Well, hello! Weve had a little makeover around here. Call it a spring cleaning of sorts, just in time for warmer weather in the Midwest. Wait, who am I kidding? Lets get real, weve got a couple more months of cold weather to endure around here. At any rate, we are excited to show off our manicured website--cleaner, simpler, prettier. Trends move fast in this industry, and we like to keep things fresh and up to date. Be sure to check us out at DaintyObsessions.com. Youll find a few new features, like being able to purchase back issues. Total bonus!

This spring season we are looking forward to a refreshing changes in the industry as well. We are pleasantly observing a shift from the vintage-country and leaning more towards clean lines, a real focus on design and an overall more organic celebration. We are loving the modified rustic ideas and seeing the return of glam formal affairs. However, weddings are still holding true to one important element--reflecting your own personal style.

In this issue you will find yourself oohing and awing over 2014s hot wedding movements. Everything from your Pantone color of the year (can you guess what it is?), to bold hair and makeup looks, to sizzling catering trends your guests will thank you for. Im particularly in love with this issues real weddings. Youll see a combination of culture, inspiring details, heartfelt love stories, and some gorgeous detail varieties.

Thanks for perusing our spring issue. We hope this finds you well and inspired.

  • question & answerDO

    Megan of Gala by Megan

Q : Who should be the first to know about my engagement?

A : Getting engaged is probably the most exciting moment of a womans life to date at that point. And, although you want to shout it from the rooftops and scream it through the streets, there are a few people who deserve that first announcement. First and foremost should be the parents of the bride, followed by the parents of the groom. This is a moment that every girls parents anticipate. If they were to find out that anyone else was informed before them, it would be devastating. However, once the parents have had their moment of joyits a free for all!

Q : How do I get my guests to RSVP in time?

A : Its always a good idea to set an RSVP Date at least two weeks before the time you actually need it. This gives those guests that are always running behind a bit of leeway. Once you get closer to the actual time of need, sending out a polite reminder e-mail is a sure way of get an instant response. And, if that doesnt work, a text or phone call reminder is perfect okay.

Q : How can I politely decline being a bridesmaid?

    A : Being a bridesmaid is a big

responsibility, and not one that we always have the time or the money for. If you feel the need to decline an invitation to be a bridesmaid, there is a polite way of doing so. Let the bride know how excited and happy you are for her and that you cant wait to share in her special day by attending her wedding as a supportive, loving guest, but at this time you dont feel you have the time to dedicate (or the funds) to be the proper bridesmaid she deserves. Reinforce your good wishes and, again, tell her how happy you are for her.

Q : Is it okay to use mobile devices to upload images during the wedding?

A : This is the most important day of a couples life, and assuming the right to upload photos from their wedding without their permission is a big violation of privacy, not to mention that it is the brides right to be the first one to share those moments with the public. Take all the pictures you want, and once you see the bride has started to share photos on social media websites, then it is safe to say that you may begin to share yours as well. Be sure they are tasteful and wont embarrass anyone. However, there are many apps on mobile devices that brides will ask their guests to download and share all photos within that album. When requested by

the bride to participate, this is perfectly acceptable and fun!

Q : Can I tell my bridesmaid what kind of bridal shower I want?

A : Hinting to your bridesmaids about the type of shower you want is fine, but requesting a certain type or wanting to be a part of planning it is really taking the fun out of the few things your bridesmaids will get to decide on themselves. If you have chosen bridesmaids who know you well, this shouldnt be an issue. If not, just sit back and appreciate anything and everything they do to honor you on this occasion.

Q : Who is expected to give a toast at the reception?

A : It is customary for the brides father, the maid of honor and the best man to give a speech/toast. However, there are many people that are uncomfortable with public speaking. Give a heads up to these people early on in the process that this is something that is typically done and get their feedback on whether or not they are comfortable doing so. This will also give them notice and plenty of time to plan. If not, you will have plenty of time to ask a backup. For instance: mothers, best friends or a close family member.

