May 2016 Dear Teacher, 2016 marks 100 years since the birth of Roald Dahl – the world’s number one storyteller! 2016 is also the Year of Adventure here in Wales! Why not encourage your pupils to write their own Dahl inspired adventure story (up to 800 words), then enter them into the Dahlightful Stories Competition, which is a an official Roald Dahl 100 Wales contest for children in Years 3 to 6 and living in Wales. Not only is this a challenging and fun activity, pupils could see themselves as published writers! Enclosed is a lesson plan and classroom activity sheets, which make it easy and fun for your pupils to get started and take part. PRIMary Category 2016TERMS & CONDITIONS: 1. By entering this competition, you agree to accept and be

bound by these terms and conditions. All entry instructionsform part of the terms and conditions of this competition.

2. This competition is open to children in Years 3 to 6 and resident in Wales, except for employees of the Promoter, its subsidiary companies, their families and any other company connected with the competition. Proof of age, identity and eligibility may be requested.

3. To enter this competition you must write an adventure story no longer than 800 words. Entries can be emailed or sent by post using the forms provided, together with the entrant’s name, school year and school’s name. All stories should be submitted in English or Welsh. Only one entry per person is allowed and stories cannot have multiple authors. If one entrant submits more than one story, only their first story will be considered.

4. The winning stories will be published so it is important thatentries must not contain any unsuitable, obscene, offensiveor defamatory material. Entries which do not adhere tothese terms and conditions may be removed from thecompetition.

5. Entries become the property of the Promoter and cannot bereturned so please remember to retain a copy. No feedbackon individual entries that are not shortlisted will be given.

6. By entering this competition each entrant confirms thathis/her entry is their wholly-owned creation and tothe extent that such entry makes use of any third partymaterials that these have been fully cleared unless theyare no longer protected by copyright or other intellectualproperty rights. Entrants will keep the Promoter harmlessfrom any claims in relation to their entry that the entryinfringes the personal or proprietary right of any otherperson. By submitting an entry, each entrant (or theirparent/guardian on their behalf) grants to the Promotera perpetual, royalty-free, non-exclusive licence to edit,publish, translate, modify, adapt, make available anddistribute the entry throughout the world in any medianow known or hereafter invented. Each entrant (or theirparent/guardian on their behalf) undertakes to completeany necessary documentation to formalise the licence.If you do not want to grant us these rights, please do notsubmit materials to us.

7. By entering this competition the entrant agrees that thePromoter may at its sole discretion edit, adapt, abridge ortranslate the entry for purposes listed in clause 6 above.

8. Entry opens on 30 May 2016 and the closing date for thecompetition is noon GMT 15 July 2016 (closing date). Entriesreceived after the closing date will not be considered.Responsibility will not be accepted for corrupted, illegible,incomplete, lost or damaged entries, whether due to systemerror or otherwise. Proof of posting or sending is not proof

of receipt and proof of entering the competition is not proof of the Promoter’s receipt of entry. Automatically generated entries or entries via agents or third parties are invalid and will not be considered.

9. All correctly completed entries will first be judged by the Promoter’s employees. The top 30 shortlisted entries will then be read and judged by the Judging Panel. The winner will be the entry that, in the opinion of the judges, is the most creative and well written. There will be 2 winners in the Primary Category (one in the English-language category and one in the Welsh-language category). The winning stories will be published in an anthology. The winner will also win an individual prize. The winner’s school will also win a prize chosen by the Promoter. No cash alternative will be offered. Events may occur which render the awarding of the prizes impossible due to reasons beyond the control of the Promoter and the Promoter may, at its absolute discretion, vary, amend or suspend any of the prizes with or without notice.

10. The competition will be judged within 60 days of the closingdate and the parent or guardian of the winner will benotified by email. The parent or guardian of the winner willhave 10 working days to confirm acceptance of their prizein order to meet print deadlines for the story to be printedin the anthology. Otherwise the Promoter reserves theright to reallocate the prize to a reserve winner selected inaccordance with these rules.

11. The winners agree to the promoter’s use of their name,town of residence and photograph in relation to thepromoter’s publicity material.

12. The promoter will use any data submitted by entrantsonly for the purposes of running the competition, unlessotherwise stated in the entry details. By entering thiscompetition, all entrants consent to the use of theirpersonal data by the Promoter for the purposes of theadministration of this competition and any other purposesto which the entrant has consented.

13. The winner agrees to take part in reasonable post-eventpublicity and to the use of their names and photographs insuch publicity.

14. The Promoter may disqualify any entrant whose entrydoes not comply with these terms and conditions (in thePromoter’s sole opinion) or who, in the Promoter’s soledetermination, has acted in a manner that is fraudulent,dishonest or unjust to other entrants including, withoutlimitation, tampering with the operation of the competition,manipulating or rigging votes, hacking, deceiving, cheatingor by harassing or threatening other entrants or arepresentative of the Promoter.

FURTHER INFORMATION ABOUT ROALD DAHL AND HIS LEGACY: Roald Dahl was a spy, ace fighter-pilot, chocolate historian and medical inventor. He was also the author of CharlieandtheChocolateFactory, Matilda, TheBFG andmanymorebrilliantstories.HeremainstheWorld’sNo.1 storyteller.

Born in Cardiff of Norwegian descent, Roald Dahl (1916–1990)joinedtheRAFattheageof23andbeganwriting,initiallyforadults,afterbeinginjuredinaplanecrashduringWorldWarII.

Sittinginahutatthebottomofhisgarden,surroundedby odd bits and pieces such as a suitcase (used as a footrest),hisownhipbone(whichhe’dhadreplaced)andaheavyballofmetalfoil(madefromyears’worthof chocolate wrappers), he went on to write some of the world’sbest-lovedchildren’sstories.Hisfirstchildren’sstory, JamesandtheGiantPeach, was published in 1961, was a hit and every subsequent book became a bestseller.

Today, his stories are available in 58 languages and, by a conservative estimate, he has sold more than 200 million books. Many of these stories have also been adapted for stage and screen, including the 1971 film classic WillyWonkaandtheChocolateFactory, WesAnderson’sacclaimedFantasticMrFox, and the multi-award-winning Matilda The MusicalfromtheRSCwithmusicbyTimMinchin.ThenextRoaldDahlstorytohitthebigscreenwillbeStevenSpielberg’sadaptationof TheBFG, which is set for release in July 2016.
