Our Commitment to North America

Daimler operates factories and distribution centers around the world. While our roots are in Germany, about one-tenth of our global work force is here in North America. We are particularly proud to be an important contributor to the thriving economies throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico.

With brands like Mercedes-Benz, smart USA, Freightliner, Thomas Built Buses, Western Star, Freightliner and Dodge Sprinter, as well as Orion and Setra Buses, Daimler is regarded as one of the most significant transatlantic distributors and manufacturers in North

America. Daimler’s 22,092 employees in the region are making sure that they are a vital part of the solution for sustainable automotive mobility in America.

True to our commitment, the company continues to invest in its facilities through-out North America. In the United States, our Mercedes-Benz U.S. International facility in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, employs almost 3,000 people. More than 1,500 employees work for Mercedes-Benz USA, and more than 11,000 for Daimler Trucks North America. Daimler Mexico employs almost 3,400 people. Approximately 1,250 employees work for Mercedes-Benz Canada.

Because of our dedicated employees in Canada, the United States and Mexico, and the superior products built here, Daimler is experiencing ongoing success in North America. We are proud that in an environment of constant change, our company’s commitment, investment and innovation have significant and positive effects on North America and its economy.

We invite you to read our brochure and see for yourself the kind of impact Daimler in North America has on the economy, on communities, on the people who work for us and on those who drive our products.

Dear Reader,

Daimler is a company of German origin – yet we feel right at home here in North America. The United States is our biggest export market: In the first quarter of 2010, Mercedes-Benz sold more cars here than any other German premium brand. And despite the general economic downturn, 2009 marked our best sales year ever in Canada.

Mercedes-Benz is the most widely recognized name in the Daimler family in North America. In fact, many Mercedes vehicles are also proudly “Made in America”: At our plant in Tuscaloosa, we build premium cross-over vehicles and SUV’s for the world markets. In 2014, we will add production of our C-Class.

However, Daimler in North America is much more than premium passenger cars. Daimler Trucks North America is the region’s largest truck manufacturer under the storied brands Freightliner, Western Star and Detroit Diesel Corporation. In 2009, we opened our new benchmark truck plant in Saltillo, Mexico. Daimler Buses provides leading conventional and alternative-drive Setra and Orion buses. Daimler Vans USA delivers our trusted Sprinter vans to customers in America. In addition, Daimler Financial Services, Mercedes-Benz Financial and Daimler Trucks Financial are highly respected automotive financial institutions.

North America is not just an important market, it is also a great place to develop new ideas. Our local Research & Technology facilities help us continuously improve our vehicles’ safety and environmental friendliness. What’s more, we promote the commercialization of alternative drivetrains together with our North American partners. One example is our cooperation with the pioneering electric car manufacturer Tesla. Another is our participa-tion in the California Fuel Cell Partnership. We not only revolutionize car technology but also the way cars are used. In Austin, Texas, we now offer our iconic smart cars in our innovative “micro rental” program called “car2go.”

You see, we are truly part of the fabric of North America. We employ its industrious people. We bolster its economy. We support its innovative spirit. We are committed to sustainability and to supporting the communities in which our employees work and live.

I invite you to get the full picture of Daimler in North America in the pages that follow.

Sincerely,

Dr. Dieter ZetscheChairman of the Board of Management, Daimler AG

The vehicle’s exceptional winter driving capabilities were highlighted during a recent press program, which traveled north of the Arctic Circle as a group of 46 participants successfully navigated some of the most challenging and remote roads

in the country. The smart fortwo garnered significant positive media attention, dispelling misconceptions that the vehicle is only suited for urban use in Canada.

Since then, the Sprinter brand has been success-fully integrated into the company’s existing pan-Canadian retail network, and dealers have enthusiastically embraced these

Mercedes-BenzU.S.International(MBUSI) planted its roots in North America in 1997 as the first Mercedes-Benz passenger vehicle plant located outside Germany. MBUSI, based in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, has built more than 1 million (and counting) world-class Mercedes-Benz vehicles, and is well into the second chapter of its life, creating new products and expanding its impact on Tuscaloosa and Alabama.

Initially, the M-Class sport utility vehicle was the only vehicle built in the plant. The vehicle exceeded original expectations, with 570,000 built during the vehicle’s eight-year life cycle. That success paved the way for a $600 million expansion in the U.S., followed in 2009 with announcements of a $290 million Body Shop Expansion and plans to bring production of the next generation C-Class to the Tuscaloosa plant beginning in 2014.

The Tuscaloosa plant represents a $1.2 billion–plus investment for its parent company, Daimler AG. MBUSI currently employs about 3,000 team members.Despite the difficult economy, the plant produced 90,616 vehicles in 2009, in-cluding the second generation M-Class, the R-Class Sports Tourer and the GL-Class full-size SUV.
