Indian Institute of Science Alumni Association
Distinguished Alumnus Award - Overview
What is Distinguished Alumnus Award? The Distinguished Alumnus Award is recognition of alumni of the Indian Institute of Science that are well known and respected in their chosen field and have made significant contributions in academia, industry and other fields around the world. It is awarded by the IISc Alumni Association. When was the award instituted and who have been the recipients? The award was instituted in 1977 and 2 awards were typically given every year. During the platinum and centenary years in 1985 and 2008 respectively, 16 awards were given on each of these special occasions. Starting in 2009, the number of annual awards has been increased to 5. The complete list of the 97 awardees is included in the annexure. Who decides the awards? A selection committee, chaired by IIScAA President, with members from both IISc and IIScAA will review the nominations and shortlist the candidates. The members of the committee are selected such that the diverse disciplines and roles in which IISc alumni are active are well represented. The names of the awardees for the year are finalized in consultation with and approval of the Director of the Institute. Is there an award ceremony? Yes, the awards are given during the Annual General Meeting of IISc Alumni Association which is held on the first Saturday in August each year. How are candidates identified and nominated? Each year, communication is sent to members of IISc AA seeking nominations. Since the email list was incomplete and many email ids were incorrect, in past years several of our alumni have not been aware of the nomination process. Nominations were received from contemporaries on campus, colleagues and friends; there have been no self-nominations.

The process has been streamlined for the last two years to ensure greater participation of alumni. What is the need for a new process? During the centenary year conference which was attended by over 5000 delegates and where 16 distinguished alumni awards were given, the award became more visible. This also raised many questions on communication, nomination, criteria, selection, etc. To ensure greater participation, high visibility, transparency and objectivity, the process has been redesigned. Who is eligible to be nominated? Any person who had registered for a program and was awarded a degree by IISc is eligible to be nominated. The nomination can be sent by any person (i.e., person sending the nomination need not be an IISc alumnus) What criteria should I use to identify and propose a person for the award? Since there is no quantitative way to define outstanding accomplishment and contribution, there is an element of subjectivity in both nomination and final selection. However, it is possible to use guidelines that will ensure that only candidates that have a reasonable chance of being chosen for the award are nominated:
- The person must be well known and respected in his / her chosen field. This usually implies that the person would have received other awards in recognition of his/her performance and contribution from reputed institutions and publications.
- Academia uses measures such as number of publications and citations, h-index and others that are widely accepted. Industry uses revenue, profitability, market capitalization, etc. to measure business leaders. Depending on the field in which the candidate works, appropriate criteria should be used
- Profile and track record of past award winners provides useful information that you can use to benchmark. Two recent citations are attached for reference.
Is there a template I can use for nomination? Nomination Form is enclosed. You can include relevant media reports or other third party news items as attachments. Avoid including too much details such as complete list of publications or patents a well written nomination typically contains 4-5 pages. Where should I send nominations? Nominations using printed matter should be addressed to :
-

The General Secretary IISc Alumni Association Indian Institute of Science Bangalore 560012 India Tel : 23600180 / 22932597 Nominations by email should be sent to [email protected] In addition to sending nominations, are there other ways that I can participate in the process? Yes, you can help by sharing this communication with other alumni that may not have received it directly. Some of them may not have become members of IISc Alumni Association. You can invite them to become members or send their contact information to us and we will contact them. This will significantly widen and strengthen the alumni network. You can also suggest people (including yourself) to be part of the search committee.
