Message from the Chapter President

ODD, FREDERICA CHASE (1893–1972). Frederica Chase Dodd,

renowned Dallas teacher and social worker, was born on

November 3, 1893, to Frederic and Fannie Chase in Dallas,

Texas. Frederic Chase was a successful attorney in Dallas, and

Fannie was a teacher. Frederica graduated from Dallas Colored School

No. 2 (later called Booker T. Washington High School) in 1910 and be-

gan her collegiate studies at Howard University in Washington, D.C.

While at Howard, she helped establish Delta Sigma Theta in 1913, along

with twenty-one other women, and served as the sorority’s first

sergeant-at-arms. She graduated from Howard University in 1914 and

returned to Dallas to teach English at the future Booker T. Washington High

School.

The paragraph above is comprised of excerpts from the bibliography by Julia K.

Gibson Jordan and Charlie Mae Brown Smith, Beauty and the Best: Frederica Chase Dodd, The Story of a

Life of Love and Dedication (Dallas: Dallas Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, 1985). If you

have not read this remarkable story let me be the first to recommend it to you. When conversing with Soror

Jordan in regards to Soror Dodd she says everyone fondly called her Freddie short for Frederica. The thought

of this makes me smile. It paints a picture of an unassuming woman who carried no airs and radiated with

humility. She was about making Dallas a better place for women like us. She set a path for us to follow and it

humbles me to know that I am a part of an organization that celebrates her legacy.

November is Soror Dodd’s birthday month. Let us celebrate Freddie by honoring the legacy she left behind.

She was not one who would requests diamonds, gold, or platinum. Her birthday wish would not be for a new

Lexus or Mercedes SUV. I don’t see her planning a multi-dollar party decorated by Dallas’ best requiring an

attire of formal gowns and tuxedos. I think she would drive forward our chapter’s community service to the

Dallas metroplex and continue to make a difference. She would support PPAD’s Impact 90 as they coura-

geously implement 90 service projects in celebration of Dallas Alumnae’s 90 years of existence. She would

smile and proudly recognize the efforts of Delta G.E.M.S., TASpers, and Delta Academy as they touch the

lives of beautiful young ladies who have the option of being so many places but choose to be mentored and

guided by Deltas. She would be proud of the past presidents our chapter has elected and who worked tirelessly

to carry on that enormous and heavy torch she passed. Let’s celebrate Freddie by continuing the work she

started and proudly representing a legacy she left as a gift to us. Happy Birthday, Freddie! Now let’s get busy,

Dallas Alumnae.

Membership Services

When you think of the Membership Services Committee, please remember “it’s all about

you.” We exist to serve you, with sisterly devotion, and we hope you will not forget this.

Our services include our comfort and care outreach for the sick, shut-in and bereaved. We

want to support you as you face the most challenging events in life and commemorate your

professional or personal accomplishments.

We announced the reclamation program at the September meeting. We want you to seek out

90 inactive Sorors, and invite them to “Reflect, Renew and Return” to Delta Sigma Theta Inc.

by affiliating with this chapter. Our accomplishments during these 90 years are unparalleled,

and our reputation should attract many inactive Sorors. Please extend an opportunity to serve our

community through membership in Dallas Alumnae Chapter to each and every inactive

Soror you meet.

Reclaiming Sorors can also be rewarding. The chapter member who accumulates the highest

total number of points through reclamation and program activities will be deemed the “Chapter

Member of the Year”, and awarded $250 for chapter dues (2014-2015). Each participant will

receive 100 points for each reclaimed Soror referred by the chapter member. You will receive 50

points for each visiting Soror you bring to a chapter meeting. 25 points will be awarded for each

Five Point Program event and/or community service program attended by a chapter member. If a

chapter member brings a visiting Soror to a Five Point Program, 10 points will be awarded.

Please take the time to send a friendship card or note to a shut-in Soror, particularly if your

birthday occurs in October. The committee is aware of the following Sorors who are homebound:

Maxine Thornton Reese, Tommie Nell Canaday, DeArtis Stinson, Mary Louise Williams, Bobbie

Lander and Marilyn Mask.

Sharing good times with Sorors is the greatest joy. This is the stuff that makes life worthwhile.

Franchising is a method of doing business. When you hear the word “franchise” you probably think

of fast food restaurants like McDonald’s Burger King and Wendy’s.

But there are many more types of franchise businesses. One out of every seven dollars is spent by

Americans for goods and services spent in a franchise business? Homes are bought and sold through

franchise real estate companies. These same homes can be cleaned, painted and carpeted through a

franchise business. Cars can be purchased, tuned and washed through franchises. We can travel

from one area of the world to another through franchise businesses.

Those were just a few of the hot topics discussed at “Franchising for Women and Diverse Commu-

nities” franchising seminar on Saturday, November 2nd. Attendees received a wealth of knowledge

from Soror Miriam Brewer and the International Franchise Association. Soror Brewer helped. Her

presentation

covered franchise financing, different franchising models, legal aspects of franchising and the pros

and cons of purchasing a franchise in today’s economic climate. Attendees walked away with a new

understanding of the franchising market. Thanks to Sorors Sylvia Hamilton, Racquel Washington,

Rosalyn Walker and Rita Davis for volunteering at the Seminar.

Below are photos of Delta volunteers from Dallas Alumnae with Soror Miriam Brewer.

