Declarer attacked the likely entry to the South handby leading a spade to his queen, but Harris ducked– the key play. He followed with the 3, which wasa reverse Smith Echo saying that he wanted partnerto continue clubs when he got in. A second spadewent to Morgan’s king, and he did as requested – hereturned the ♣J to partner’s ace. Harris drove outthe ♣Q by returning the ♣10, showing that hisentry was in spades.

Declarer led a spade himself, and Harris won tocash his two long clubs. North’s first discard wasthe ♦9 – good diamonds – so Harris switched to hissingleton diamond to partner’s jack, and declarerducked. North continued with the ♦K to declarer’sace, and declarer tried the heart finesse. Morganwon his king and cashed his good diamond to set1NT two tricks.

Slam doubleAlfredo Versace, a member of George Jacobs

Vanderbilt squad, found the right opening lead onthis deal from the final match against RichardSchwartz’s team. Versace was playing withLorenzo Lauria against David Berkowitz and LarryCohen.

overcalled 1♥. Berkowitz and Cohen play that 1♠here would show the minors, so Berkowitz doubledto show spade length.

Cohen rebid 2♠ to show a maximum (incontext) with four-card spade support. Berkowitzthen hit upon the clever idea of splintering in a suitin which he actually held two fast losers. This tacticis sometimes useful not only in possibly finding outsomething important about partner’s hand, but alsoin possibly getting the opponents off to the wrongopening lead.

Cohen rebid 4♠, but Berkowitz inferred fromthis (correctly) that Cohen had signed off in gamebecause he had concentrated club values. Thatsuggested, in turn, that there was less chance forCohen to hold wasted diamond values, soBerkowitz jumped to the slam.

Lauria, however, doubled hoping to get a heartruff, and the spotlight turned to Versace. Should helead his long suit first or should he try to cash the♦A to get a look at dummy? The ♦A seems rathertempting, considering that the opponents havesplintered in clubs, but Versace eventually settledon the heart lead. Lauria ruffed and cashed the ♣Afor down one. At the other table, North–Southdeclared 4♠, making six, and an 11-IMP pickup forthe Jacobs team.

Dodging bulletsOn this deal from the quarterfinal round of the

Zia doubled in fourth seat to show values andthis was passed around to Rosenberg, North.Rosenberg pondered this for some time as Cohennervously observed what part of the bid boxRosenberg’s next call might come from. If it were apass card, Cohen was probably looking at a phonenumber-sized penalty. Eventually, however,Rosenberg produced the 3♣ card, and East–Westwere off the hook.

The effect of the mini-notrump was to gobbleup valuable bidding space for North–South. Zia andRosenberg arrived in 5♦, and Berkowitz hit on theexcellent lead of the ♦J.

Zia won in hand, cashed the ♠A and ruffed aspade. A club was ruffed in the closed hand andanother spade ruff followed. A club ruff was next, followed by the ♦K and a spade to Berkowitz’sking, on which Cohen pitched his remaining club, the key play since Berkowitz would otherwise havebeen endplayed. After East’s club discard,Berkowitz safely exited with a club, ruffed byCohen and now the defense had to come to a hearttrick as well to defeat the contract by one trick.

At the other table, North-South declared andmade 3NT for plus 600 and a 12-IMP pickup.

Looking at the 3–4–3–3 East hand, it seems abit hard to believe that the key to success on thedeal would depend on getting a club ruff!

Sometimes the easiest problems come indifficult guesses. Here the key to the deal is thatdeclarer surely has three clubs and did not want toplay for a club ruff in dummy. McNulty may be 80, but she’s going strongAgnes McNulty may be 80 years old, but that

isn’t stopping her from trying to be the RegionalMaster of the Year. She already has won 106 pointsthis year and is well ahead in her category.

She’s getting to more tournaments these days –her daughter, Donna Rodwell, is making sure ofthat. Her son-in-law, Eric Rodwell, is proud of heraccomplishments in bridge, pinochle and poker –her three favorite games.

McNulty lives in Clearwater Fl in the winterand Minoqua WI in the summer. She usually playsonly once a week when she’s up North, but herdaughter “drags me to every sectional and regionalwhen I’m down South.” She also follows Eric whenhe plays in world championships. “I’ve watchedhim play in Paris, Bermuda and Lille.”

She has been playing bridge all her life, and shediscovered duplicate about 40 years ago. “Shetaught me how to play while I was pregnant 35years ago,” said Donna. She played golf regularlyuntil two years ago.

An interesting sidelight: Donna and Eric gotmarried on McNulty’s birthday on April 21, 1995.

Why does McNulty like bridge so much? “It’sa challenge,” she said.

