eb of vloed is.

Navy intercepts 12 Vietnamese fishing boats, arrests 108

Royal Thai Navy patrol ships arrested 108 Vietnamese fishermen illegally piloting a dozen boats in the upper Gulf of Thailand. Vice Adm. Chumpol Wongwekhin, director of Thailand Maritime Enforcement Coordinating Center Region 1, led the three-day mission in the waters between Koh Samet and Koh Chuang Sept. 15. The HTMS Chao Phrya, HTMS Sirirath and HTMS Thimuang, along with two Seahawk helicopters, intercepted the Vietnamese boats.

The Navy cooperated in the operation with the Eastern Gulf of Thailand Fishing Management Center in Rayong,

Rayong Department of Marine and Coastal Resources, Rayong Marine Police, and Customs Department after having received complaints from Thai fishermen regarding Vietnamese fishing boats trespassing in Thai waters.

Enforcement officers from Royal Thai Navy patrol ships move in and secure a Vietnamese fishing boat caught illegally fishing in Thai waters. About 20 small boats were spotted, but eight managed to escape the much larger and faster Thai ships.

All the Vietnamese crewmen received health checks and were transferred to Department of Marine and Coastal Resources to be processed for deportation. Source : Pattaya Mail

The man who helped lifeboats go 50% faster A young Northern Ireland man’s passion for all things nautical has led to him playing a leading role in designing the Royal National Lifeboat Institution’s new all-weather rescue craft. Peter Eyre’s hull design for the new Shannon Class lifeboat makes it up to 50% faster than the existing design. It’s estimated the new fleet of boats will rescue 56,000 people and save 1,500 lives over their service.

The 28-year-old’s love of boats stems from a childhood sailing on Lough Swilly, close to his home in Londonderry. This led to a University Degree in Ship Science at Southampton and then to a job with the RNLI. He started working on his hull design in his own time four years ago, but when his boss saw what he was doing, it became his full-time job.

Christened the Shannon Class after the Irish river, the vessel is the first modern RNLI all-weather lifeboat to be powered by water jets, not propellers. More than 50 new Shannons will need to be built within the next 10 years to replace the older classes of lifeboat and the former Foyle & Londonderry College pupil was a vital part of the team that came up with the new design.

Four years after Peter’s original design, the prototype of the Shannon is undergoing sea trials around the coasts of the UK and Ireland, with the first lifeboat going into service in 2013. Work on the next generation of boats has already begun and these will be operational first in England. Peter hopes it will not be too long before there are at least one or two patrolling the waters around Ireland.

He said: “I have always been a sailor, right from when I was a boy sailing on Lough Swilly. When I was 14, racing on our family yacht our mast broke and we had to be assisted by the RNLI, so I suppose you can say I have experienced every aspect of the work the RNLI do. “I am so proud to have been involved in this project. The Shannon is designed to go 50% faster than the boats it is replacing and is designed to be able to launch in very rough weather.

“This is important because the RNLI set out in all weathers including extreme conditions so this will help keep the crews, who are all volunteers, safe during rescue missions. “I’m chuffed it was named after a river in Ireland. I think the moment it first goes out on a service will be the pinnacle. My parents will be so proud. “It’s a great legacy to be a part of, especially at this age. I think it will sink in gradually. When the first life is saved I think that’s when it will really hit home.”

The Shannon Class is expected to make up almost a third of the RNLI’s all-weather lifeboat fleet and once rolled out all RNLI all-weather lifeboats will be capable of at least 25 knots. Owen Medland, RNLI Training Divisional Inspector for Ireland, added: “This is the first time that the RNLI has named a class of lifeboat after an Irish river — which is very fitting considering that Peter has been so fundamental in its design. “All of the crews who have tested the new lifeboat have been thrilled with its speed, manoeuvrability and crew safety features. “We don’t yet know which Northern Ireland lifeboat stations will receive a Shannon class lifeboat, but the Shannon is designed to replace the majority of Mersey and some Tyne class lifeboats. We look forward to seeing the Shannon here.” Source : belfasttelegraph

