This programme is one of Dalarna University’s most outstanding inter-national programmes. Established in the 1990s, it has to a large extent been developed through extensive research work at the Solar Energy Research Center (SERC), which is part of Dalarna University. The pro-gramme has an ideal blend of theory and practical inputs to ensure you are exposed to all relevant subjects of solar energy engineering. Upon completion of the programme, you will have excellent job opportunities in the fast-growing solar industry in Europe as well as in other countries. Many graduates continue their aca-demic career as PhD students and become researchers and teachers at universities throughout the world. Programme graduates have formed an active worldwide Alumni network that supports current students in the development of suitable thesis pro-jects and later as they begin their professional careers.

Until quite recently, Dalarna University housed research labs in four diff erent loca-tions. Now, though, all research labs can be found under the same roof, in the building often referred to as e Black Box. As well as education and research at the post-graduate level in Materials Processing, research is also carried out in Solar Energy, Small-Scale En-ergy Systems, Energy Conversion and Soci-etal Processes. e Black Box is also home to a number of laboratories used for Steel Forming and Surface Engineering.

e façade of the building is constructed from a coloured steelplate called “Energy”, produced by the local steel company SSAB. e black plate is intended to save energy since the coating refl ects the heat from the sun while absorbing heat from machines and

equipment inside the building. Eighty square metres of solar thermal collectors comprise the façade and produce heat, and solar cells provide warm water, thus serving to save en-ergy while being educationally useful for the university. SERC (the Solar Energy Research Center) at Dalarna University is leading the research within applied use of solar energy in Sweden, while e Black Box serves as a gi-ant laboratory for students at the European School of Solar Energy (www.eses.org).

Suffi ce it to say, e Black Box in Borlänge, along with the project work being conducted there, is signifi cant for Dalarna University and will remain so well into the future. It’s a building that is at the forefront of tech-nological development, both on the inside as well as on the outside.

What actually goes on in the Black Box in Borlänge?

Research at DU is mainly conducted within our six research profi le areas:

•Energy,Forests&BuiltEnvironments•Health&Welfare•ComplexSystems–MicrodataAnalysis•Culture,Identity&Representations•SteelForming&SurfaceEngineering•Education&Learning

Why did you study Solar Energy at DU?I knew I wanted to get an education that would give me the competitive edge in the burgeoning solar industry and couldn’t fi nd that education opportunity in North America. So I googled available options and found ESES, and schools in Germany and Australia that fi t my interests. In the end I selected ESES due to its history, its great website, the responsiveness of the people I contacted there and the curriculum that was clearly communicated on the website. How would you describe your experience studying here? e programme provided a great foundation from which multiple career paths could be taken. I found that the course work was very independent: e.g., you could make as much or as little out of the experience as you wished.

What was the best part of your programme? My professors! Specifi cally Tara Kampal’s class on the economics of solar PV and Frank Fiedler’s class on PV system design. Who would you recommend study Solar Energy at DU?People who are interested in the project implementation side of solar photovoltaics and people who are interested in a broader view of photovoltaics before they decide on a niche for a PhD. Did your studies at DU help you get a relevant job?Yes, I would not be where I am today with-out the education I received from DU and ESES. I learned skills at DU and ESES that I use on the job every day. From time to time I even reference my old text books that live on my work desk.

What was the best thing about Sweden? e best thing about Sweden was the cul-ture. It is so diff erent from the culture of the United States. My experience of Swedish culture was that being a member of society means something completely diff erent there than it does in the United States. In Sweden people are appreciated equally for the value they contribute to society regardless of their career; whether they are a labourer, a banker or an engineer, everyone is appreciated for their contribution. I found this in the teach-ing, the testing, the social scene and even the language. e whole experience was refresh-ing and eye-opening to me. I loved it there.

