Dan Deery Toyota/Scion unveils new state-of-the-art buildingBy ANGELA HOLMES

CEDAR FALLS — Although Deery dealerships have been a mainstay at the corner of Uni-versity Avenue and Main Street since 1979, Dan Deery Toyo-

ta/Scion is turning heads with a sleek, new state-of-the art building.

“The former building had been remodeled and kept up, but we were due for a new building,” Dan Deery, president of Dan Deery Motors, said about the

former showroom, which was about 60 years old.

The showroom, service department and car wash have been combined into one build-ing. All departments — cus-tomer service, sales, fi nancing, car wash, parts and service —

are accessible in the one-stop building.

“The biggest thing is every-thing fl ows freely and it is a more customer-friendly build-ing,” Deery said.

The exterior design is even more recognizable with its two-

story structure and bright red Toyota logo. A variety of 2013 models are displayed in front of the building, where new, spa-cious customer parking spots are available.

Spacious showroom customer-friendly, accessible

CEDAR FALLS — The most strik-ing feature of the new showroom at Dan Deery Toyota/Scion at the corner of University Avenue and Main Streets is the fl oor-to-ceil-ing windows that wrap around the building.

“It is much more open,” said Dan Deery, president of Dan Deery Motors. “There is light in here all of the time.”

The showroom opened Oct. 15, after a fi ve-month demolition/construction project. It is now combined with the new service department, a project that began in July 2011.

“The biggest thing is everything fl ows freely and it is a more cus-tomer-friendly building,” Deery said.

Customers are greeted by a service counter as they walk into the main entrance. They then are directed to the fi nance or service department or to sales associates, who are openly stationed along the perimeter of the showroom.

Whether a customer is waiting for their vehicle to be serviced or buying a new or used vehicle, several lounge areas are located in the showroom, off ering a variety of amenities.

One area quietly nestled in the back of the building has sever-

al couches and a table to relax. Tables and chairs are dotted throughout the showroom for customers to look over brochures or just sit and relax.

The lounge area near the ser-vice department has a television, magazines, kids play area, free Wi-Fi and a coff ee bar with com-plimentary fruit and doughnuts. A soda machine and popcorn

machine are also located near the service desk.

Deery’s offi ce is right in the middle of the showroom, making him easily accessible to employ-ees and customers.

“I keep my fi nger on every-thing,” he said.

A variety of Toyota and Scion vehicles are on display through-out the showroom, includ-

ing Sienna and Tacoma trucks, a Venza crossover SUV and the popular Corolla and Camry cars. Other popular Toyota vehicles include the 4Runner SUV, Avalon and the RAV4 SUV.

Dan Deery Toyota/Scion partic-ipates in Toyota’s Certifi ed Used Vehicles program, which includes

a 12-month or 12,000-mile com-prehensive warranty, seven-year or 100,000-mile limited power train warranty, one-year roadside assistance, 160-point quality assurance inspection and CAR-FAX vehicle history report.

Behind the showroom, separate entryways into the service area, including two new quick lube stalls, serve customers’ needs quickly and easily.

The project began in July 2011 with the demolition of the service department, car wash and a bar-ber shop, which stood between the dealership and McDonald’s on Main Street.

The service area and car wash were built fi rst behind the existing showroom.

“We left the showroom up so they could operate the dealership out of it,” said Brad Best, execu-tive vice president of Peters Con-struction, Waterloo, who served as project manager of the Deery renovation.

In May, the showroom was vacated for demolition and reconstruction.

“We had fi ve months to build it,” Best said. “It was pretty aggres-sive because it was disruptive to their business with dust and noise right alongside them selling cars.”

The subcontractors put in six-day weeks during the heat of the summer to complete the project by Oct. 15, Best said.

Toyota Image USA II specifi ca-

tions were followed for the build-ing’s design, which features tall ceilings and exterior glass, allow-ing as much natural light into the building as possible.

The building is LEED-certi-fi ed, following a green building certifi cation program using a national rating system for build-ings designed, constructed and operated for improved envi-ronmental and human health performance.

LEED addresses all building types and emphasizes state-of-the-art strategies in fi ve areas: sustainable site development, water savings, energy effi ciency, materials and resources selec-tion and indoor environmental quality.

The former buildings were ineffi cient, said Dan Channer, of Struxture Architects, Waterloo, who served as principal architect of the Deery project.

“The new design has more insu-lation and high-effi ciency light-ing,” he said.

The lighting was also reconfi g-ured on the lot, and paving was replaced south to University Ave-nue, Best said.

As well as its close proximity to the University of Northern Iowa campus, Dan Deery Toyota/Sci-on’s location is easily accessible to several highways, attracting steady customers from Waverly,

New Hampton, Independence, Oelwein, Hudson, Dike, Jesup, Charles City and Reinbeck.

