We’ve journeyed with Jesus to and through his baptism, temptation, transfiguration, last supper and events of His last week – Holy Week. We do all of this in preparation for, and anticipation of Easter. I was reading the resurrection narrative from Matthew 28 recently when a phrase jumped up at me. It is in verse 7, spoken by one of the angels to the women who have discovered the empty tomb: “Do not be afraid,” the angel says in reassurance, inviting their examination of the tomb. Then these words: “He has been raised from the dead and He is going ahead of you into Galilee.” He is going ahead of you. As I sat with that line I began to ponder its truth and promise for us. Jesus, the risen Christ, is always going ahead of us. We’ve seen this in our Lenten worship focus. Jesus goes ahead of us through baptism, into wilderness temptation, to the transfiguration’s foretaste, the last supper’s commemorative significance, the garden’s anguish, and the cross’ cruelty. He goes ahead of us in both life and death - that we might follow, that we might live. Jesus is always going ahead of us in the day to day. He is preparing the way, giving us strength, and offering hope. He goes ahead through times of transition, in seasons of illness, situations of challenge – in both the unexpected and the unknown. He goes ahead of us individually and collectively. As we at First Baptist Church ponder a future, Jesus goes ahead of us, preparing us for that future. As a family faces change and challenge, Jesus goes ahead - guiding, sharing, offering compassion and strength. He spent three years with twelve disciples and He was always ahead of them. Even after His death, in the victory of the resurrection, He went ahead – calling them forward into a new adventure. Where do these words find you this Easter? What’s going on in your life? What are you being called to do or be? Consider the strong promise that Jesus is already there. As we make final preparation to follow Jesus in these days of Easter’s hallelujahs and the resurrection’s joy, we find both hope and comfort, possibility and challenge, in this phrase. Jesus has gone ahead – and He is calling us to follow, to come, to join Him in that which is next. Wishing you the joy and hope of Easter’s Good News! Christ is Risen . . . and He goes ahead. When we sit with Scripture, even the most familiar of the scriptures, and allow them to read us, it can be surprising what we see and hear. During the Lenten season we have been revisiting some of the major events of Jesus’ ministry as described for us in the Gospels. Revitalization Team News

First Baptist has entered into a time of study and reflection centered around congregational revitalization. In short we believe that now is the time to renew our investment in ministry health, growth and vitality as a congregation. We need congregational input, so if you haven’t done so already, please sign up for a Focus Group Meeting. All meetings will be held in the Chapel. The dates of the meetings are:

April 2—7:00 pm April 23—10:45 am May 3—2:00 pm April 6—7:00 pm April 23—7:00 pm May 4—7:00 pm April 9—10:45 am April 27—7:00 pm May 7—7:00 pm April 9 –7:00 pm April 30—7:00 pm May 9—7:00 pm April 20—7:00 pm

Choose one that best fits your schedule. We strongly encourage everyone to participate. Group meetings will be kept small in size (12-15 persons) so all can be heard and respond to the same questions.

The Revitalization Team consists of Jennifer Kelley, Deb Steele, Jeff Caldwell, Bob Rhude, Zach Bolte and Pastor Dan Cash. If you have questions about the revitalization initiative or your participation, please speak with one of the team members.

Grace Wins!

An Intergenerational Choir will be coming together to lead worship on

April 30 with a brand new musical titled “#GraceWins”. This

collection by Nan and Dennis Allen will speak to the theme of grace;

forgiveness from our Father, victory over sin through Jesus, and

assurance of our salvation. The title song says: “There’s a war

between guilt and grace, and they’re fighting for a sacred space. But

I’m living proof - grace wins every time.” The music along with skits,

readings and scripture will assure us that Grace Wins! Invite others to join us as we celebrate God’s Grace.

The Glad Ringers are headed to Central Square, New York for their annual Mission

Tour. Meg Biddle was called to pastor a church there and she along with other

churches and their leadership will be hosting us for 3 worship concerts the weekend

we’ll be there. Please plan now to attend our home sharing on Thursday, June 8 here

at First Baptist. This will be our last big mission trip as a handbell choir, but I’m sure

we will still be available for short adventures close by. Come and celebrate this

exciting ministry with us.

Healthy Living Tips

Prevent Colon Cancer

Colorectal cancer (cancer of the colon or rectum) affects both men and women, and is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States. Colorectal cancer can be prevented by getting screened for the disease beginning at age 50. Screening tests help prevent colorectal cancer by finding and removing precancerous polyps (abnormal growths). Screening also finds this cancer early, when treatment can be most effective.

Take these steps to help lower your risk for colon cancer.

• Talk to your doctor or nurse about colon cancer screening, especially if you are age 50 or older, you or

a close relative has had colon cancer or polyps, or if you have inflammatory bowel disease.

• Call 1-800-4-CANCER or 1-800-ACS-2345 to learn more about screening options in your community.

• Be physically active and maintain a healthy weight.

• Choose more fruits and vegetables for meals and snacks.

• Limit alcohol.

• Quit Smoking. Call 1-800-QUIT-NOW to help you quit.

Thank you for your support in so many ways during Kenny’s surgery and recovery. We really appreciate our church family and your caring ways.

Blessings, Donna and Kenny Tull

Thank you for opening your doors for our community health screening in your community. It is because of your generosity that Life Line Screening continues to be able to bring these health screenings into your area and for that, we are very appreciative.

We look forward to working together again! We appreciate all your help and support with hosting this community

outreach event.

Sincerely, Martinus Sanders, Life Line Screening

Dear First Baptist Church Family,

Each year you give very special blessings to those of us working in the school system...from your generous gifts to the many prayers lifted up for not just our students but for our employees. I wanted to say thank you for these many things that you have done...for me and my family. Truly we have been blessed to be a part of this church family. I am so thankful that I am part of a church that reaches out to community, in so many ways.

To those who spent their time and effort to shop and to put together these bags, a very special thank you. Your kindness and grace will not be forgotten. I pray that as we start this new school year that we (I) will be able to pass on the love of Jesus as you have done for us. May God bless you, His Church, and our community. Thank you again!

Cross Connections—Lenten Study

“Life Together”

We will be finishing the Lenten study on Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s book, “Life Together” on Wednesday, April 5.

You are invited to join the Pastoral Care and Health Ministry teams in the next Cross Connections offering:

Journeys With Dementia Wednesdays April 26, May 3, and May 10

The Pastoral Care Team and the Health Ministry Team are sponsoring a three-part educational opportunity in support of care givers for those suffering from dementia. Many of us are or will face this care challenge with family members or friends.

A fellowship meal will be served on these dates at 5:00 p.m. in Fellowship Hall. Please sign the friendship register or call the church office if you plan to attend the meal.

The following is an overview of the presentations:

April 26—6:00 p.m.: Gary Goshorn, a retired Columbus educator, will relate his journey with his wife, Carole, who experienced early onset Alzheimer’s Disease. Carole may be present with him. Gary will share a powerpoint presentation and tell how he and Carole have been supported.

May 3—6:00 p.m.: A panel of three persons will relate their experiences in providing care to spouses and will share how, as a church family, we can support them in this journey. Panelists are Pat Evans, Frank Eldridge, and Ginny Newsom. Pastor Dan Cash will facilitate the discussion.

May 10—5:45 p.m. (note time change): A documentary, Alive Inside, will be shown. This video demonstrates how music can reach persons with dementia in surprising and encouraging ways.

The Pastoral Care Team and Health Ministry Team encourage your participation. Please invite family and friends to attend with you.

If your name does not appear on the Birthday List and you

wish to be included, please call or email the church office.
