Enquirer Article

Each week, I’m allowed to write an article for our local paper “The Hartselle Enquirer”. Todd also writes one. I’m surprised at how many people read the articles. On a regular basis, I will meet peo-ple in town, and they will talk about the articles. I use a simple for-mat. I share an interesting story and then use it to teach a Biblical principle. Below is one of those articles.

According to The Guinness Book of World Records, the toughest tongue twister is 'The sixth sick sheik's sixth sheep's sick'. However, researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology claim there could be an even tougher one. Dr. Stefanie Shattuck-Hufnagel and her team assert that 'pad kid poured curd pulled cold' is the toughest tongue twister that has ever been created. They said it is so difficult, that when people were asked to repeat it rapidly ten times, they became so tongue-tied that they stopped speaking alto-gether!

As to which one of these two is the toughest tongue twister, you can make that decision. But these two phrases are not the hardest ones to say. It has been my experience that there are at least three other phrases people have greater trouble uttering. These are: “I’m Sor-ry,” “I’m wrong,” and “Please forgive me.” Why is it so hard to admit wrong in our lives, to acknowledge the hurt we’ve caused others or to humbly beseech another to forgive that wrong and hurt? Why is it we would rather a problem grow, love die and troubled relationships become irreconcilable, than look another in the eye and say “I’m sorry” for an ill-spoken word or wounding action? You know the an-swer as well as I – It’s the villain called “Pride” that keeps a lock upon the heart so that the words of remorse cannot flow from the tongue! (Proverbs 16:18; 29:23).

In our society a lot of sin has been politicized. We won’t mention any specific sins in this article, but I’m sure you can come up with a few of this variety in your mind. When something becomes politi-cized, it seems to change our thinking on the subject a bit. We seem to be influenced by outside factors more. What this leads to is an acceptance of sin or even becoming an encourager of sin.

Can you imagine that, a Christian encouraging or supporting sin? I’m not describing someone who is not a Christian, but some of us who are children of His, supporting what he has called unrighteous. This is the kind of thing that happens when we want to politicize instead of live righteous lives. You will often hear the phrase “a sin is a sin” or “there are no big sins or little sins”. Brothers and sisters these phrases simply aren’t true. There are sins worse than others sins, they are called unrepentant sins. The bible, from the begin-ning of the church (Acts 2), has taught us to repent of sins. If we encourage others to live in sin or teach that “because we are all sinners it’s okay”, we have sent someone down a dead end road as far as eternity is concerned.

We often use the term “we are all sinners” as a crutch. While not perfect, we are called to avoid sin at all costs. In Romans 6, start-ing in verse 1, the Bible says this: “What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound?

2 Certainly not! How

shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? 3 Or do you not know

that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were bap-tized into His death?

4 Therefore we were buried with Him through

baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.”

We avoid sin and teach that all should avoid sin. It’s not judging, it’s living a lifestyle that is acceptable to God. How can we repent if we accept something as “ok”, especially within the church. Unre-pentant sin leads to a separation from God for all of eternity. So let’s not politicize sin, let’s recognize it for what it is and not lead others towards it by accepting it on worldly terms.

We look forward to seeing you Sunday!

In Him, Todd

Ruth and family would like to thank the Church for their kind thoughts, deeds and prayers during the recent hospitalization and passing of her beloved Charles. Many were involved in comforting, transport-ing and otherwise aiding Ruth and are too numerous

to mention by name. The service was wonderful, especially the beautiful congregational singing led by Matt and Phillip’s spot-on thoughts and comments. The Hartselle congregation is a special group and Charles loved you all very much. Again we thank you.
