Part 2 : Semantic Web

End of 1990 On-line August 6, 1991

http://info.cern.ch/hypertext/WWW/TheProject.html

Built the first web server/browser 1994 Founded W3C – since then Director 1999 3COM chair at MIT 2004 Awarded a knighthood by

Queen Elizabeth II

Tim and W3C has been driving the Semantic Web standards since they published an

article in Scientific American, May 2001:

1. You search the web for photos on a ”orange ape”

2. An image collection of animal photographscontains snapshots of orangutans

3. The search engine finds the photos, despite the fact that the words “orange” and “ape” do not appear in annotations

We need some infrastructure to do this…

RDF - Resource Description Framework

OWL - Web Ontology Language

RDF triples are often conceptualized graphically as shownbelow:

Can be represented using XML serialisation, e.g.:<Secret Agent,isNamed,Niki Devgood >

After creating this triple, we can go on to create othertriples to associate the agent with an email address, image, etc.

RDF has an XML syntax that has a specific meaning: Every Description element describes a resource

<hasColleague resource="some.uri/person/daniel"/>

<hasHomePage>http://www.microsoft.se/arkitekt</hasHomePage>

RDF gives a formalism for meta data annotation, and a way to write it

down in XML, but it does not give any special meaning to vocabulary such

as subClassOf or type

I.e., <Person, subClassOf,Animal> has no special meaning

RDF Schema defines “schema vocabulary” that supports definition of

ontologies

gives “extra meaning” to particular RDF resources (such as subClassOf)

this “extra meaning”, or semantics, specifies how a term should be

interpreted
