On a summer’s day, bees buzz from one flower to the next. They sip sweet nectar through a long, tube-shaped tongue. They flap their see-through wings.
The bee’s entire body is fuzzy. It is covered with millions of tiny hairs. Bees march across flowers. Pollen dust sticks to their hairy bodies. Their entire bodies can be covered in pollen, even their eyeballs!
Bees have combs and rakes on their bodies. They use these to brush the pollen into a pouch on their legs. They visit flower after flower. As they do, they stuff pollen into their pouches. Bees can carry their body weight in pollen!
Yet, not all pollen ends up in the pouches. Some stays stuck on the bees’ hairy bodies. Then, this pollen falls off onto the flower. The plant uses the pollen to make fruit and seeds. Fruit and seeds turn into new plants. Without bees, many plants wouldn’t be able to make new plants.
Back at the hive, the bees mix the pollen and nectar together to make a special treat called bee bread. They also make thick, golden honey.

In 1848, a spark of gold changed history. It all started with a man in California. He was working to build a sawmill on a river. Suddenly, he saw something shiny in the water. He had found bits of gold!
Word spread about the gold in the river. People came from all over the country, hoping to find gold and get rich. Thousands of people came and new towns grew to support them. At first, people took gold out of the water. Then, they began mining the land. They used machines to dig for gold deep in the ground.
Years passed. Most of the gold was gone and the mining had badly hurt the land. Still, people kept going west in search of more gold. As a result, the state of California grew. Today, it has more people than any other U.S. state.
Lee el texto. Luego, responde las preguntas en la página siguiente.