“Our out-of-town customers know exactly how to get here,” Deery said.

With a new state-of-the-art facility at “the best location in the area,” Deery plans to contin-ue serving customers for years to come.

“This location is like home,” Deery said.

Deery’s finance department off ers options for customers with all credit needs. Toyota discounts and incentives are available for a variety of models, including the 2013 Corolla, Highlander, Camry and Sienna.

Scion, a division of Toyota, off ers a series of vehicles with a variety of accessories, such as Pioneer stan-dard or Bespoke premium audio systems, Sirius or Pandora radio and navigation systems. Scion off ers Pure Price, a sales process that fi rmly sticks to the advertised price without haggling.

DAN DEERY TOYOTA/SCION

Family business: Deery history runs deep in area BY ANGELA HOLMES

For the Courier

CEDAR FALLS — The vehicle business runs in the Deery family.

In 1909, John George Deery began selling Fords and tractors in Wisconsin.

His son, John Deery Sr., has more than 65 years in the car business, starting in Illinois when he was 19. In 1971, he moved his family to Cedar Falls, where they have been active community members.

In 1979, John Sr. opened Deery Pontiac at the corner of Univer-sity Avenue and Main Street, the location where the newly reno-vated Dan Deery Toyota/Scion building was recently completed.

Dan Deery joined his father in the business right out of high school in 1979. His son, D.J., joined Dan Deery Toyota/Scion full time in May after graduating from the University of Northern Iowa. Dan’s other sons, Dustin and Dylan, work at the dealership part time while attending UNI.

The 7404 University Ave. loca-tion — the hub of Dan Deery Motors — has gone through sev-eral changes in the past 33 years.

In 1981, they added Dodge, and in 1983, Dan took over the business as Dan Deery Pontiac-Dodge.

Nearly three years ago, Dan Deery Motor Co. moved its Dodge, Jeep, Chrysler and Ram inventory to 3900 Alexandra Drive in Waterloo. The Univer-sity Avenue location exclusively became a Toyota/Scion and used cars dealership.

The Deery name has a strong reputation in the business. About 85 percent of Dan Deery Motors’ business every month is from referrals and return customers.

“We take care of our customers and give back to the community,” Deery said. “We’ve been very for-tunate with the economy in this area.”

The staff also contributes to the dealership’s success.

“We don’t have much turnover here,” Deery said. “I believe in taking care of them, and they are loyal. Management staff has been

with me for a long time, and sales managers have been here at least 15 years.”

The Deery Brothers Automotive Group, which includes dealerships

owned by Dan and his brothers, Brad and John Jr., is Iowa’s largest auto retailer with access to more than 5,000 cars, trucks, vans and SUVs of all makes and models at

17 franchises in nine stores in Iowa City, Des Moines, Ames, Burling-ton, Pella, Maquoketa, Waterloo and Cedar Falls.

“That’s why I have good manag-ers,” Deery said. “I’m gone a lot.”

John Sr. still has his hand in the business, visiting the dealership nearly every day, Dan said.

The Deery family plays an active role in the metro community.

Dan’s wife, Julie, volunteers every week at St. Patrick’s School, North Cedar School and Cove-nant Medical Center.

“I grew up here,” Deery said. “I love the community. I wouldn’t be anywhere else.”

CEDAR FALLS — Along with a new showroom, the Dan Deery Toyota/Scion service depart-ment has gone through a com-plete overhaul.

The revamped area, which includes maintenance, recondi-tioning and detail shops as well as a car wash, has added two quick-lube lanes.

No appointment is needed for the quick lube, which includes a car wash. Hours have also been extended to Saturday.

“People want to come in and get out,” said Dan Deery, presi-dent of Dan Deery Motors. “They don’t want to spend their lunch hour or day off waiting for an oil change.”

The service department has a separate entrance from the out-side, as well as a reception desk in the back of the showroom.

While it specializes in Toy-otas, the service department is equipped to work on all makes and models.

Dan Deery Toyota’s factory-trained and certifi ed technicians have passed the rigorous Toyota Certifi cation Program. Many of Deery’s technicians are also cer-

tifi ed by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence.

Toyota Care, a complimentary maintenance plan, is included with the purchase or lease of every new Toyota, covering the vehicle for two years or 25,000 miles, whichever comes fi rst.

Toyota Care Scheduled Factory Maintenance covers oil and fi l-ter, tire rotation and multi-point inspection. The plan’s 24-hour roadside assistance covers lock-out protection, fl at tire changes, jump starts, fl uid delivery and towing.

Dan Deery Toyota’s tire center stocks more than 300 tires with more available to order. The parts department specializes in Toyota factory-certifi ed parts, as well as Toyota accessories.

Other features of the service department include:

Competitive “up front” pricing.■

Complimentary multipoint service check on all vehicles serviced.
