Children News
Earlier this year we were
visited by South African
filmmaker Gareth Kaatze who
made a beautiful short video
about one of the children who
attended DAKTARI.
Check out the article
here!
It was an amazing experience
for both the children and us,
and I think we can all agree
the outcome is great!

Winner’s Game DriveEvery week at DAKTARI we receive eight children from
the nearby schools. Throughout their time at the camp
they learn about the animals of their country and the
natural environment surrounding them. At the end of
the week, the volunteers who have spent the week
with them decide on the ‘Winner of the Week’, an
award given to the most improved student. The prize is
a game drive! On February 22nd the children had an
exciting day at Makalali and experienced some
awesome sightings!

As you know, in January
we lost our precious
Leopard Shiloweni. It
was a tragic event that
really shook the camp,
yet the spirit of his
wonderful character and
beauty lives on. He is
sorely missed!
But Life Moves On!

Nikita is the latest member of Ian
and Michele’s family.
She arrived at our camp in
January and has grown into a
beautiful Rottweiler puppy.
Lady Pilou was found on her
own and brought to DAKTARI
where she has been nurtured
into a healthy young banded
mongoose!
They are both growing so fast!
Read more about her here!
Help Pilou here!!
Even more new animals!

Compton the squirrel was found at DAKTARI as a little baby, yet he has quickly made his place in
the camp and in our hearts. Even if he tries to eat every paper in the office!
Jackson is our newest adult mongoose! He has settled in very nicely. Because of his calm temper we
believe that he was most likely hand-raised. his is an advantage for interaction with the children
but the priority is still to rehabilitate him when we will have enough mongooses to form a family!
Animal news!

We have new animals at DAKTARI! A family
of guinea pigs found a home at the camp!
They are great to create compassion from
the children and from the looks of it, we
may be having little babies soon!

With the growing family comes a growing need for
space. Our friends Barry & Kerstin received money
from their friend, Gina Whitaker, who died earlier this
year. As she loved animal they decided to help
financially toward the building of the meerkat camp in
her honor. Their donation was added to the Brigitte
Bardot Foundation continued support for this camp.

Camp News
In early march we received the visit from Sabrina, aka the blogger behind
JustOneWayTicket! She spent a week interacting with the children and experiencing life
at DAKTARI alongside our big family of both people and of course animals. She took some
awesome pictures and videos which are up on her blog! We are happy to say that we have
made a new friend at DAKTARI and we hope to see her again soon
We are looking forward to reading her articles about her time with us!
Check out her
blog here!

Community Outreach!
DAKTARI runs the Eco-club at two local schools on Monday and Wednesday afternoon, as an
effort to raise awareness about the environment and the local wildlife through a fun and
interactive lesson! Over the past three months we have had great attendance and as a
prize for the best students, Nathalie and Sarah took them to the Khamai Reptile Park! It
was an awesome experience and definitely one that will inspire all the kids!

At the end of March we celebrated World Water
Day at DAKTARI! Anne Sophie made an amazing
video with the help of the whole team as well as
the children and the staff! One of the children,
Temosho, helped by reading his moving letter.
Amazing stuff! Temosho, 13

We have a NEW project! We are launching a new campaign on
GlobalGiving to fund the food and care of ALL
the animals at the camp! With a growing
number of members of our big family,
expenses are also growing. In an effort to
continue providing a healthy and comfortable
environment for the animals as well as
healthcare when needed, we are launching
this campaign for you to help us achieve this
goal! Thank you for your support!
Any big or small recurring donation helps
tremendously!
Check out the project HERE for more
information and to donate to the cause!!
A Special Thanks To…

Peter is a public speaker with a special interest in wildlife and its conservation.Although he lives in the UK and works there, he learnt of the DAKTARI projectfrom close friends, and after a visit to South Africa where he was able toexperience Kruger Park and DAKTARI itself, he was kind enough to include ourproject as a part of his talks on African Wildlife. Like DAKTARI, Peter isconvinced that education is perhaps the most important aspect of a sustainableapproach to African conservation efforts. From all of us at DAKTARI we want toextend our gratitude to Peter for helping us spread the word about our project, but more importantly, about the importance of preserving the wildlife of Africa.