Business Intelligence at Dalarna University offers you the chance to solve practical problems at the organisational level. In this two-year programme, you will gain unique and cutting-edge theoretical and practical knowledge with which you will be able to develop new ideas and processes. You will have the skills to collect, store, analyse and quality-assure data. In other words, you will be able to provide the right in-formation at the right time and in the right place so that it contributes to the develop-ment of an organisation.

By taking our Business Intelligence Pro-gramme, you will ensure that you are an attractive candidate in the international job market. You will have access to com-pany and organisational data during your studies, which will allow you to build re-lationships with companies that can serve you well upon completion of your educa-tion. Your Master’s Degree in Business Intelligence will qualify you for successful employment at all levels: local, national and international.

How does SAP utilise BI to be successful?Today, BI is not only the “little extra” or the “something nice to have”. Now it is part of our daily business and we use it internally in all departments – from Finances to Sales, on our prem-ises as well as on mobile devices. It is an absolute must if we are to set, achieve and follow up on our own goals. We are constantly embracing our own innovations.

Do you see a need for an education in BI?With the growing amount of informa-tion, data is more important than ever. It is so valuable that some companies regard it as their golden asset and it therefore needs to be handled in a proper way. Already you can fi nd a large demand for BI experts in various fi elds, and just as the amount of infor-mation is increasing, so is the need. This is why it is so vital for education in this fi eld.

How did you fi nd out about Business Intelligence at DU?I came as part of an exchange pro-gramme with my Chinese university. BI has a promising future, so I chose to study here.

What is best about the BI programme? That it is cross-disciplinary. We learn about Statistics, Computer Science and Economics, so we get a good understand-ing of every aspect of BI.

Would you recommend this programme?Yes, defi nitely to my friends – and espe-cially students with a Computer Science or Statistics background.

What do you enjoy about Dalarna? The programme itself and the good men-tor I had through NLE, the university’s stu-dent business unit. I also liked the Peace and Love festival.

Describe studying in Sweden?I would describe my experience at DU as en-lightening. I never thought that studying in the middle of Sweden would lead me to meet and work with so many interesting people from all over the world. e Swedish education system lets you take your own rhythm and decide on many aspects of your learning (I wrote my thesis about poverty in Peru), which is great.

The specifi c objective of the programme is for you to acquire tools for economic analysis that you can apply to public and private policy-making. You will de-velop advanced skills with a sound know-ledge of economic theory, in particular micro economic theory and quantitative methods that will enable you to under-stand and analyse economic problems. These skills are essential for a practising economist in many applied fi elds. Upon

completing the programme, you will be prepared for staff and management posi-tions that require the integration of micro-economic analysis and advanced quanti-tative methods in the public and private sectors. A solid training in research is emphasised through thesis work. In the thesis, you shall demonstrate and prac-tise your ability to integrate economic theory and methods in the context of the research question.

What inspired you during your studies?I believe that higher studies should take learning to the next level, from lecture-based learning to learning from great researchers. is is exactly the kind of supervision I re-ceived from my supervisor, Gunnar Isacsson. He is a man of great knowledge, with bril-liant skills with whom I loved learning.

Who should study Economics at DU?I would recommend this programme for peo-ple who have a vision about what they want to achieve. I think that this programme is meant for students who have the determina-tion to get the work done and move forward.

How was life as a student?I lived in Dalarna for almost three years, sharing my life with people who quickly became precious friends. On top of that, I loved the fact that I could take a dip in a lake or do a couple of cross-country ski laps after class.

Where do you see yourself in fi ve years? After I fi nish my current studies, I hope to pursue a career in the fi eld of development economics, half-way between academia and my passion for fi eld work. With such a broad horizon, it is very hard to say “where” I will be (sorry Mom!).

How did your studying Economics at DU help you get your current job?My job is related to my edu cation, which is the most important reason I like it. I feel really satisfi ed when I can use my experience from the classroom in my job. There’s always something new to learn at work, but this pro gramme gave me the know-ledge I needed to be able to begin my career.