Noticing a trend towards the less traditional while still capturing the essence of a celebration is all the rave right now. There is a drift towards organically personalizing your occasion,

and not in a way where a couple does a dessert buffet instead of a cake (gasp!). In a way where brides are scrapping the white gown, serving food family style and doing away with boring centerpieces. This movement is happening right here in the Midwest. So, naturally we looked to local, Midwestern artists to partake in our modern-boho editorial.

Our first stop was Lisa Hackwith from Hackwith Design House. Her earth toned, handmade garments were fitting for the non-fussy, laid back spirit. The casual and custom-sewn pieces shaped a relaxed appeal. Setting a geometric tone for the event, we looked to Paper Rock Scissor whose detailed stationery, modern fonts and atypical shapes created a modern appeal.

Communicating ideas from shapes, forms and associations, Chentell Stiritz of Convivial Production merged symbolic pieces of dinnerware into the family style feast. The gridded, satin,

hexagonal patterns brought the table scape to life, giving it a clean and visually stimulating element. Jackie Reisenauer of Munster Rose went abstract. With literally no flowers in the shoot, Reisenauer adorned the scene using cacti, aloe vera, olive branches, bay leaves and fig trees; foraging an unexpected boho bouquet without interfering with the neutral tones of the concept. Concluding the beauty of modern-boho, Theo Nguyen of The Hair District produced the subtlest hair and makeup for the radiant, Judith Kostroski.

With all the million decisions you and your hubby need to make leading up to the nuptials, deciding your wedding registry may be one of the best parts. Plums Cooking Co. in downtown

Sioux Falls, South Dakota specialize in an array of top of the line kitchen gadgets, utensils, cooking ware, bowls, cooking classes, and all things useful for your shared household. Meet the experts in

the field and see why you should stop in to register.

Tell us about Plums Cooking Co. and where it all began?

Plums Cooking Co. began in Sioux City, Iowa in 1987 as an offshoot of Plums Restaurant which was a 3 star eatery open from 1985 to 1993. We started as a deli selling soups, cakes and salads, as well as deli sandwiches to go. Only about 15% of our floor

space was given to the kinds of products that we carry now.

What types of services, products and registry items do you offer?

At Plums, we offer bridal and gift registries--everything from free gift wrap service to knife sharpening.

We sell quality cookware: cutlery, dinnerware, flatware and kitchen tools, gadgets, wine and wine accessories. Small electrics: coffee makers, blenders and juicers. We have scented candles and soaps, as well as engraved salad bowls, glassware, pitchers and carafes are also available at Plums and make nice hostess and wedding party gifts.

  • Tell us about your cooking classes.

We have a full teaching kitchen at Plums and offer classes in several different formats. We have hour-long classes (offered both at noon and 6 p.m.), as well as longer, more involved classes that are two to two-and-a-half hours. Our teachers include a local attorney who is a wine enthusiast and collector, as well as an accomplished cook who excels at French cooking and loves to surprise us with new things. We also have a trained chef who teaches Paleo Lifestyle cooking, healthy eating and cooking skills for kids. In addition, we have a teacher who teaches Southern Indian cooking. One of our teachers has a degree in patisserie and teaches our entertaining classes with a flourish. An Italian teacher is being added as well as our Farm Food, City Cuisine teacher. We also offer private cooking classes as team builders for many businesses in the area. Bridal shower classes and private classes can be arranged for 15 or more people also.

Have you noticed any trends in the kitchen and cooking department? Particular items people are registering for?

Vitamix and juicers and anything that leads to healthy eating have been popular. Sets of cookware and cutlery (which can be divided up for individual purchase). People seem to be doing quality and looking for things that will last, as opposed to things that will need to be replaced in a year or two.

How far in advance should couples start registering for wedding gifts?

Most people register a few months ahead of the wedding unless there are showers earlier than that. It is fine to update every once in awhile with additional items as you think of them. A registry does not need to be done all at once.