ClassNK has announced that its register surpassed the 8000 ship milestone, totaling 8036 ships of 206,927,557 gross tons as of the end of August 2012. The Society’s register topped 6000 ships in 1989 and reached 7000 in 2008. With the total number of registered ships topping 8000 vessels this August, more than 1000 ships have been added to the ClassNK Register in just the past 4 years alone. According to IHS Fairplay data, ClassNK is not only the leading classification society for bulk carriers with nearly three times as many bulk carriers on it register as the next IACS member society, but is also the leading class society in IACS for tankers and second for container carriers in terms of ship numbers. In addition to newly built vessels, the large number of vessels transferred from other classification societies has propelled ClassNK’s rapid growth in recent years, and ClassNK remains dedicated to continual improvement of its services to maintain the strong support and trust it has earned from the maritime industry. Marine training in worldwide demand South Tyneside College’s reputation as a world-leading marine training centre is set to be further enhanced after the completion of a major £1.5m upgrade to its state-of-the-art simulation facilities. A hi-tech purpose-built Marine School at its South Shields campus, which boasts completely new equipment, is set to open on October 24. At its core is a full-mission bridge projection system which includes Kongsberg K-Line type consoles, complemented by new full-mission engine room consoles, which include touch screen control and Kongsberg Big-View software. There is also a new eight-bridge Kongsberg desktop bridge simulation suite, integrated to VTS, and a digital CCTV recording and playback system operating throughout which will allow staff to monitor the non-technical skills of students. The development has been welcomed by Gary Hindmarch, deputy principal, maritime and higher education, who said: “Demand for marine simulation training has continued apace and it is vital our facilities are the best anywhere in the world. They are class-leading. “All ranks of maritime personnel train at the college, from cadets to officers, masters and pilots. In the safety of a simulated environment, they experience emergencies and develop the skills they need to build a broad range of knowledge. “We have overhauled every aspect of our simulation system’s performance and capabilities to enable us to meet all future training needs and demands in a highly specialist, global marketplace.” Further investment, with partner Safety Technology, will see the opening of a climbing tower which will allow working at height to those aiming to work in the offshore wind market. Existing facilities include an environmental pool used for survival training, an eight-seat helicopter escape module, and offshore platform boat transfer simulator. The marine school has also launched courses in ice navigation. Source: The Journal

Baltic index rises as capesize rates improve The Baltic Exchange's main sea freight index, which tracks rates for ships carrying dry commodities, rose on higher capesize activity. The main index, which factors in the average daily earnings of capesize, panamax, supramax and handysize dry bulk transport vessels, rose 22 points or 2.95 percent to 766 points. The Baltic's capesize index rose 73 points to 1,621 points. Average daily earnings for the vessels, which usuallytransport 150,000 tonne cargoes such as iron ore and coal, were up 11.5 percent or $829 to $8,039, the highest in over eight months. Iron ore shipments account for around a third of seaborne volumes on the larger capesizes, and brokers said price developments remained a key factor for dry freight. Prices of the iron ore steadied on Friday in limited activity as China winds down ahead of a week-long holiday next week. Shanghai steel futures edged up, tracking other commodities and equities amid optimism over economic reforms unveiled by debt-hit Spain and for China to take more steps to boost its slowing economy. "With Golden Week upcoming in China next week, the market is likely to remain relatively quiet," Arctic Securities analyst Erik Nikolai Stavseth said in a note. "Some of the activity seen in the market over the past two weeks have been traders moving ahead of the holidays and have contributed to higher fixture levels," he said. The panamax index rose 7 points to 425 points after having fallen for five straight days, with average daily earnings for the vessels, which typically transport

60,000-70,000 tonne cargos of coal or grains, up $53 to $3,389. Average daily earnings for handysize ships were down $44 to $6,893, while those of supramax ships were down $66 to $8,676. The overall index has fallen 1.03 percent since last week, and 55.92 percent so far this year. Source: Reuters

