Grandparents We celebrated grandparents at our first Title I DAC General Meeting. Being a grandparent is very different from being a parent. As a parent, we are so thrilled to cuddle our newborn baby, but I think holding our grandbaby can triple the excitement. Grandparents are here to help their children’s children by being back-up transporters, super cheerleaders, chief cooks, spoiling them, and sometimes raising them. At times it can be a challenge; yet it’s a fulfilling time in a Grand’s life. Thank you grandparents for being a great support system! The proverb says, “Children’s children are the crown of old men.” Grands are the best! Teachers These are some of my favorite statements on a bumper sticker about teachers: Teachers plant the seeds of knowledge that last a lifetime; Teaching is a work of heart; Live, Love, Teach; Teachers make all other occupations possible; and I’m a teacher, what’s your superpower? This is the time of year when each Miami-Dade County public school chooses and celebrates its Teacher of the Year (TOY). If he or she happens to be your child’s teacher, the entire class gets excited and each child brings that excitement home. I have had the opportunity to observe and read about these outstanding educators who bring magnificent opportunities to their classrooms to enhance student achievement. I encourage you to salute your school’s TOY, and show your school pride. Learn about their accomplishments and thank them wholeheartedly for their commitment and creativity. On behalf of the Title I DAC Executive Board. I congratulate and salute grandparents and teachers – may your days always be filled with joy because of your love for our children. Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) students and teachers began this school year with a host of new, bold programs that build on the District’s goal of providing classroom innovation, academic rigor, and increased student access.

Fifty-nine new choice/magnet programs were created for 2016-2017, the most ever in one year. These new courses bring the total of choice programs to nearly 600. The new programs are in the areas of STEM (robotics, coding, biomedical), music, entertainment technology, business studies, visual and performing arts, Advanced Placement, legal studies, and sports medicine and management. The 2017-2018 Open Enrollment for Magnet Programs began October 1, 2016, and ends on Sunday, January 15, 2017. Online applications in multiple languages can be accessed via the Magnet Application System at www.miamimagnets.org. This system simplifies the application process, increases parental access to information, and enhances communication throughout the process with a how-to-video guide. For additional information regarding the Open Enrollment for Magnet Programs, please contact the Office of School Choice & Parental Options at 305 995-1922.

The District deployed an additional 35,000 mobile devices to assist students and parents in our new era of technology and learning. This brings the total number of mobile devices distributed to nearly 140,000. This year, the devices are being used in 6th grade U.S. History, 7th grade Language Arts, and 11th grade Language Arts and U.S. History. Additionally, 900 Interactive White Boards and 8,000 teacher desktop computers will be added to replace aging equipment in classrooms throughout the District. Learn more about the District’s Digital Convergence at http://digital.dadeschools.net/.

A Parents Helping Parents (PHP) initiative has been implemented to increase meaningful parental involvement by enhancing parents’ understanding of federal, state, and District policies impacting their children. This program expands the parent outreach and support services provided by the newly established Department of Family Support Services. It also improves parents’ advocacy skills on behalf of their children and teaches them to effectively share information and support with other parents at each school. Learn more at http://fss.dadeschools.net/.

The District-wide Values Matter Miami initiative has been expanded. Values Matter Miami is a yearlong campaign to promote a positive school culture by addressing the social/emotional needs of all students, leading to increased school safety and student achievement. Values highlighted in the second grading period include citizenship and pursuit of excellence. A comprehensive framework will be aligned to curricula for each designated grading period value(s) with resources available from community-based services and the District’s Student Services support personnel. Learn more at http://osi.dadeschools.net/valuesmatter/.

With the lead of our dedicated parents, this will be yet another exciting and exceptional year of academic enrichment and exploration that will inspire our students. More new initiatives and many other resources available in the District can be viewed at http://news.dadeschools.net/toolkit/toolkit.htm.

Title I Neighborhood Resource Center Enhances Knowledge and SkillsDid you know that the Miami-Dade County Public Schools’ Department of Title I Administration has a center specifically designed to provide information and support to parents of children participating in the Title I Schoolwide Program? The Title I Neighborhood Resource Center (NRC), located in the Northside Shopping Centre, provides a welcoming atmosphere for families to visit and be part of monthly parent workshops, receive information about school and community resources, and participate in activities that are educational and fun. Each month’s focus is on a particular theme and a specific core value that students learn through the Values Matter Miami Initiative. By focusing on set themes and core values, parents can expand their knowledge and skills in ways that contribute to their child’s well-being and overall academic success.

From October through December, Catalyst of Miami facilitated the People Empowering People Program at the Title I NRC. This 10-week series, funded through The Children’s Trust, goal is to develop parental/family leadership skills by building upon individual strengths and life experiences. Topics such as Understanding Ourselves and Others as Parents, Understanding Our Children, and Our Community and Its Leaders, encourage growth in communication and problem-solving skills, parent/family relationships, and place strong emphasis on community involvement.

For more information on workshops and other events scheduled at the Title I NRC, please visit our center, located at 7900 N.W. 27th Avenue, Suite F-9, Miami, Florida 33147, contact us at 305-694-7120, or visit the Title I NRC webpage, title1.dadeschools.net/NRC.asp. We hope to see you at our next exciting activity.
