This year my work as a dance educatorand presenter has brought me into con-tact with multiple dancers, teachers and

administrators from other communities in thestate and the country.

As I have moved through phone calls andemails, texts and chats with these newacquaintances and friends, looking for moreinspiration and ideas to support dance inSanta Cruz, I am reminded once again, justhow incredible this dance community is.

Our dance community continues toimpress me with the endless commitmentand joy that each and every one of ourdancers bring to the stage, the studio and thestreets. This is a mid-size city with a large-city commitment to dance.

I have always said that there is as muchopportunity to dance here as in most metro-politan areas. I believe this to be true and Ibelieve that it goes beyond availability of

classes during the week and a diversity ofgenres. I believe that dancers in our towncarry with them a belief that dance is not justfor "dancers", it is for everyone to experienceand I believe that it is this ideology that sobeautifully permeates this community andallows for such a thriving dance world.

When I make these calls to others com-munities across the country, I hear time andtime again, how “lucky” we are to live here inthis little city by the sea and I do feel “lucky”and grateful, blessed and celebratory. Yes,because I live in one of the most beautifulplaces in the world but mostly because I liveand work somewhere where each and everyday I am surrounded by people that inspireme. Inspire me to dance, inspire me to advo-cate for dance and create time and space fordance. It is with gratitude in my heart to eachand every one of you that I say, Enjoy and“Let’s Dance”!

Each year at the end of April,over 75 communities cele-brate National Dance Week,to “celebrate the benefitsandbeauty of dance and its abilityto enrich our lives, our bodies,our spirits and our culture.”At the cornerstone of SantaCruz Dance, National Dance

Week Santa Cruz is a pillarfor outreach in encouragingthe growth and developmentof Dance by raising the publicconsciousness to the values,importance and contributionsof Dance to our daily lives andculture.

One night ONLY each year in April hundreds of dancersand thousands of observers converge for a fantastic nightof dance on the streets of Downtown Santa Cruz.

The event will kick off at 5:30pm. Three stages of dancewill continue throughout the evening concluding with afinale presented by Samba Stilt Circus at 8:30pm