CCB will not abandon shipping, vice general manager says

China Construction Bank (CCB) will continue to support the shipping industry, said Vice General Manager Zhang Xiangqun of CCB at the International Shipping Strategic Development Forum, held in Shanghai last Friday. “While some banks might withdraw from the market temporarily. We do not think it is possible to withdraw. The industry is a very cyclical one and we will never abandon it.” Zhang said. CCB will be focused on providing finance to innovative companies with growth potential, such as those leveraging the current boom in the LNG industry. Zhang pointed to increasing port volume figures as an indicator of growth amid the downturn. The market for oil tankers will bounce back due to long term growth in crude oil demand, he said. AIRCRAFT carrier HMS Illustrious will leave Portsmouth this morning (Monday) for a major show of strength in the Mediterranean. Seven navy helicopters will land on the 22,000-tonne warship early in the morning before she sets sail at 1.30pm. Lusty is being deployed as part of the UK’s Response Force Task Group (RFTG) which is on a footing to respond to an international crisis if required. It’s the ship’s first major deployment since returning to frontline operations after a £40m refit in 2010.

After training off Cornwall next week, she will meet up with 12 UK warships to play a starring role in war games with the French navy in the Med. More than 3,000 sailors and Royal Marines are taking part in Exercise Cougar which begins later this month. The navy stressed the exercise is not in response to the war in Syria or diplomatic tensions with Iran. A spokesman said: ‘The Cougar exercise is long-planned, annual deployment, and not in response to any current world events.’ The RFTG was created in 2010 as a roving force to respond to unexpected conflicts or events.

Last year, it was called into action off the coast of Libya. Defence secretary Philip Hammond said: ‘The UK’s Response Force Task Group is a major force forming part of our contingent capability, ready and able to respond to emerging events worldwide. ‘This deployment will see it work alongside our allies at a time when international co-operation and joint operations are more important than ever before.’ Lusty will link up with French carrier FS Charles de Gaulle in a step towards a Anglo-French force by 2016.

Charles de Gaulle’s flight deck will be the launch pad for Super Étendard and Rafale jets – offering a glimpse of how the RFTG should look once the UK’s new Queen Elizabeth carriers enter service with Lightening II jets from 2020.

The training will be directed by Commodore Paddy McAlpine and Brigadier Martin Smith from HMS Bulwark Cdre McAlpine said: ‘Cougar 12 provides us with a superb opportunity to rekindle our amphibious capability after a prolonged period when our focus has been on operations elsewhere.’ Source : The News

Navy ships return home Navy frigate Te Kaha and fleet replenishment ship Endeavour returned home today after four months taking part in Asia-Pacific security exercises. "The crew have all worked extremely hard over the last four months, and are looking forward to spending some time with family and friends," Endeavour commanding officer Commander Keith Robb said.

The ships took part in the major Rimpac exercise off Hawaii, alongside some of the Pacific's biggest navies, including those from the United States, Japan, South Korea, Canada and Australia. Te Kaha finished first in the specialist warfare skills and knowledge competition, second in sport, and third in gunnery. Endeavour's activities included the pumping of over two million litres of fuel in one day and the completion of 51 replenishments at sea - well above normal, the Defence Force said. While away, the ships also took part in the Pacific Bridge exercise in the Western Pacific as well as Exercise Kakadu off the coast of Darwin, where Te Kaha led a task force of ships from other navies.

On the way to Rimpac, Endeavour supplied diesel fuel to Penrhyn Island in the north of the Cook Islands group, guaranteeing the island was able to maintain domestic utilities and power generation. Source : Fairfax NZ News

Only one nuclear cruiser to be modernized Russia throw outs plan to modernize all of the country’s laid-up nuclear cruisers. Only the Northern Fleet’s “Admiral Nakhimov” will get a RUB 50 billion rebuilding, the others will be scrapped, Barents Observer reported. Three years ago Russia announced that it planned to rebuild all the three Soviet nuclear cruisers “Admiral Nakhimov” and “Admiral Ushakov” of the Northern Fleet and “Admiral Lazarev” of the Pacific Fleet. Today, Russia has only one nuclear powered battle cruiser in active service, "Pyotr Veliky", based in the Northern Fleet. This vessel was taken into service in 1996 and is today considered to be the fleet’s flagship.

