A large number of interlocking internal cladding panels with a highly reflective paint finish to the steel had become damaged during the build process and, as they could not be demounted individually, required to be repaired in-situ.

The 2mm thick Eurobond had suffered chips, dents, scratches and even puncture holes, disfiguring mainly the lower areas to panels which were up to 12 metres tall. quantity of individual repairs, coupled with health and safety issues surrounding working with paint and other finishing products in confined areas, as well as a looming deadline all increased the need for effective action.

The SolutionFollowing a well established procedure for dealing with damaged cladding panels, the individual areas in the profiles were filled and reshaped using Plastic Surgeon’s two-part fillers and then sanded back using a graduation of abrasives to achieve a smooth surface.

After completing an initial demonstration for Laing O’Rourke, Plastic Surgeon sourced specially formulated low solvent, odour free paint for the project and applied it using low pressure, high volume spraying equipment purchased specifically to help meet the onerous health and safety requirements.

Up to a dozen Fine Finishers from across the Plastic Surgeon’s regions worked under the supervision of a dedicated site manager, to restore the cladding panels with their pale blue-grey coating to a high standard of finish. As well as the levels of manpower involved, the Fine Finishers also worked on into the night on a number of occasions to help bring the programme back on schedule.

The ResultThanks to Plastic Surgeon’s full on response to the situation – both in terms of physical resources and the technical abilities demonstrated – Laing O’Rourke was able to remedy the damage in a cost effective manner and achieve its handover targets. The Fine Finishers succeeded where a specialist coatings contractor had been unable to achieve a solution, and Plastic Surgeon has thereby added new capabilities to its armoury.

Sustainable RepairsAt the same time as providing clients with a comprehensive cosmetic repair service addressing virtually every type of product and substrate, Plastic Surgeon is also addressing important aspects of the sustainability agenda. For while the company’s ethos of ‘repairing rather than replacing’ represents a saving of approximately £3 for every pound spent, this approach also significantly reduces waste going to landfill and therefore helps cut a customer’s carbon footprint. Uniquely, Plastic Surgeon has developed its VisibilITy software which translates each finisher’s job report, sent from their palm pilot, into the equivalent weight and other statistics on a data base that participating customers can utilise for their own sustainability reporting.