What are the top 5 things couples register for?

We both originally hail from the Midwest. We knew that wherever we planned our wedding that our friends would be traveling from all over the country.

(Read: 38 states on the guest list). We wanted to have a weekend filled with things we love (like the beautiful Missouri River, cold cocktails, and juicy

burgers and fries), but also showed our appreciation for their attendance. Despite growing up in South Dakota, I come from a family of sailors. We loved

the idea of a clean, bright, regal pallet of navy, white and camel. We used this to help design everythingwhile never outwardly nautical, there was

certainly an influence on the design.

Perhaps the most meaningful and important part of our plans came in the ceremony planning. We got married in the church where my parents were

married. Since I grew up Catholic and Andrews family is protestant, we wanted to make sure everyone felt included in the ceremony by making a

complete program with responses, prayers, music, etc. We also decided to have a choir comprised of some of our good friends. We sang with them in the

choir and my brother and sister were cantorsit was really special.

Both of Andrews parents are ministers.

Andrews mother helped administer our vows. The whole thing was

With our families and friends spread across the country, Patrick and I initially had a hard time finding a city to

host the wedding and reception. We searched for the perfect combination of rustic and picturesque locations.

After an initial visit to Nebraska City we werent sold, but as we weighed other options it became the obvious

choice. We had the amazing Historic Barns at Arbor Day Farms, but also the wonderful Lied Lodge for people

on big, beautiful platters. We served caprese and hearty Italian salads, garlic pepper-rubbed rib-eye, roasted chicken with capers, handmade tortellini,

and rustic Italian olive bread. Alongside the cake, we served Italian wedding cookies (Patricks familys recipe) and limoncello (my father made at home).

The food definitely took on an Italian flair. Throughout cocktail hour, we served quenching honey bourbon shandies and lemonade. Both were a huge hit in

    90 degree, humid weather.

  • My good friend, Veronica Valencia, created the bouquets and boutonnieres the night before the wedding. We hand-picked these flowers and others

from a local wholesaler three days prior. We found various other floral to supplement. The sprigs placed on the menus, for example, came from my

moms backyard. Our great friends created all of the wonderful centerpieces and tied the lavender and yarrow to chairs in the barn. Contrary to what

one would assume about a barn on a hot summer day, the ceremony space smelled lovely. The honeybee element showed up not only in Patrick and my

boutonnieres, but also in the hair pins the groomsmaids wore. Not only a wonderful symbol of summer in the country, but historically a symbol of royalty

and signified immortality, resurrection, diligence and indefatigable effort. A perfect, subtle touch for us to start our lives together.

John and I met through a close friend of his. In fact, it was one of the very first weekends I lived in Chicago.

From then on, his friend and I stayed in touch, and I would run into the two of them together frequently. In the

back of my mind, I always thought John was very cute, but not my type. Years later, John came to a going

away party for my roommate, and suddenly I realized I liked him. A few months later, I discovered the feeling

was mutual. Fast forward to September 2012 in the Douro Valley of Portugal, John asked me to marry him.

  • People rarely believe me when I say this, but I was not the girl who dreamed about my wedding. I really wasnt. That being said, I have attended

many weddings throughout the years, and I knew what I liked. We decided on a barn wedding for two reasons: 1.) We had been to a barn wedding

a few years prior, and we both remembered it fondly 2.) We noticed the guests truly let down their hair and had a fantastic time in a more casual,

outdoor setting. It turns out a lot of people want a barn wedding in September! With a little luck, and a lot of phone calls, we selected little-known

    Rosebrook Farm in Independence, Minnesota.

    daintyobsessions.com 77

  • The most important part of the planning was to keep it personal. We did not agree to things simply because it was tradition or supposed to do that

at a wedding. Which meant; no bouquet toss (as a single girl at many weddings, that was always a dreaded portion of the evening for me), no garter

toss and no cake cutting. All of these things are perfectly fine, but wasnt for us. Everything we did at our wedding held a meaning. From the tables

with countries we had visited, to the John and Chelsey cocktails and even the family style dinner; we wanted our guests to see us throughout the

day. We made a strong attempt to go with the flow. In the end, its your day. Its only 24 hours. Enjoy it!