PPAD News Thank You Sorors,

It was with our collective efforts Dallas Alumnae made an IMPACT at three

DISD schools. We had a very successful 2013 School Supply Drive. We

donated over 1000+ school supplies to students at WW Bushman

Elementary, Martin Luther King Learning Center and John Leslie Patton, Jr.

Academic Center.

PPAD will continue to collect school supplies to help us get a jump start on

next year. Sorors, if you are in the stores and see a great deal on school

supplies make the purchase and make a student happy. The School supply

box will be at the FC Dodd center for the remainder of the sorority year.

Thank you for your donations and a special thank you to Sorors Doris Zanders, Vanessa Gray, Sharon Royal Hunt,

Frankie Hedrick, Sandra Stephens, Oretta Johnson, Rachel Glee and Joyce Jackson who assisted with delivery to the

schools. The PPAD Committee would like to also thank Mr. Donnie Zanders for being volunteering his time and great

photography skills.

Physical & Mental Health Physical activities during the holidays By Soror Rita Davis

Chair

The holiday season can be a very busy time, but it

is important to stay moving as you celebrate the

season.

Physical activity is very important. Shopping is a

great way to get in physical activity. Park a dis-

tance from the mall entrance. Do not go to the

mall hungry. Once in the mall walk the mall be-

fore shopping and after shopping.

While at work make an effort to be more physically active. March in place while talking on the

phone. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Walk or jog while watching television, do push-

ups and sit-ups during commercials.

Calorie-burning Activities for Family Gatherings

While the turkey is still in the oven or after it's been sliced and eaten, family members can enjoy

several tried-and-true fun activity games that will burn calories, increase metabolism and are

great family fun!

-Play Twister - Those twisted, gnarled bodies are burning 170 calories per hour, stretching mus-

cles.

-Hula Hoop - A thirty minute hula with this hoop around one's waist burns 200 calories!

-Ping Pong - A holiday ping-pong tournament will help family members burn 270 calories for

each hour they hit that little white ball around the table!

-Wii - Hook up a Wii in a room where the family can take turns playing one of the games in Wii

sports. 1-4 players at a time can play tennis, bowling, or golf.

-DDR (Dance, Dance Revolution) - Over 380 calories burned for one hour of dancing!

-Play Softball or Shoot Hoops - Get to the park and tap into your inner-child with a friendly

challenge! (Your kids will go easy on you.) You'll burn approximately 400 calories for an hour

of play (and probably spend two days recovering!)

Parliamentary Gems

It was evident in the proceedings of our last chapter meeting that sorors read the

Parliamentary column in the last issue. As your parliamentarian, it is my plan to in-

clude something in each issue of the chapter newsletter that will keep us abreast of

some of our most used and common parliamentary procedures.

The following Parliamentary ‘gems’ are offered to assist in appropriate proce-

dures during our meetings:

Minutes of a previous meeting may be corrected by:

1. Rectifying something that is already included

2. Adding an action (motion or decision) that has been omitted

3. Clarification of wording so that the intent is clear/clearer

4. Deletion of errors and/or incorrect information

Individual sorors and or committees who want to make changes to the chapter

Rules of Order / Policies and Procedures Manual may do so by submitting the

proposed change to the Policies and Procedures Committee.

Reminders from last issue:

During meetings, the Dallas Alumnae Chapter President is addressed as:

Madam President.

When a soror is recognized by the President, the soror asking a for clarification or

a question, speaks to the President and not to the person making the report.

Right hand over the heart when saying the Delta Oath, but not the Secret Motto.

Look forward to the next issue and your Parliamentary ‘gems’.

In 2011, our new Regional Rep, Tiffany Kidd, urged the SWR to

join her in supporting St. Jude by recruiting teams for the St. Jude

Give Thanks. Walk (held the weekend before Thanksgiving).

The SWR dedicated our efforts in memory of one of our ex-

tended family, when we learned the special place that St. Jude

holds in the heart of our very own SWR Secretary, Shelia M.

Geater. Her sister (Carlette Anita Geater), who died when

Soror Geater was four, was treated there.

Since then, St. Jude has been included in Project 13, and all regions

and chapters were asked to support this worthy cause.

Once again, Soror Kidd and I are asking the Southwest Region to step up and step out in support of St.

Jude.

This year's St. Jude Walk will be held on Saturday, November 23rd in nine cities (like the Jewels!!!) in the SWR:

NORTHWEST ARKANSAS - Springdale, AR

LOUISIANA - Baton Rouge, Bossier City & Lafayette

New Mexico - ABQ

TEXAS - Austin (Pflugerville), Fort Worth, Frisco & Houston

THANKS IN ADVANCE TO ALL THE CHAPTERS & MEMBERS THAT HAVE ALREADY

REGISTERED OR DONATED. Because of our support through the Project 13 Partnership, St. Jude, families

never receive a bill for treatment, travel, housing or food --because all a family should worry about is helping their

child live.

Don’t worry, if you haven’t registered, it’s not too late. Log in today at

fundraising.stjude.org/deltasigmatheta to start or join a team. Together we can continue the fight against childhood

cancer and sickle cell disease!

All registered participants who receive 10 online donations between November 1 and November 22nd will be

entered into a drawing to win a trip for two to New York City, two tickets to a live taping of LIVE! with Kelly

and Michael, and a photo opportunity with co-host and St. Jude supporter, Michael Strahan.

Attached is the St. Jude toolkit, 2013 SWR locations, and information about registration. Remember, you can

support virtually if you are not in a walk site.

Thanks and have a great Veterans Day weekend.
