Good Season SeenFor Grain Elevator

"File Houston Public Grain Elevatorby the end of September had shippedmore than 49 million bushels of grain.and in only eight years over the lastquarter-century has the elevator han-dled more than that amount in the entireyear.

"Despite a reeent slackening in grainshipments, 1962 will still go down asa very good year at the grain elevator,"said Elevator Manager Thurinan H.Sherwood.

Last year was tlie record-setter forthe grain elevator with nearly 75 mil-lion bushels handled, topping the previ-ous high of 1959 of 69 million bushels.Through September of last year the ele-vator handled 58 million bushels and

in 1959 had mowed 61 million bushelsover the same period.

Third brat year has been 1960 at 60million bushels and that year the move-ment through the first three quarterswas just over 50 million bushels about

what Houston had at month’s end thisyear.

"We may very well top the total 1960mark in 1962, as October through De-cember are traditionally heavy months,"Sherwood said.

CAPTAIN HASHAGEN

German CaptainTakes ’Holiday’

Hermann Hashagen, Captain of theNorth German-Lloyd vessel BRANDEN-STEIN, probably hasn’t gone rowing inCentral Park, but the last time his shipwas in Houston, he and four of his crewtook a cruise down the ship channelaboard the inspection vessel SAMHOUSTON.

As the SAM HOUSTON passed theBRANDENSTEIN, tied up at wharf 12,Captain Hashagen rushed out on thediminutive bridge and waved at theGerman crew members lining tile railsof his ship. At first the crew appearednot to notice him so he waved harder, then smiled as everybody on the railwaved back.

At the wheel of the SAM HOUSTONthe Captain showed the results of morethan twenty years spent at sea by steer-ing a perfect course.

The BRANDENSTEIN had broughta cargo of English automobiles to Hous-ton and was loading a general cargo forthe return trip by way of CorpusChristi, Beaumont and Brownsville.