Hire amazing vendors. My wedding day was stress free and went wonderfully because I had

such amazing vendors. Dont do anything just because its

a tradition; if it doesnt speak to you, skip it! And I would

say, keep your guests in mind. I was constantly thinking how

would it feel to be a guest at this wedding, and I made my

Go with your gut on what you like when planning. For

My advice to brides would be to not be afraid of texture! Mixing

fabrics, textures and even designers can get you the exact outcome you want, making you feel like the bride you want to

be! I also never thought that my wedding dress would be a two-piece, but that made it perfect! Be open to different things. It

just might lead you to what you really want!

  • Not all barn inspiration must include burlap and

with an English country garden feel. The floral and

feminine-inspired invitation set, designed by Lindsay Arneson Creative, have

warm, raspberry undertones and a charming mix of

romantic script and modern typography. Ranee Nash of Flowers by Ranee truly set

the tone for this shoot with her enchanting designs.

Using a mix of over 30 types of flowers and a base of

greenery from Sprengeri to Bay Leaves, Ranee brought

to life an impressive array of texture that created a dreamy

touch. We used blooms in shades of lemon yellow,

coconut white, candy pink and sky blue in everything from a three-tiered floral

chandelier to the cascading bridal bouquet. Our brides

loose,up-swepthair was styled byKatie Sondreal at ADAE Salon. Katie topped

our model bride with a fresh floral headpiece, bringing a

Designs gave a nod to the quaint and historic by

enhancing with vintage tea boxes, watering cans, a garden wheelbarrow and a tufted silk sofa once used

by eccentric socialites in the 1940s. Above the sofa hung

a chandelier created from a re-purposed drum shade,

old family broaches and jewels suspended with twine. Melanies nostalgic dcor was

the perfect complement to the vibrant, spring-toned floral.

The exposed wood table featuring a custom-sewn table runner in chenille cotton, was topped with

    moss-covered candelabras, heirloom handkerchiefs and

Ending the evening with a colorful dinner, personal

chef Cindy Pullen prepared heartwarming entrees. The menu featured a Chicken Pot Pie in Phyllo, Bacon

Pete and I met in 2008, my sophomore and his junior year of college. I took a trip to Omaha, NE over

Christmas break to visit my college roommate, and while I was there I thought I would try to see a friend

from high school, Molly. When I went to Mollys house, this adorable guy opened the door, and thats when I

Our wedding was the most magical day of both of our lives. After being apart for so long (we dated long distance until we both completed school and I

moved to Omaha), it was such a celebration to be joined in marriage. We were blessed to be surrounded by many friends and family. I chose the colors of

our wedding to be mint, coral and gold. I wanted everything to be simple, classic, fun, and summery. I was inspired to create an atmosphere that upheld

both the elegance of tradition and appeal of trend. At the end of the day, the most important thing was that we got married and we threw one heck of a party!

Honeymoon DestinationssBursting forth from the pristine Caribbean Sea, Saint Thomas is a beacon of relaxation and tranquility for all serenity now seekers. Part of the U.S. Virgin Islands, the 32-square mile island has the feel of distant, tropical paradise with the convenience of being an unincorporated U.S. territory. Meaning, passports are recommended but not required for U.S. citizens, making it all the more convenient for your holiday of love.

The City of Love. The City of Lights. Arguably one of the most romantic cities in the world. A honeymoon in Paris is a no-brainer. Strewn with enchanting parks and gardens for romantic strolls and picnics, boasting cuisine that looks and tastes like a fairy tale where all dreams come true, and all of it covered in a language that sounds like a love song no matter what is being said. The city of Paris lives, breathes, and bleeds all things love throughout its fascinating history.

