After you have your list of girls, contact each family and set up a parents meeting. At this meeting you will give parents/guardians the basic information about Girl Scouting, guide them in completing thenecessary paperwork, and request a commitment of their time regardless of the time they have tooffer. Please give the parents/guardians a copy of the Family Guide found in your troop packet. Takethe time to complete the Troop Directory portion of the Family Guide before distribution. More copiesare available as needed from your neighborhood manager or membership specialist. Be sure to ask

your neighborhood service team for help if you feel you need assistance at this first meeting.

    parentS meetinG

BaSic information` Introductions of leaders, co-leaders, and

parents/guardians is a must! Get to knowthe parents/guardians of the girls you will be

working with. They will be more willing to help you if they know you.

` Use the Family Guide as a basis for givingadults a brief overview of Girl Scouting.

` Ask parents to look at the back of the Family Guide. Talk about the need of a troopcommittee. Some parents may be ready to

volunteer to help and others will want to think about what and how much they can do.

` Discuss uniforms, cost, and who pays forinsignia and pins. (Uniforms are not required, but should be worn for official publicfunctions, such as flag ceremonies.)

` Discuss the annual membership dues, which must accompany the membershipregistrations and are sent to Girl Scouts of theUSA.

` Promote Family Support Plan (FSP) as a way to get start-up money for the troop and tosupport the Girl Scout council. There arethree opportunities to give; 1.) at the time ofregistration by denoting the contribution onthe registration form 2.) at a troop meeting

when packets are distributed 3.) council- wide direct mailing. Let your troop consultant, neighborhood manager, or membershipspecialist know if you need help with thispresentation.

` Discuss the troop meeting plans. Clearly state your expectations for attendance, tardiness, and general behavior. Be sure all parents/guardians know the day, location, and timeof meetings and the procedure for bringinggirls to the meeting and for picking them upafterward. Establish a plan to be followed ifmeetings need to be canceled in case ofan emergency. Also make note of who isauthorized to pick up girls from the meeting.` Be prepared to provide informationon insurance, safety issues, and ParentPermission Forms.

` Discuss the troop roster. The troop roster is tobe used for Girl Scout activities only. Pleaseshare with your families the importance ofrespecting each others personal information, such as phone numbers and addresses.

paperWork ` Have parents/guardians complete the Annual Membership Registration Form, collect the

forms and the annual membership fees. (Currently $12 per membership.) Financial assistanceis available.

` Have parents/guardians complete the annual Girl Information and Parent Consent Form. Itmust be notarized, so try to arrange for a Notary to attend the meeting.

` Dont forget to promote the Family Support Program (FSP) as an opportunity to collect start-up funds for the troop and also support the council financially so we can continue to provide

A kaper in Girl Scouts is a job that needs to bedone during meetings. Girls even as young asDaisy Girl Scout age need to take responsibility for their own personal space and the meetingplace. Generally, girls love to help with thesetasks. Kapers might be helping with the snack, passing out supplies, taking up work, cleaningup, ceremonies, choosing the songs, stackingthe chairs, passing out name tags, etc.

Kaper charts can be made of anything but isusually displayed. Girls can volunteer for jobs oralternate tasks for each meeting.

A simple chart listing the date across the topand the tasks down the side can be made ona poster board, then girls either volunteer each

week for the tasks or rotate evenly, their names written on the chart.

kaper chart A fun but a little more complicated kaper chartto make is the kaper wheel cut from a piece ofposter board, on the outside of the drawn cir-cle write the kapers. If you have more girls thankapers, write some kapers twice (like clean-up)or write some FREE spaces. Space the kapersequal to the wedges you have drawn on thecut-out circle. Punch a hole in the center of thecut-out circle and in the center of the drawncircle. With a large brad, attach the cut-outcircle to the poster board. Girls can either spinfor jobs each time or they can simply move itone space each week.

Job jars, where each task is written on a slip ofpaper or popsicle stick and drawn each meet-ing is also effective.

Make a kaper chart out of a flannel board witha grid format, with the names of the kapers onone side

Name tags can be made out of a variety ofmaterials. You want something that is going tolast a few meetings until you get to know the girls

names. Ideas follow:` Foamie sheets (from a craft store) cut into

shapes can be decorated with permanentmarkers, other foamie shapes (you canbuy them pre-cut) can be glued to it, as

well as other decorations. Punch holes inthe bottom for the girls to string beads tothem for an extra pretty effect. Be sure to

write her name with a permanent marker, such as a Sharpie. Punch a hole at the topand string lanyard lacing or cord through tohang around her neck.

` Copy the Daisy pattern provided, oneper girl, preferably on card stock. Haveeach girl color the petals with markers orcrayons, or, for an older Daisy group and

with close supervision, have them usecolorful nail polish to paint the petals.

Write her name in permanent marker, suchas a Sharpie. Laminate the name tags if

you have access to a laminating machine,

laminating them makes them last muchlonger. Punch a hole in the top for thestring.

` Pin or clip badges also work well. Thesecan be found in office supply stores ordepartment stores.

friendShip SQueeZeHave all girls and adults stand in a circle holdinghands. You can do the traditional right over leftcrossed arms if it is not too complicated.

Discuss the purpose and the rules of thesqueeze, we are passing our friendship on tothe next girl in the form of a gentle squeeze, reminding us that we are all connected to eachother. No hard squeezes and no fake squeezes.

You may have to practice several times to getit right. You might ask the girls when they havereceived the squeeze to put their right foot intothe circle, or you can keep its location a secret.

You usually start the squeeze, but later you candesignate a special girl to start it.

When the squeeze gets back to you, you cansay Goodnight, Daisies or goodbye or whateveris appropriate and release them.

Older girls like to spin out. On the signal andstill holding hands, each girl at once lifts theircrossed arms over their heads and turns facingthe outside of the circle, uncrossing their handsand bringing them down by their sides. They then release hands.

Q: How do I handle a difficult and disruptive child in my troop? I have a girl in the troop whois loud, rebellious, and demands all the attention. What do I do?

a: Disruptive girls are truly a challenge to a leader and because all girls will benefit from a well-run Girl Scout program, getting her to control her behavior is important. Accordingto Safety-Wise, there are two types of girls who present challenges for troop leaders thedominant girl and the dependent girl. You have the dominant one. So what does thatmean?

These girls thrive on any type of attention, good or bad. Here are some suggested ways todeal with them:

    1. Dont reprimand in front of the girls; ignore her whenever possible, b t v wh h t c m m she loves being the bad girl and will continue any behavior that

    gets her attention.

    2. Quietly and personally praise her good qualities. r m mb t th p m L w .Maybe arrange a secret signal for when she is behaving properly.

    3. Dont argue with a dominant girl within the group. Discuss disagreements after the meeting, she is more defiant when she has an audience.

    4. Be firm and confident. You will earn her respect.

This information and more can also be found on pages 19-21 in Safety-Wise .

It may also help for you to talk to her parent or guardian. There may be issues in the family that may be causing her to act out in such a way. Be prepared to have specific incidentsto discuss with her parent or guardian. Work with her family to find a solution to the problembehavior. If the problem continues after several attempts to change her behavior, contact

    your membership specialist.

Sample daiSy puppet SkitPuppet plays for Daisy Girl Scouts rarely involve scripts and sometimes not many words. Limit thepuppeteers to two to four girls at a time and do several renditions of the play, or have the girls teamup and come up with their own plays. Narration is a good way to manage the play as the adult canread the words that illustrates being responsible for what I say and do. This is just a sample.