The 252 meters long and 24,300 tons heavy Kirov-class cruisers are the largest and heaviest surface combatant warships in the world. As “Admiral Ushakov” and “Admiral Lazarev” are considered to be beyond repair, they will be scrapped, a source in the military complex says to Izvestiya. The third one, “Admiral Nakhimov” will be modernized at the Sevmash Shipyard in Severodvinsk. The cost of rebuilding and modernizing the vessel is estimated to some RUB 50 billion (€1.24 billion).

Experts doubt the cost efficiency of modernization: “For the same amount of money we could buy a new vessel like the French helicopter carrier “Mistral”, Andrey Frolov, editor of the Military Export magazine says to Izvestiya. “These huge vessels are vulnerable to modern weapons. They were built in Soviet times and even after modernization they will last maximum 15 years”, he explains. Also the Northern Fleet’s command is skeptical to the plans. “Admiral Nakhimov” will demand a large crew, and it is not clear where these people are to be found: “Such a large ship

Brazil Shipbuilder OSX Says Has Orders Worth More Than $31 Billion

Brazilian shipbuilding, leasing and oil services company OSX Brasil SA part of billionaire Eike Batista's EBX Group, said it has firm orders for vessels worth more than $31 billion. More than $30 billion-worth of the orders are to build craft for oil producer OGX Petroleo SA (OCXP3.BR), a sister company within the EBX Group, said an OSX official at Acu port, where the company is building a shipyard. Other customers include Brazil's state-owned oil and gas company Petroleo Brasileiro SA (PBR, PETR4.BR), Kingfish and Malaysia's Sapura Group, OSX said. So far, OSX has built a Floating, Production, Storage and Offloading, or FPSO, vessel in South Korea which is leased to OGX for use at the oil producer's first production field in Brazil's Campos Basin. Construction of further FPSOs are underway in Singapore and the company has 23 orders stretching to around 2017, according to the official.

OSX will start building vessels at its own shipyard at Acu, in Rio de Janeiro state, in first-quarter 2013, the official said. The unit at Acu port, designed to be the largest shipbuilding unit in the Americas, involves an investment of 3 billion reais ($1.47 billion). The company has contracted financing of BRL2.7 billion for the venture from Brazil's development bank BNDES, Caixa Economica Federal and the country's Merchant Marine Fund. The 3.2 million square-meter shipyard, in which Korea's Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. Ltd. holds 10%, will have an initial steelcutting capacity of 180,000 metric tons a year, which may be expanded to as much as 400,000 tons a year, the company said. "If the company is able to buy steel locally, we would make $1.3 billion savings," on current orders, the official said. Two steelmaking projects slated for Acu port are still at the environmental studies and licensing phase. OSX plans to train around 3,100 local workers to build ships and is aiming for a 70% local content in the vessels it builds, the official said. Source: Dow Jones

Atwood Oceanics Orders Third Ultra-Deepwater Drillship

An Atwood Oceanics subsidiary contracts with DSME Korea for an ultra-deepwater drillship to be named 'Atwood Admiral' The Atwood Admiral is expected to be delivered by March 31, 2015 at a total cost, including two blowout preventers ("BOPs"), project management, drilling and handling tools and spares, of approximately $635 million. The design of the Atwood Admiral will be identical to the previously ordered Atwood Advantage and Atwood Achiever – all three are DP-3 dynamically-positioned, dual derrick ultra-deepwater drillships rated to operate in water depths up to 12,000 feet and drill to a depth of up to 40,000 feet. The Atwood Admiral will also offer two seven-ram BOPs, three 100-ton knuckle boom cranes, a 165-ton active heave "tree-running" knuckle boom crane, and accommodations for up to 200 persons. Rob Saltiel, the company's President and CEO, commented, "We are pleased to continue our growth strategy through the exercising of our option with DSME shipyard, and we look forward to the Atwood Admiral joining our high-specification, ultra-deepwater drilling fleet. This rig's state-of-the-art capabilities, and the synergies that result from adding a third drillship based on the same design, make this a solid platform for extending Atwood's market position in ultra-deepwater drilling." This order comprises the execution of the option that was set to expire on September 30, 2012. In connection with the exercise, the company has also secured an option to construct a fourth ultra-deepwater drillship at a similar cost to the Atwood Admiral and with an expected delivery in December 2015, which requires commitment by June 30, 2013. At this time, the company has made no determination as to whether the option will be exercised. Source: Atwood Oceanics