PARIS, FRANCE SAINT THOMAS - U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS

Why Honeymooners Flock Here:Thomas Jefferson once quipped, A walk about Paris will provide lessons in history, beauty and in the point of Life. But, as wise as he was, he forgot one thing Paris teaches to all its pupils: Romance. The great capital of France simply exudes romance from sunrise to sunset making it an enchanting sweethearts haven for newlyweds and seasoned lovers alike.

Where to Go/Stay:Travel expert Kristina Wolfe at Travel Leaders Sioux Falls recommends staying at the Grand Hotel du Palais Royal, mere steps away from the world-famous Louvre Museum, or the Renaissance Paris Le Parc Trocadero Hotel, a stones throw from the Eiffel Tower and Champs-Elysses. Both hotels, Kristina adds, are part of the Luxury Select program that

provides VIP amenities like champagne, breakfast, etc. when you book with Travel Leaders!

What to Do:There is virtually no limit to the activities and experiences that await you in Paris. The obvious ones: Sharing a kiss under the shadow of the Eiffel Tower, relishing in some of the worlds most beautiful art in the Louvre or the Musee dOrsay, scarfing down a decadent crepe, shopping at the most chic fashion stores in the world, taking a romantic stroll by the picturesque Seine river, and having one of the most amazing meals in your life at one of the many Michelin-starred restaurants. But, beyond the obvious, you simply must experience the mere thrill of taking your spouses hand and getting lost in the grand City of Love.

Why Honeymooners Flock Here:Saint Thomas has all the makings for a stress-free, sunshiny honeymoon. The breathtaking island boasts warm, tropical weather year-round and the convenient location and ease of travel is alluring to those that do not have an overabundance of time for their getaway vacation. With its luxurious amenities and conveniences, Saint Thomas is truly a dreamland to laze around soaking up the sun with your dearly beloved.

Where to Go/Stay: Travel consultant Denise Hanson of Travel Partners Sioux Falls advocates a stay at the Frenchmans Reef & Morning Star Marriott Beach Resort. Located right on the south coast of the island, the hotel was recently renovated two years ago and has the feel of a brand new world-class resort and

spa. Boasting its own private beach club, dining options and activities, it is entirely possibly to never have to leave the resort!

What to Do: The island possesses a bounty of beautiful beaches, golfing, snorkeling, diving, fishing, boating, and a fabulous shopping scene to boot. Denise says that while honeymooners travel to the island primarily to relax and take in the island itself, there is more than enough to do while visiting. Aside from all the water sports and exploration, the golfing is fantastic and there is duty free shopping, so you dont pay taxes on your purchases, Denise says. Also, Saint Thomas is it is not an overly crazy place like Cancun, there is still some nightlife but not your Spring Break type of nightlife, so it really is perfect for a relaxing honeymoon.

Your inaugural aisle walk is quickly approaching. In fact, you are mere moments away from having a partner in crime for life. But once you are pronounced husband and wife amidst fanfare, triumphant trumpets and the release of a dozen white doves, there will be only one thing on your mind... Your getaway. Your honeymoon, where you can really just soak in all that marvelous matrimonial euphoria. Below, we spoke with our go-to travel agencies about two destinations that will allow you to do just that. Now, lets get you two lovebirds flitting out of town!

  • Take a walk on the wild side of South Africa. Whether you choose to leisurely tour a vineyard, hike the iconic Table Mountain or drive an open game viewer to spot the Big 5 on a South African safari, your travel options are practically endless. This exotic and romantic destination is precisely what honeymooners Liz and Jake thoughtfully planned and envisioned. Due to work and school obligations we were unable to honeymoon immediately following our wedding. We took advantage of the ample time to research destinations and decided to go somewhere that would be an adventure. We settled on South Africa, honestly, because it offered the cheapest flight of the adventurous places we had looked into, said Liz.Packing light with only a few versatile outfits each, the couple began their travels in the dramatic coastal city of Cape Town, South Africa, where they stayed at the Bluegum Hill Guesthouse. A charming bed and breakfast with great views of both the ocean and Table Mountain. They rented a car and spent several days swept away by modern architecture, bustling beaches, intriguing history, and penguin colonies. It was a bit entertaining (terrifying) to watch Jake drive a stick-shift on the wrong side of the road, Liz playfully recounted. We then took a ferry to Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 18 years during apartheid. Learning more about the history of apartheid was fascinating and added an extra dimension to our trip. We highly recommend reading into the history before going.

