Major time spent tweaking Kinsey's ad -- hope he likes it. Also photoshop'd picture to make Neal lighter against background. Created new logo-type based on low-rez template -- also replaced old logo on Sponsors page. Hope he's giving you big bucks for all this attention.

Note that Kinsey spells his business name 2 ways. The one with apostrophe + "s" seems to be descriptive, while the "Inc." version is official business name. Both are used on his website in different places.

Thanks so much for sprucing this up, I'm sure he will be pleased, and although he is not paying me, he is presenting for a minimal reimbursement :)

SOIL RENAISSANCE: Diversity in Modern Agricultural Soil Health

Th e Soil Renaissance Initiative is a diverse group of farm-

ers, educators and scien-

tists focused on a common

goal of promoting soil

health in modern agricul-

ture. Learn how Klaas and

Mary-Howell Martens of

Lakeview Organic Grain

(along with their son Peter)

manage their 1,600 acres

of organic grain crops with

a passion for teaching, pro-

moting and understanding soil health, soil biology and soil

chemistry while producing quality organic crops on the farm.

Th en fi nd out how Lakeview Organic Grain’s farming practic-

es are one example of the strategic planning of the Soil Re-

naissance Initiative, whose partners cross all agricultural

management systems from organic to vast multi-national ag-

ricultural groups with a common goal of promoting and de-

veloping best soil management practices for the future.

WEED MANAGEMENT STRATEGIESNorm Conrad, Northeast director for NCAT, will lead this

workshop focusing on the most commonly-found weeds on

Northeast dairy and fi eld crop farms - concentrating on the

hay and corn crops. Improve your weed identifi cation skills

during a hands-on session, then review physical, cultural,

mechanical and biological weed controls including some you

may never have realized are already working for you on your

farm! Th is workshop will provide beginning and transition-

ing farmers with the tools needed to understand weed man-

agement in organic systems.

:–:pm Onondaga F

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANTS TELLING YOU? Neal Kinsey of Kinsey Agricultural Services will dis-

cuss the use of plant tissue analysis for on-farm application.

Learn how to take proper plant tissue samples and read re-

sults. Neal will discuss the connection between soil health

and plant nutrient composition using samples from NY State

organic farms. Join Neal for an interactive discussion on soil

and plant health.

INTEGRATING SMALL FARMS AND SMALL GRAINS

Kat Loeck, an instructor for the Northeast Beginning

Farmers Project at Cornell University, will discuss how inte-

grating small grains on a small-scale organic farm can cre-

ate management challenges. Th is workshop is for beginning

farmers and those in transition to organic. Quality grain at

every scale of production depends on having a realistic farm

plan and the appropriate equipment and infrastructure to

manage the harvest. Start with market opportunities, crop

rotations, and drying and storage systems before that dream

combine becomes a reality; Kat will explain how to ease in to

organic small grains and scale up over time!

:–:pm Onondaga F

OREI: VALUE-ADDED GRAINS PROJECT

Join Robert Perry, NOFA-NY Grain and Field Crop Co-

ordinator, Lisa Kissing Kucek and David Benscher, Cor-

nell University, for an update from the research team at

Cornell Plant Breeding and Genetics Section on ancient

and heritage grains, and the OREI value-added grain proj-

ect. This project explores Einkorn, Spelt and Emmer grains

for the future. We will discuss what varieties and poten-

tial recommendations will be forthcoming as the project

matures.

MAKING THE MOST OF YOUR FORAGE PRODUCTION SYSTEM “BALEAGE TO MILK JUG”

Are you feeding hay, silage, and baleage but aren’t get-

ting the milk production you want? Learn your options from

Janice Degni, a team leader, fi eld crop specialist and mem-

ber of Th e South Central NY Dairy and Field Crops Program.

Janice will teach you about soil fertility, seed selection, fi ne-

tuning the harvest and protecting the feed in storage for

baleage and haylage. You can help your cows make milk with-

out feeding much grain when you know how to fully utilize

the potential of the grains being fed!

HOMEOPATHIC, HERBAL AND HOLISTIC SOLUTIONS TO COMMON SITUATIONS IN THE DAIRY HERD

Th is two-part interactive and integrated workshop will

showcase practical, common sense approaches to frequent

health care, management and husbandry situations found in

dairy animals of all ages and classes. We are excited to have

a robust panel of expert farmers including Susan Beal of

Laughing Oak Farm, Jim Gardiner of Hidden Opportunities

Farm, Paul and Phyllis VanAmburgh of Dharma Lea and

Maureen Knapp of Cobblestone Valley Farm. Th is dynam-

ic group will share their experiences in homeopathic, herb-

al and holistic solutions, including obstacles and pitfalls of

these methods.

ROBOTIC MILKING PASTURE PERFECTAre you interested in adding robotic milkers to you farm,

but you’re not sure how they would integrate into you pasture

system? Chuck Diechmann of Willow Creek Farm, Paul Til-

lotson of Cottonwood Farms and Virginia Chamberlain of

Alfred State will share their experiences converting milking

systems, rotating cows and operating robotic milkers. Even

the skeptical will gain understanding of managing cows on

pasture through an automatic milking system. Hear fi rst-

hand what to do and what to avoid when adding robotic milk-

ing to your farm system.

BALANCED NUTRITION FOR SUCCESSFUL 100% GRASS-FED DAIRY

Dr. Silvia Abel-Caines, Organic Valley Staff Veterinarian,

will focus on how to successfully transition from convention-

al or organic grain dairy production to no-grain dairy pro-

duction, and how to minimize its impact on body condition

score. Th is in-depth discussion will include the principles to

balance a grazing and a non-grazing season ration, while us-

ing cow-side tools to determine whether the cows’ nutrient

requirements are being met and milk production is not being

limited. We’ll also explore the economics behind this feeding

system as we compare it to medium/low grain feeding.

:–:pm Onondaga H

INSIGHTS INTO GRASS-FED DAIRYPaul and Phyllis Van Amburgh of Dharma Lea, Nathan

Weaver of Grünen Aue Farms, Tom McGrath of Autumn

Valley Farm and Jim Gardiner of Hidden Opportunities

Farm will discuss the road to grass-fed, including the produc-

tion model benefi ts, methods, tools and pitfalls. Th ey will re-

view milk production, land and cattle fertility, body score,

and energy requirements, all from a 100% Grass-fed stand-

point. Join us to learn the ins and outs of grass-based dairy

from seasoned veterans.

FEEDING FLAXSEED AND MOLASSES TO ORGANIC DAIRY COWS

In this workshop Dr. Andre Brito will present research data

from studies conducted at the University of New Hampshire

Burley-Demeritt Organic Dairy Research Farm (UNH-ODRF).

Th e UNH-ODRF is a working farm currently milking 50 Jer-

sey cows. With the growing interest in improving the content

of omega-3 fatty acids and CLA in milk and producing “grass

milk” with molasses supplementation, Dr. Brito will share re-

sults of three studies in which Jersey cows were fed fl axseed and

molasses during the winter and grazing seasons. Farmers will

be updated with research results to make informed decisions

about adopting fl axseed and molasses in their family farms.

Risk Management Agency

Chris Simons’ family dairy farm is in Oneida County, New York. In 2013, he began his own grain enterprise. After meeting with a crop insurance agent, he signed up for 75% coverage. He planted 75 acres of organic corn and 75 acres of organic soybeans. Then, from the middle of May to the middle of June, his area received 40 inches of rain. “It’s unbelievable to think that in a matter of about 3 hours, you can get 6 inches of rain.” Chis said. “I harvested my soybeans on one field at 3 bushels per acre... my crop insurance saved me.”
