preregistration. Participants under 18 are required to have the waiver signed by parent or guardian for entry. Contact Karen Gleason at 913.558.4943 or at [email protected] with any questions.

Kansas State House Bills Affecting Children & Public Education

The overall nature and sheer volume of bills in the 2013 Kansas Legislative Session that challenge the quality of Kansas K-12 public education is significant. If you want your opinion heard on these bills, please contact your Kansas Representatives and Senators. To find your State Legislator, go to http://capwiz.com/npta2/ks/home/ and enter your address. You may also call the Legislative Toll Free Hotline at 1-800-432-3924. Issues arising in various bills include: Dictating K-12 curriculum: Prohibits the use of Common Core education standards and requires new standards in five core academic areas (HB2289), establishing ‘celebrate freedom’ week and related curriculum (HB2280), establishes a personal financial literacy incentive program (HB2282). Creating new mandates: Prohibits students from promotion to fourth grade if not reading at proficiency on third grade state assessments (SB169, HB 2004), requires services for dyslexia that are redundant and possibly conflicting with federal and state laws (SB 44), requires additional children’s internet protection at cost to the schools (SB 104), imposes school attendance and minimum grade requirements as conditions for driver’s license (HB2045), mandates job protection for legislators (SB119). Eliminating non-partisan safeguards from elections: Moves school board and other local elections to November at the same time as state and federal elections (HB2271), eliminates merit selection process and nominating commission, allowing the governor to appoint supreme court justices and court of appeals judges subject to senate (SCR1601, SCR1605, HCR5002). Restricting education advocacy: Restricts school board lobbying (SB109), requires school districts to hold an election and gain voter approval before joining in school finance litigation (HB2290), prohibits school districts from the use of state appropriated moneys to advocate at the state and local government levels (SB45), prohibits professional teachers’ organizations from offering automatic payroll deductions for union dues (HB 2023). Challenging school finance: Amends article six of the state constitution regarding suitable educational finance (SCR 1608), amends school funding formula (HB2003), changes the calculation of at-risk funding (SB 103), requires districts to vote to increase property tax revenues over previous year (HB2047). Vouchers: Enacting the school district special needs scholarship program (HB2263).

SLAB

Student Library Advisory Board meets every other Wednesday at 2:50 in the library. This is an enthusiastic group of students who love libraries, books and all things reading! We have a few “Dr. Seuss-like” orange and black hats for$5 each to help buy books for the library. These are a great way to show Northwest spirit at the basketball games and other sporting events. We are also still collecting new and gently used books for “Books For Love”. Contact Mrs. LaFever at [email protected]

IB Update

We just completed enrollment for the class of 2015 IB students. Next fall, we will have 89 juniors joining 91 seniors for a total of 180 students involved in the program. That represents an increase of 24 students over this year. Each student will have some fees due associated with their IB courses, and these fees are assessed in August at fee payment time. They may be paid online with a credit card, or in person with a check or cash. Students or parents with any questions on the fees are asked to contact Bill Sanderson at 993-7363 or [email protected]. In other IB news, we added a class in Film Studies to the IB curriculum for the fall of 2013, and are planning to add another course in Environmental Studies for the fall of 2014. These exciting new course offerings further expand the range of experience our IB students have within the IB curriculum, and promise to add much diversity to the current course selection. Bill Sanderson, Program Coordinator

Teacher of the Month

The Future Teacher’s Club is happy to announce the February Teacher of the Month award goes to Randi Platko. Congratulations to Randi for her hard work with our students here at SMNW.

From the Library

March 1 is the 13th annual Read Across America celebration of the birthday of Dr. Seuss. Celebrate with a good book! Make books and reading important in your home; have books, magazines or newspapers available. Check out books from the public library. Encourage your child to check out books from the school library. Set aside time for reading. Choose reading over television or computers. Hopefully this article will be useful for parents as you “Help Your High School Student Enjoy Reading”. For most students in high school the amount and difficulty of reading increases considerably. Highlights of the article: Talk about your reading difficulties, make reading interactive, encourage reading for pleasure, model good reading habits and help your child make time for reading. http://www.schoolfamily.com/school-family-articles/article/10797-help-your-high-school-student-enjoy-reading#.USTjuFw1ZUA.email. Check out the MakerSpace, coming March 2013 to Central Resource Library! Maker Mondays, drop in programs 5:00-9:00pm. The MakerSpace is a place you can go to learn new skills and software, make cool stuff, and customize your world. Use the space to play, tinker, and experiment with media, design, and electronics in an open and collaborative environment. There are no age limits here. A 10 year old can teach classes and a 70 year old can play with toys. This is DIY learning at its best.
