Program Development 1998-2000 Spent 1998-2000 with Dr. Julie Lengfelder and Dr. David Groves researching and designing the new tourism studies major. This included examinations of existing tourism programs throughout the world, a thorough evaluation of educational needs in a tourism program, and developing course content and requirements. 1998 Helped establish linkage between Bowling Green State University and Bilkent

University in Turkey for student exchanges between the two universities for tourism studies programs. Course development, comparative tourism program information research, and logistics of exchanges were all involved.

This involved regular contact with student organization officers, assistance in planning events, assistance in the association’s financial matters, and participating in student activities. 1997-2000 HMSLS Representative to the Study Abroad Program Board of Directors, BGSU. This involved monthly meetings to discuss issues such as how better to promote international education among BGSU students and how we might attract more international students to BGSU, student safety abroad, and cooperative arrangements with other institutions. College 2004-present Member of the College of Public Programs DIGS Grant Committee. Responsibilities

include evaluating all grant applications from the College faculty, ranking them, and making recommendations to the Dean.

1999-2000 Chair, College of Education International Education Committee, BGSU. Chaired this committee, which met each month to discuss issues pertinent to international education in the College of Education. CAPC serves in a policy-forming and advising capacity in matters concerning proposed additions and deletions of academic programs and on academic policies affecting more than one college. It reviews and makes recommendations concerning proposed curriculum changes, the University General Studies Program, and honorary degree policies and criteria. 2004-present Member of the Main Campus Curriculum Subcommittee. This is an advisory committee to the executive vice president and provost and the Curriculum and Academic Programs Committee regarding new course proposals. 2002-2004 ASU Academic Senator Representative on the ASU Clean and Beautiful Committee. This involves monthly meetings to plan and develop activities and promotional efforts for the Clean and Beautiful Program. It also entails spending time staffing booths on cleanup days. 1999-2000 Member of the Canadian Studies Advisory Committee, BGSU. This primarily involved monthly meetings to curriculum issues in the Canadian Studies Department. 1999-2000 Member of the Environmental Education Advisory Board, BGSU. This entailed monthly meetings to discuss issues related to campus conservation problems, curriculum development campus wide and in the Department of Environmental Studies, and environment-based field excursions for students. 1999-2000 Member of the university-wide International Education Committee, BGSU. This

required attending meetings once a semester to evaluate the nature of BGSU’s international education requirements and to decide on how best to promote international education across campus.

Professional 2005-present Secretary, International Geographical Union, Tourism Commission. I am the

secretary of this international organization that promotes the geographical study of sustainable tourism throughout the world. 2004-present Editor in Chief, Journal of Heritage Tourism. I am the editor of a new international journal devoted to the study of heritage tourism—one of the largest and fastest growing segments of the tourism industry. Responsibilities involve(d) negotiations with a major tourism publisher (Channel View Publications, UK) to initiate the new journal, selecting a diverse editorial board with widespread expertise in various areas of heritage tourism, assisting the publisher in disseminating promotional material, setting the timetable and publication schedule, and encouraging potential authors to contribute material for the first volume (2006). This will involve regular editorial responsibilities, including coordinating double blind reviews of manuscripts, soliciting high-quality manuscripts for review, representing the journal and publisher at conferences, and maintaining high standards of scholarly excellence. 2003-present Advisor, National Geographic Society, Sustainable Tourism Initiative. This job requires extensive contact with publishers to acquire books for review, constant communication with scholars throughout the world to solicit critical book reviews for publication, and editing final reviews once they are submitted in preparation for publication. 2001-2003 National Chair, Recreation, Tourism and Sport Specialty Group, Association of American Geographers.