Shipbreakers set for good sail: Icra The domestic ship-breaking industry is expected to benefit from the lull in global shipping activity caused by excess supply, says a report by the ratings agency Icra. "The domestic ship-breaking yards should remain busy in the medium term as the global shipping market fundamentals are unlikely to materially improve," the agency said. The report attributes the optimism to the heavy orders placed in the period leading to 2008 global credit crisis and the resultant slowdown in charters once the global recession began, which led to more ships being available for dismantling annually than in the past 20 years.

According to an estimate, the country's shipyards dismantled 400 ships last fiscal, Icra said, without giving any outlook for the same. Icra, which has 25 ship-breakers under rating, said the combined revenues of these companies more than doubled to Rs 900 crore in FY11 from Rs 400 crore in FY09. However, it also warned about the rising competition from China threatening the dominance of domestic ship-breaking yards, concentrated in Alang and Sosiya in Gujarat and Maharashtra and Bengal. Ship-breaking yards in China and some other Southeast countries of late have been increasingly gaining a foothold in the industry.

Till now, the domestic ship-breaking industry, which grew manifold after the 1991 liberalisation, has benefited from favourable geographic conditions like wind and tidal movements. Additionally, any further rupee depreciation which has been witnessing high volatility since the past one year or so, sliding steel prices and increase in interest costs, will be some of the key risks for the segment, it said. In the long term, the over capacity in domestic steel production, which may pull down steel prices, is also a risk for the segment, the agency report said. The regulatory risks for the segment, which has for long been a target of multiple judicial, governmental and non-governmental agencies for pollution and employees' health-related issues, continue to be a detrimental factor, it said.

"The Supreme Court recently passed an order requiring stricter implementation of ship-breaking norms in view of the environmental and health hazards. This as well as any other proposed regulation could entail events-based risks for the players and may affect their competitiveness," Icra senior vice-president and corporate ratings co-head K Ravichandran, said in the note. OLDIE – FROM THE SHOEBOX

The above photo made by Harry Stott Instantly strikes the Rotterdam Shipping Club as the Van Nievelt Goudriaan ship "Alhena". This is the story of a modest but interesting freighter - a vessel with quite a history ! Construction began in Amsterdam in September 1939 as "Algol". She was launched in June 1940, one month after the Germans occupied the Netherlands.

Further construction was deliberately slowed down and the Germans seized the vessel by October 1941. It took till 1943 before they moved her from the yard. Originally she supplied the German troops which had occupied the British Channel islands. But this become impossible after February 1944 when the Allies obtained air superiority.

(The lack of supplies eventually caused famine on the Channel Islands till the surrender of the German troops in 1945) She was then renamed "Sperrbrechter 29". Such vessels preceded German convoys along the mine-infested coastal areas. A very hazardous practice ! To increase buoyancy, the holds were filled to capacity with empty drums. But a lot of "Sperrbrecher" sank nevertheless after having hit an allied mine.

The "Algol" survived, with 25 hits by mines, and was recovered heavily damaged at Wilhelmshafen. She was towed to Rotterdam by the Dutch tug "Zwarte Zee" where she arrived on 19th. Oct. 1945. Repairs were carried out but shortage of materials caused further delays and she was finally delivered to VNG on April 26th. 1947, 6 years behind schedule.

She plied the regular VNG routes from North West Europe to South America. In Jan. 1959 she grounded in the river Scheldt and was heavily damaged. After repairs she resumed service and become the 25.000nd. vessel to arrive in Rotterdam on Nov. 25, 1964. One month later her arrival in Rotterdam was less glorious when she collided head-on with the Norwegian tanker Sigvik just passing Hook of Holland. Further repairs followed and eventually she was sold to the Greeks in March 1968. Renamed "Alda" she served for another 6 years until she was laid up in Chalkis in April 1972. Eventually she was scrapped in Kaohsiung in July 1973. Tekst : Rob Smith