After exploring the bustle of Cape Town, it was nice to slow down the pace, remembered Liz. We went to Ernie Els Wines, Rust en Vrede Wine Estate and Spier Wine Farm along with a cheetah outreach.

No trip to Africa is whole without a guided night and day safari in search of the Big 5: elephant, lion, leopard, water buffalo, and rhino. How did the two of you meet? We both grew up in Pierre, two years apart, and there everybody kind of knows everybody from the time theyre born. So we dont know exactly when we met. But we started dating after the Pierre Senior Keg in 1983. We wish we had a better story, but we dont.

They say the first year of marriage is the hardest. What was yours like and what got you through it? Our first year was a real adjustment. Stacey got pregnant as soon as we were married and was really sick the whole time, too sick to work. John was working at a TV station, producing no-budget TV commercials. We were living on about $9,600 a year. We lived in an apartment near the Sioux Falls Arena. After we moved out, we found out they were dealing crack out of there. So we had the most humble of humble beginnings. This taught us not to get too caught up in material things. We had nothing but each other for that first year, and that turned out to be a very good thing.

What is your most memorable wedding moment? Even though it was October, it was pretty warm, almost like summer. Hot and sticky. And there were flies buzzing around us, crawling across the pastors face. Just like The Amityville Horror. Not a good omen. Amazing things worked out as well as they did after that.

Whats your biggest advice to current planning couples? Spend lots of time together24/7 for a long time ahead of the wedding. Make sure youre good friends and know each others odd habits and likes and dislikes so there are no surprises later. Know and like who youre getting married to long before you say I do so you dont end up wondering who you ended up with.

Whats the secret to a successful marriage? Laugh a lot every day. Make time

to talk to each other. Understand that your life together is all about gathering experiences and making memories to share. Also, remember that your marriage is way, way bigger than two people--its your kids, your families, your friends, your coworkers--there are a lot of folks depending on you having a happy and successful marriage. You cant just think about yourselves.

How do you deal with disagreements? Sometimes, calmly and diplomatically. Sometimes, loudly and harshly. Ultimately, its important for neither of us to insist on always being right. And to remember that every fight needs to end with two apologies. And usually a laugh or two.

Do you have children? If so, how does that change a marriage? We have three daughters: Jennifer, 28; Jordan, 24; and Jaycie, 16. Kids change everything in a marriage. The priorities shift--its all about the kids from the moment they show up. Thats when both of us grew up big time. Being good parents and giving our children good lives became the most important part of our partnership, and drove nearly every decision we made together. Almost all of our most wonderful times revolve around experiences we had with the kids. Becoming a family was the best thing that ever happened to us and it continues to be to this day.

What was the biggest adjustment to married life? Really being on our own. We were together at college in Vermillion, but that wasnt the same as really working and being on our own. We knew what it was like to be together, but now we suddenly had to live within a budget and get used to a lower standard of living as we started our lives together. The days of being spoiled kids were over, and ultimately, that ended up being good for both of us.

Top 3 things any couple should absolutely know about each other before getting married?

    1. The white-hot passion of courtship doesnt last forever, so you need to know that you are best friends who can be with each other for 24 hours a day for months on end.

    2. You need to be able to have fun together doing things that dont involve drinking or hanging out in bars.

    3. Make sure you have the same desires and expectations about life, family, children, careers, the future, etc. beyond just planning your wedding together.
