4.CATHRINE LEGARDH & SIGURDUR FLOSASONMorning in May
“There is edge, controlled madness and melody at the same time. ‘LAND & SKY’ is a highly recommendable album and good example of very rare, grand, Danish jazz in a well known jazz tone, that is not afraid of challenging the familiar or even taking it a step further.” – Jazznyt.
Cathrine Legardh and Icelandic Sigurdur Flosason created twenty songs during six months - crossing the Atlantic, in cyberspace, over the phone and even while held up by ash from an active volcano in Iceland. First lyrics (Legardh) then music (Flosason) – each word and line carefully nurtured by tone and harmony. Exactly one year after the beginning of the eruption in Eyjafjallajökull, the album “Land & Sky” was ready to be released.

5.KJÆRGAARD-STREET-CYRILLERow No. 18
Featuring the Danish pianist and rising talent, Søren Kjærgaard, iconic drummer Andrew Cyrille and renowned bassist Ben Street, this cross-generational trio has been hailed by international critics for their previous two releases. Highlighting the compositional voice of Søren Kjærgaard, the three musicians challenge the traditional trio format, and their efforts in breaking new musical grounds has brought them to the stages of festivals and venues in Denmark, Spain, Italy, Canada and the US. The third and present album “Femklang” is a work relying on its slow unravelling pulse to evoke a suspended, weightless sound world. When August Rosenbaum released his solo-debut album “Beholder” at the tender age of 22, it was clear that a star of Danish jazz was in the making. Original, conceptual and challenging, “Beholder” left the mind spinning and clearly demonstrated the extent of the young man’s talent. Now teaming up with childhood musical friends, Jesper Thorn and Rasmus Lund as the August Rosenbaum Trio, their ¿UVW/3WRJHWKHUUHYHDOVDPRUH

IKI is bubbling intuition and
exploding improvisation! IKI
is a philosophy, it’s being in
the present and creating mu-
sic on the spot, only by using
the human voice, exploring its
many facets and sounds. The
9 female musicians from Den-
mark, Finland, Norway and
Iceland evolve and transform
singing, and bring it into new
unchartered territories.
In 2011 the band released their
debut album “IKI” and received
a Danish Music Award for Best
Vocal Jazz Release of the Year.
Each of IKI’s concerts is a uni-
verse of its own. The band’s cu-
riosity and intuitive approach
to music already brought them
to numerous concert venues,
TV and radio in the Nordic
countries. They have worked
together with dancers, actors
and poets and made movie
soundtracks.

record of the year so far.” – Mark
Saleski, Jazz.com
Equilibrium is a fresh blend of
styles and genres (creative jazz,
chamber music, folk music,
live electronic voicescapes and
more). The group consists of
Danish guitarist Mikkel Ploug,
Equilibrium’s main composer,
Sissel Vera Pettersen, a
Norwegian vocalist (now based
in Copenhagen) and Joachim
Badenhorst; a Belgian who has
spent the last two years based
mostly in Brooklyn.
The song “Sires” is, according
to Mikkel “a very typical
improvisation for us, as one of
the things that always inspires
us is to see if we can blend our
sounds so much we can’t tell who
is doing what.” Sissel thinks of
it as “almost more of a little pop
tune.... I really like the wavy feel
of it”

Billie Holiday’s wonderful voice has made a deep
impression on many of us. Vocalist Kira Skov also
fell under Billie’s spell: “I’ve been listening to Billie Holiday since my early teens. What I’m really aiming at with my interpretations is to bring Billie’s spirit to life for a spell.”35-year old Kira Skov has toured in Denmark and
abroad with Kira And The Kindred Spirits and the
British trip-hop star Tricky. Few can project a rock
tune like Kira, but she felt a need to develop other
facets of her musical personality. A new and very
special sensibility must, as one reviewer ventured,
“lead her artistically to new places”. With this
release, it has led her straight into the arms of Billie
Holiday. This particular song is however Kira´s own
composition.

Østergaard Art Quartet is a collaboration between three countries and four unique musicians. Their debut album “Stories from the Village” (BoogiePost Recordings) is telling stories late at night between the light of burning candles, during hands in a friendly game of cards. Dissonant and brutal grooves are mixed with the most sincere, almost romantic harmonies. It is an intense meet-ing of love somewhere between the motorways of Europe and the Nordic tundra. The bandleader, Michala Østergaard-Nielsen, is a highly interesting musician with a unique voice on the Nordic
music scene today and is described as having an almost zen-like attitude towards drumming, improvisation and music.
