of magical methods, combined with his theatrical

I want to touch base with you all as we start the new year. My vi-sion for the Ring is to attract some new members and encourage past ones to attend the meetings. We present a varied program throughout the year, and at $30.00 a year for membership (dues payable this month!) it is quite a bargain. There is no charge for lectures and instruc-tion classes are presented at 6:00 PM. Here is wishing you and your families a great 2013. I hope to see you all at the meetings and any-where else we may meet.

December, our last meeting of the year, came off with a boom and a bang and a thunderous shazam that transformed members’ performance night into a Gala. But before getting to that, it was election night. Michael Kent assumed the new vice presi-dent’s post. The rest of the incumbents stayed in office. Jonti distributed our new tri-fold for advertising Ring 81 and the treasurer reminded us that the dues were now $30.00 a year. Considering this, it was John Ames good fortune to win the 50/50 raf-fle. On a more serious note, two of our members were formally recognized by the Board for their many contributions to the Chapter. Each of them, Joe Floersheimer and David Pitchford, were given written and framed acknowledgments of their service to the applause of members standing in respect. Finally, Nick Benetento was present-ed as our guest for the evening.

John Tietjen known to the world of magic as Jonti, served as our master of cer-emonies. Gale Molovinsky began the entertainment with a magical washing machine. You put in white sox and red sox come out. Some things get shrunk, others things get bigger. With the help of Miss Montana, he demonstrated how objects mysteriously change place in three cylinders. Next, David Pitchford amused and confused us with what he calls “emulsion.” Three black cards are stacked on top of three red cards. The stack is jiggled and turned over and now there are red, black, red, black, etc. When he turns the stack face down again and waits a minute, the cards cluster in red and black again. He explains that in any emulsion, the two elements mixed settle out and separate. Okay, if you say so, David. Joe Floersheimer showed us a variation he calls “Visine gets the red out.” Cards that are alternately red and black suddenly be-came all red and all black. Of course, Visine can get the red out.

Jose Reyes gave us a change of pace. He invited two strong men to tie his hands and legs and make the ties tight. The rope was then covered with a silk cloth. He claimed he could not get out, but his hand came from under the silk to scratch his nose and then returned under the silk. When the silk was removed, he was still tied up. His wife was with him during the performance, Does that have anything to do with it? James Canady showed us some amazing self-working card tricks. He was fol-lowed by Jim Casey with the magic of counting cards and predicting what shows up. I suspect these are not self-working tricks. Wes Meltzer did a classical Chinese coin trick. The coins have holes in them and Wes explains the reason for it. One can carry many coins on a string. The problem is if you want a particular coin you have to take off others so you can get to it. Not for Wes. He just pulls off coins and puts them back without untying the string that holds them. The piece de resistance was Michael Kent’s stage performance.

He was dressed in tails and strutted with a gentleman’s cane. Suddenly, the cane became a silk from which he uncovered a white dove. Does one’s heart good to see an act with doves – appearing from an empty box; doves sitting on a stand that you know will soon disappear; doves that suddenly take flight or coo when si-lence is required. What fun.

Windy and Sunny Douton were, as always, a great attraction. They were giv-en a prominent place in this months “Linking Rings.” The article and pictures were wonderful. No matter how often I see them perform they never fail to tickle and amaze me. This night he did several variations with paddles and even though he taught me how to use them, I am always fooled when he does it. He also did the voodoo doll routine, that as simple as it is, in the right hands can be very impres-sive. He ended with a card trick where the three of hearts becomes his business card. And the show was over except for the many camera flashes and requests for group shots. I hope some of these get into the next newsletter.
