ROCK FALL TO STAND AT WINSTAR IN 2016By Ian Tapp

Like a chip off the old block, Stonestreet Stables'

Rock Fall has emulated his sire, WinStar Farm's

Speightstown, all year. So what better place than

WinStar for him to begin his stud career in 2016?

Rock Fall, out of the Medaglia d'Oro mare Ren-

da, is currently riding a seven-race win streak that

includes the grade II True North Stakes—a race

Speightstown won in 2004—and the grade I Alfred G.

Vanderbilt Handicap—also Speightstown's in 2004.

Speightstown added that year's Breeders' Cup Sprint

(gr. I) and the champion sprinter title, two items still

on Rock Fall's agenda.

"Speightstown is on the verge of exploding as a

sire of sires with the high-quality colts he's had, but

Rock Fall is the one we've been waiting for to stand

alongside his sire," WinStar president Elliott Walden

said. "We love this colt, and everyone who's been

connected with Speightstown, including Todd Pletch-

er, has raved about how much Rock Fall reminds

them of his sire." BH

KENTUCKY OAKS WINNERS MEET IN SPINSTERBy Frank Angst

While winning the Juddmonte Spinster

Stakes (gr. I) carries prestige, the connec-

tions of the nine fillies and mares entered Oct.

4 at Keeneland are also thinking ahead to the

Oct. 30 Longines Breeders' Cup Distaff (gr. I) at

the Lexington track.

Sunday's field includes the past two Lon-

gines Kentucky Oaks (gr. I) winners: Winchell

Thoroughbreds homebred Untapable, who won

four grade I races including the Distaff to earn

champion 3-year-old filly honors last season;

and Brereton Jones' 2015 winner Lovely Maria.

With Keeneland hosting this year's Breed-

ers' Cup, the Spinster, which like the Distaff is

run at 1 1/8 miles, is an obvious prep. But it

already has a long history as a springboard with

a Spinster starter going on to win the Distaff 10

times. The record has been especially strong

when Keeneland's eight Polytrack years are not

considered; they didn't deliver a single Distaff

winner.

Following Keeneland's return to dirt last fall,

Spinster winner Don't Tell Sophia finished sec-

ond to Untapable in the Distaff. BH

INTERNATIONAL STARTERS PREP AT KEENELANDBy Frank Angst

As this year's Breeders' Cup host, Keene-

land likely picked up some internation-

al horses prepping for the World Champi-

onships. Keeneland vice president of racing

Rogers Beasley said the Lexington track

is thrilled to have eight European-trained

horses starting in its Oct. 3 graded stakes.

Those starters include three for Aidan

O'Brien: stakes winners Easter and Out-

standing, Galileo daughters trying the First

Lady (gr. IT) after finishing second and

third, respectively, in a group III stakes at

Gowran Park; and War Envoy, a group II-

placed War Front colt in the Shadwell Turf

Mile (gr. IT).

Also in the First Lady, trainer Thomas

Dascombe sends out Crowley's Law, third

in the Noble Damsel (gr. IIIT) at Belmont

Park. In the Turf Mile, Kevin Ryan enters

group III winner Kelinni, and Charles Hills

saddles two-time group III winner (twice

group I-placed) Dutch Connection.

After three straight synthetic track wins in Eng-

land, Godolphin Racing's Hawkbill, by Kitten's Joy,

makes his dirt debut for trainer Charlie Appleby in

the Claiborne Breeders' Futurity (gr. I). BH

UNBRIDLED DADDY INTRIGUES IN BOURBONBy Eric Mitchell

An oversubscribed field for the

$250,000 Dixiana Bourbon Stakes

(gr. IIIT) Oct. 4 at Keeneland includes four

juveniles who have finished in the money

in stakes.

The most intriguing stakes horse is

Unbridled Daddy, a homebred for John

Brunetti's Red Oak Stable. In his last start

the Scat Daddy colt finished third in the

grade II With Anticipation Stakes going 1

1/16 miles on the Saratoga turf. Unbri-

dled Daddy broke his maiden at Saratoga

on the grass in his second start, going

the same distance. Trained by Todd Pletcher, the colt

will be ridden by Javier Castellano.

The other stakes horses include Uncle Brennie (by

Uncle Mo), who took the Sunday Silence Stakes at Lou-

isiana Downs; Hot Ore (by Unusual Heat), second in

the Del Mar Juvenile Turf Stakes; and Don't Be So Salty

(by Tiz Wonderful), third in the Schenectady Stakes.

The Bourbon is a Breeders' Cup Challenge "Win and

You're In" race for the one-mile Juvenile Turf (gr. IT). BH

WINX, PEARLS STAR AT SPRING CARNIVALBy Tara Madgwick

Sydney's Spring Carnival reaches a crescendo

Oct. 3 with a program of nine stakes races at

Randwick, three of them group Is. While the group

I staying feature, the Metropolitan Handicap

(2,400 meters), comprises entirely imported gal-

lopers, the $1 million Epsom Handicap (1,600 me-

ters) and Flight Stakes (1,600 meters) for 3-year-

old fillies are packed with locally bred talent.

