SRINAGAR, July 9: Dr.Shehnaz Ganai, Member of theLegislative Council, called onN.N Vohra, Governor, here atthe Raj Bhavan today and dis-cussed with the Governor vari-ous matters relating to the gov-ernance and development of theState.

Shantmanu, Chief ElectoralOfficer (CEO), J&K, called onGovernor and apprised himabout the functioning of theCEO's office, particularly thevarious measures initiated forcreating awareness among peo-ple about their "Right To Vote",and the continuous process ofupdating of electoral rolls andother important activities.

Dr. Aziz Hajini, Secretary,JK Academy of Art, Culture andLanguages also called onGovernor and briefed him aboutthe activities of the Academywhich he is planning to initiatein the fields of indigenous art,literature, languages etc. withinand outside the State.

He also apprised theGovernor about the progress sofar achieved in regard to therenovation of Abhinav Theatre,Tehzeeb Mahal and TagoreHall.

The Governor urged Dr.Hajini to strive vigorously inpursuing the objectives of theAcademy in promoting qualityand excellence in all its activi-ties and wished him high suc-

cess in all his endeavours.Meanwhile, Dr. Pradeep

Kumar Sharma, Vice-Chancellor, Sher-e-KashmirUniversity of AgriculturalSciences and Technology-Jammu (SKUAST-J), called onGovernor and briefed him aboutthe status of admissions to theunder-graduate and post-gradu-ate courses; the pressing aca-demic and administrative issuesrelating to the institution; andthe difficulties arising from theinadequacy of financialresources.

The Governor advised theVice Chancellor to take sus-tained initiatives for boostingresearch and extension activi-ties; securing visible improve-ment in the production and pro-ductivity levels and ensuringefficient functioning of all theKVKs under the University.

rains which lashed the Jammuregion and some areas ofPahalgam Base Camp in Kashmirvalley early this morning have not

dampened the spirit of Amarnathpilgrims as 16,410 yatris drawnfrom different parts of countrypaid obeisance at holy cave on theeighth day of darshan today.

Thousands of yatris from dif-ferent parts of the country continueto report the State daily for theironwards journey to holy cave sur-rounded by glaciers in deepHimalyas in South Kashmir dis-trict of Anantnag.

According to an officialspokesman, 16,410 pilgrims per-formed darshan at holy cave todaywith this the total number of pil-grims visiting the cave shrine sincethe first batch of yatris left theBhagwati Nagar Yatri Niwas hereon July 1 has touched 1,21, 328.

The spokesman said there istotal hustle and bustle on yatra

tracks and on twin base camps ofNunwan –Pahalgam and Baltalwhere thousands of pilgrims reportdaily. He said 5958 pilgrims leftfrom Baltal to holy cave early thismorning for darshan while 1055

left by air. Besides 2385 pilgrimsleft from Nunwan Base camp forholy cave this morning.

He said the weather on both thetracks remained cloudy todaywhile it drizzled at Pahalgam in themorning however yatra continuessmoothly. One yatri identified asSuresh Jatav, 32, S/o Nakzi Ramof Ferozpora, Indore MP died atholy cave due to cardiac arrest.His body has been kept in mortu-ary near Cave shrine. With thisone more death, the toll in ongoingyatra has touched five, he added.

Meanwhile some yatris com-plained lack of facilities both atBaltal and Nunwan base camps.They said that Guest House atBaltal has no basic facilities andstill Rs 1200 are charged from peryatri for one night haltage. The

yatris at Jammu Haat also com-plained problems saying there areno langer facilities when the pil-grims are standing in long queuesfrom 4am to 2pm or more. “TheGovernment should open langerin Jammu Haat as hundreds of pil-grims visit there daily for registra-tion and they have to remain hun-gry till the registration processfinishes for the day’’, said RamKumar a pilgrim from RatlamMP.

The Additional DC Jammu,Dr Piyush Singla who is also theNodal Officer for yatra said that1714 token slips for almost 3000pilgrims have been issued forJammu Haat today. Only theseyatris who have been given theslips will be registered for nexttwo days and not the extra yatra asthe quota of 2500 pilgrims atJammu Haat has been alreadyexhausted.

Dr Singla said the unregisteredyatris coming from other parts ofcountry should not approach forregistration at Jammu Haat duringnext two days.

A fresh batch of 1885 pilgrimsleft the Bhagwati Nagar YatriNiwas here, today under tightsecurity arrangements in a caval-cade of 53 vehicles for holy cave.They included 1494 male, 262female, 29 children and 100Sadhus.

However these pilgrims werestopped at Seri Udhampur,Panthal and Dangoo due to landslides on National Highway. Laterthe NH was restored for traffic inthe afternoon and the yatris left forthe twin base camps.

Mr.Omar Abdullah spent time withthe family of Late Mir andhighlighted his contribution tothe party at crucial juncturesand said in his selfless serviceto the party we could drawinspiration to fight the battlefor the honor and dignity of theState and its people in presentcircumstances where politicalparties and leaders had back-tracked on their ideologies andpromises for the petty trap-pings of power.

Div Com discusses inclusion, exclusion of areas from new admn units

JAMMU July 9: In order toprevent overlapping and anom-alies to the jurisdiction of sec-toral/district officers with regardto new administrative units,Divisional CommissionerJammu, Dr. Pawan Kotwal, todaydiscussed inclusion and exclusionof villages /areas from newlycarved out administrative unitswith Deputy Commissioners ofPoonch, Doda, Ramban, Reasi,Samba and Kathua districtsthrough video conferencing.

Assistant CommissionerCentral, Sachin Dev Singhbesides other concerned officerswere also present on the occasion.

The DivisionalCommissioner asked the con-cerned Deputy Commissioner tosubmit a preliminary reportwithin a week's time regardingpresent status of pockets irra-tionally attached with the newadministrative units. In thisregard, he asked them to con-duct a thorough exercise withproper mapping of their respec-tive districts so that rationaliza-tion, resettlement of the samewith the originaltehsil/niabat/sub-division is

Electoral Rolls for ULB elections soon: CEOExcelsior CorrespondentSRINAGAR, July 9: Chief

Electoral Officer, Shantmanu todaydiscussed issues related to thepreparation of the electoral rolls tobe used for the elections to theUrban Local Bodies in the State.

The meeting was attended byDeputy Chief Electoral Officer,Rishpal Singh, Additional SIO J&K,Saleem Khan, Secretary SMCSrinagar, Hilal Ahmad Deewani andother officials of the ElectionsDepartment and MunicipalCorporation Srinagar besides repre-sentatives from the Roll Vendors ofthe department M/s TJ Enterprisesand M/s Comptech Pvt Ltd.

The Chief Election Officerasked the Additional SIO NICJ&K who is looking after theElectoral Roll ManagementSystem (ERMS) Project of theState to provide the updated data ofthe electoral rolls along with all thesupplements to the concerned ven-dors for printing of the electoralrolls. After printing, the rolls willbe provided to all the ElectoralRegistration Officers of theMunicipal Corporations / Councils/ Committees for polling stationswise and ward wise mapping. Thebifurcated electoral rolls will beagain printed and placed before theelectors as draft roll for the purposeof summary revision.

The Chief Electoral Officerstressed upon all the concernedofficials and non-officials to starttheir allotted work immediately sothat it is completed as per schedule.