Larry Cohen, David Berkowitz, Steve Robinsonand Peter Boyd. Schwartz was trying for his thirdwin in the contest. He was captain of the winningsquads in 1997 (which also featured Robinson andBoyd) and 1998.

The Schwartz team had eliminated thedefending champions led by Nick Nickell in adramatic semifinal match. Their momentumseemed to carry through the first part of yesterday’sfinal, but Jacobs blunted their initiative by winningthe third quarter by 24 IMPs.

An unusual endingBy Barry Rigal

This deal separated the men from the boys. After South opened an impeccable weak 2♠, theauction continued 3♥ by West – now what?

Board 22 ♠ K 5Dlr: East ♥ 9 3Vul: E-W ♦ Q 9 8 5

♣ A J 10 8 4♠ 10 6 ♠ 8 4 3♥ A K 10 8 7 5 ♥ J 4 2♦ A 10 ♦ K 7 6 3♣ K 3 2 ♣ Q 7 6

♠ A Q J 9 7 2♥ Q 6♦ J 4 2♣ 9 5

The North players who trusted their partnersbid 3♠, and the East players who trusted theiropponents and their partner bid 4♥.

Try the defense to 4♥. The North players whodid not trust their partner that much led a trump.Declarer would fool around a bit but would godown when South led clubs when in with hisspades.

The North players who did trust their partner(too much) led the ♠K and a spade to partner forpartner to lead a third spade. West ruffed with the10, drew three rounds of trumps and reached thisending:

♠ —♥ —♦ Q 9 8 5♣ A J 10

♠ — ♠ —♥ 7 5 ♥ —♦ A 10 ♦ K 7 6 3♣ K 3 2 ♣ Q 7 6

♠ J 9♥ —♦ J 4 2♣ 9 5

The next-to-last trump catches North in aruffing squeeze – whichever minor he pitches canbe established for an extra trick. If South overtakesthe ♠K at trick one to lead the ♣9 and Northremembers to duck and not try to give his partner aruff, the contract can still be set, but that wouldcertainly be nice defense.

Sid Lorvan, who won the two-session pairevent, found the play as declarer to make 4♥.

A time to rememberDonna Lisle and Andrew Hart of Rancho

Cordova CA were married Thursday evening herein Reno. On Friday evening they won the 0-5 Pairs.“Winning was the second happiest moment of theweek for me,” said Donna. They will treasure thetrophies they won as event victors.

Now they are Mr. And Mrs. Andrew Hart, 0-5champions.

Second in the Women’s Pairs were CynthiaBalderson and Carole Miner.

Two more greatNABCs this year

Reno 2004 was a great tournament, but the nexttwo NABCs no doubt will rival Reno.

New York is going to be the host for theSummer NABC from July 8-18. This will mark thefirst time since 1974 that New York will be the sitefor a North American championship. Special hotelrates have been arranged for this tournament. Therates, $159 plus tax, are far below the average costof hotel rooms in New York City.

New York has been a center of attention for thepast couple of years. Here’s your chance tocombine some sightseeing with bridge.

The Fall NABC will be special too. It will takeplace in Orlando from Nov. 18-28. The ACBL firstvisited Orlando in 1993, and it was an instantsuccess. The area has good hotels, wonderfulscenery, and lots of things to do in your spare time.Disneyworld and Universal both are there – greatplaces to have a good time.

(1) Precision, could be short.(2) Jacoby Transfer(3) “I like diamonds”

Cubley made a strange 1NT overcall of 1♦ –16 points but 7-2-2-2 distribution. Then, when hispartner started a transfer sequence, he just passed!“I had good trump support,” he said afterward.

He won the club opening lead, cashed the tophearts and ruffed a heart with the ♦9, setting up thesuit – but where’s his entry? He led the ♦K andWest fell from grace – he took his ace. Then he fellfurther from grace when he returned a seconddiamond to the 10! Now Cubley was able to discardboth of dummy’s spades on the good hearts for anunexpected score of plus 150.

Lee Stevens of Vanderhoof BC was on thewinning team in Bracket 3 of the MorningKnockouts, and that earned her enough points tobecome a Bronze Life Master.

Bracket 3 was quite special. Stevens’ partnerwas Alayne McFetridge of Vanderhoof, whobecame a Life Master the day before in the samebracket. In the final they competed again Elaine

Vona and Mary Miller who also became LifeMasters yesterday. Earlier in the bracketcompetition, they faced Bernel and Don Scott whoalso became Life Masters playing in this bracket.

Stevens’ other teammates were Jan Peltier andMary Schreidl. Our apologies for misspelling theirnames yesterday.