Quality mare Winx (by Street Cry) is a short-

priced favorite for the Epsom while progressive

gelding Sadler's Lake (High Chaparral), also from

the Chris Waller stable, is seen as her biggest

danger.

The Flight Stakes has attracted a field of up-

and-comers including many well-bred fillies in

good form. Having only started racing in August,

the Godolphin runner Pearls (Exceed And Excel)

has quickly lived up to her royal pedigree. She is

the fourth stakes winner for remarkable producer

Accessories (Singspiel), whose previous offspring

include multiple group I winners Helmet and Ep-

aulette. Pearls may well make a hat trick. BH

KENTUCKY DOWNS WINS PURSES BATTLEBy Ron Mitchell

If purses are the engine that drives Kentucky rac-

ing, then Kentucky Downs has the upper hand

over Churchill Downs in the battle for September,

making a good case that it should get more dates

in the future.

With its boutique all-turf meet comprising 48

races over four full cards and part of another,

Kentucky Downs paid out nearly $6.6 million in

purses, compared with Churchill's $3.6 million for

109 races during an 11-day meet.

Predictably, Churchill's handle of $33.2 million

was well above the $16.8 million at the smaller

Franklin, Ky., track. But racing's old econom-

ic model tying purses to handle does not work

anymore, with Kentucky Downs' purses fueled by

revenue from historical racing machines.

Despite its hefty purses Kentucky Downs'

efforts to add more dates have been rejected by

regulators who have sided with Churchill.

Before Turfway Park gave up September dates

to Churchill three years ago, it coordinated its rac-

es with Kentucky Downs during the month. BH

cludes 191 in-foal mares, 40 barren

mares, and eight out-of-training

fillies.

One of the most attractive

broodmare offerings is the 7-year-

old Dubawi mare Paperchain,

offered in foal to Japanese Horse of

the Year Orfevre. Consigned by Ida-

ka Farm, Paperchain is out of a full

sister to European champion and

sire Grand Lodge. Recently at the

JRHA foal sale, 13 weanlings from

Orfevre's first crop averaged ¥41 million ($331,266),

reflecting the stallion's marketplace popularity.

EMPIRE MAKER 'WAS NEVER FOR SALE'By Ian Tapp

Today's MarketWatch interview is with blood-

stock agent Emmanuel de Seroux, who bro-

kered the deal for Don Alberto Corp. and Gaine-

sway to purchase Empire Maker from the Japan

Bloodstock Breeders' Association. Five years ago

de Seroux represented the JBBA in purchasing

Empire Maker from Juddmonte Farms.

Blood-Horse Daily: What has been your

experience working with the JBBA on the two

Empire Maker deals?

De Seroux: It's kind of a full circle. Both times

when Empire Maker has been sold, he was not

supposed to be buyable. He was never "for sale" by

either party, so it makes a very interesting story.

The JBBA is a breeders' association, so they

are in the business of helping breeders get

access to good stallions, so it's not the same

economics. For the American farms we look at

(the business) in terms of investment and return

on the investment. But the JBBA is more of a

service company, in a way.

BHD: What events led up to the latest

purchase of Empire Maker?

De Seroux: The JBBA had been approached

by various farms to purchase the horse and

always said he was not on the market. But the

more they received requests and offers, they

decided they didn't want to conduct a Dutch

auction. They went back to the people that

made offers and said, "Put your best offer for-

ward, and then we will decide if the best offer

is something we want to consider." They set a

deadline of Sept. 5, and at that time they would

consider the best offer.

Don Alberto and Gainesway was the group

with the best offer, and the JBBA decided that

they would accept it.

BHD: What was Don Alberto's strategy for

acquiring Empire Maker?

De Seroux: Don Alberto had tried to lease

Empire Maker to Chile for the last three years,

and they had been in touch with the JBBA hop-

ing to shuttle the horse. But the JBBA was not

receptive to that idea, so it came to a point that

they thought the best strategy may be to pur-

chase the horse instead of leasing him.

Carlos Heller, the principal of Don Alberto,

contacted Antony Beck himself. Don Alberto has

a lot of nice mares and a very nice farm, but at

the moment they are not set up to stand stal-

lions in Kentucky yet. Maybe that will be some-

thing coming up in the future, but I can't speak

for them on that aspect.

After being the best farm in Chile for years,

Don Alberto is trying to establish the best farm

they can (in Kentucky) and have access to the best

stallions. They purchased a very nice farm in Ken-

tucky three years ago, and they have purchased a

lot of very good mares, so acquiring Empire Maker

made a lot of sense for their business plan.

The fact that Don Alberto came into Kentucky

only in the last three years and has made such a

significant move to bring the stallion back to Ken-

tucky speaks volumes about their goal and that

they're very serious about the whole business. BH
